Zhao Qingyun picked up her bowl and chopsticks to eat. The weather was nice today, unusually without rain. People say that it rains a lot during the Qingming Festival, and there has indeed been a lot of rain lately.
The two courtyards are separated by a wall. If a tall person stands on tiptoe, they can see what's happening on the other side. Today, Xu Lai brought her food outside to eat. The living room was just painted today and hasn't dried yet.
For dinner, she stewed pork belly and made braised pork, added three eggs, chopped some meat into minced meat, and made Mapo Tofu with tofu. Finally, she had vegetables. She saw that the bean sprouts looked fresh today, so she bought some and stir-fried them for dinner.
Grandma kept putting food on her plate, and Xu Lai quickly covered the bowl and said, "Grandma, that's enough, that's enough. If you keep putting food on the bowl, it'll be piled high with food."
Grandma finally gave up, muttering, "You need to eat more. Look at you, how thin you've become. You haven't taken care of your health while you're out."
Xu Lai put down her chopsticks, pinched her face, and said, "Grandma, look at the flesh on my face. Don't worry, I know it myself."
Zhao Qingyun listened to the voice on the other end and smiled. Grandma Jiang, who was eating her meal, looked at him and said with a smile, "What are you laughing at? Xiao Lai is so filial, unlike you."
Zhao Qingyun's lips drooped, and she said, "Grandma, what did I do now? If it's because I don't have a boyfriend, I won't take the blame. The neighbor's granddaughter might not have one either."
Grandma Jiang slapped him on the head: "Can't you find it? You just don't want to look."
Grandma Jiang wasn't bragging, but her grandson was good in every way. He graduated from a prestigious university, was handsome, and had an excellent appearance. Back in City B, a lot of good girls of similar social standing were waiting to go on blind dates with him. But he used the excuse of accompanying this old woman to hide in Heng County.
Zhao Qingyun tidied up the dishes and went upstairs to change into casual clothes. He was dressed in a suit and tie every day at work, but at home he didn't need to have so many concerns.
He changed his clothes, and Grandma Jiang asked in surprise, "What are you doing? Changing clothes so late at night."
Zhao Qingyun put on his windbreaker and asked, "The weather's nice today, shall I take you for a walk?"
Grandma Jiang was naturally happy to agree. It had been raining a lot lately, and she felt like she was going to get moldy from staying at home for too long.
Just before them, Xu Lai locked the door and went for a walk with her grandparents. They chatted as they walked, and Xu Lai, who didn't often pay attention to agriculture, asked her grandfather many questions.
She pointed to the spot and said, "Is that one of ours?"
Grandpa looked up and said, "It's an empty lot. I haven't decided what to plant yet."
Xu Lai had always wanted to grow something herself, and upon hearing this, she said, "Then I'll grow something this year."
As soon as Zhao Qingyun stepped out, he saw the three generations of the family ahead. He slowed his pace, keeping a distance that was neither too close nor too far from them.
Grandma Jiang walked slowly, noticing the boy staring intently ahead, and asked meaningfully, "What is Xiao Yun looking at?"
Zhao Qingyun coughed, covering her mouth, "No, just looking around."
He glanced to the side, then looked back at the woman's back. Just as Grandma Xu had said, she was very thin, wearing a wool coat, and even from behind, one could tell she had an extraordinary air about her.
The more Zhao Qingyun looked, the more familiar the faces seemed. Before she knew it, Grandma Jiang had walked ahead and called out to the three of them, "Xiuying, are you here for a walk too?"
Grandma Xu turned around upon hearing this and said, "Oh, my dear sister, you're here too."
Xu Lai greeted, "Hello, Grandma Jiang!"
Grandma Jiang nodded and pointed behind her: "My grandson is taking me for a walk."
Seeing that the old lady had specifically asked him for a name, Zhao Qingyun strode up to her and greeted her, "Hello, Grandpa Xu and Grandma Xu."
Grandma Xu took Xu Lai's hand and said, "Let me introduce you. This is my granddaughter. This must be the first time you've met her."
Zhao Qingyun looked at Xu Lai, and this time he finally saw her face clearly. She had delicate features and fair skin. The two were very close, and he could tell that she was not wearing makeup. Her face was clean and clear, but her eyes were full of aggression.
Xu Lai extended her hand: "Hello!"
Zhao Qingyun gave her a light handshake, thinking that this wasn't their first meeting, but seeing that she didn't recognize him, he could only hold back his words.
As Zhao Qingyun sized her up, she was also observing him. The man in front of her was wearing a windbreaker and had deep-set eyes. Xu Lai guessed that he was about the same age as her.
The next second, Grandma Jiang took Grandma's hand and said, "Xiuying, my grandson is almost thirty years old and still doesn't have a girlfriend. His parents are worried about him."
Xu Lai couldn't help but laugh. She glanced at the man, whose expression didn't change. Zhao Qingyun was inwardly furious. The old lady was really something, saying he was single in front of so many people.
Grandma Xu comforted her, saying, "The children have their own destinies. There's no use in us being anxious. Xiao Lai is not young anymore, and she's still single."
Grandma Jiang had been waiting for this question, and she asked, "What do you think of my husband as a match for Xiao Lai?"
Grandma Xu paused for a moment, then smiled and said, "I have no objection. Let's see what the children think."
Zhao Qingyun felt that the old lady was getting more and more outrageous, so she quickly stopped her: "Grandma, we've been out for quite a while, it's time to go back."
Grandma Jiang knew exactly what he was thinking, and said with a smile, "Xiuying, I'll head back now. Come visit me sometime."
...
The next day, Xu Lai was cleaning the house when she found a large bag of mung beans. She dusted them off, opened it, and saw that they were still fresh.
She called out, "Grandma, are we planting mung beans this year?"
A voice came from the other end: "Keep some for seeds."
Xu Lai understood. She continued tidying up the house. There were many traces of rats in the room where the grain was stored. She suppressed her disgust and cleaned up the trash.
