Chapter 41 Falling into the Fishpond

Grandpa had dug up some fish bait during the day and put it in a small jar. Xu Lai opened it and glanced at it, and her scalp tingled instantly. The jar was full of earthworms, so she quickly ran away.

Grandpa left the net open, threw in the bait, tied it up, leaving a small opening so the fish would smell it, swim in, and then get stuck.

She also tried it out herself, immersing the cage in the pond, making sure to bury it deep enough so that others wouldn't take it away first.

When she was setting the cage down, she lay on the ground and stretched her body forward. After finally setting it down, Xu Lai tried to stand up by bracing herself on the ground, but it was too dark and she couldn't see clearly. She missed her target and fell into the pond.

Grandpa was startled and threw the net over to check on her. Xu Lai was half-submerged in water and completely soaked.

"Xiao Lai, are you alright?" Grandpa asked, shining a flashlight.

"It's okay, I didn't fall," Xu Lai replied. The water in the pond wasn't deep. She pulled herself to the bank by the grass, and her grandfather pulled her up. She removed the grass from her body and shook off the water.

Grandpa laughed out loud: "How come it fell into the pond just because you put a cage in there?"

Xu Lai blushed, wrung out the water from her clothes, and asked, "How many cages are left to be placed?"

Grandpa pointed to the cages over there and said, "There aren't many left, just two. I can take care of them. You go back and take a bath."

Xu Lai took out the car keys, handed them to her grandfather, and said, "Then I'll walk back, you can ride your bike back."

Xu Lai couldn't wait to go back and take a bath. She was covered in the smell of mud from the pond, and she felt that if she stayed any longer, she would be pickled.

On her way home, she passed by the courtyards of other villagers. Xu Lai was thankful that most people were having dinner at home and not wandering around on the main road, otherwise the news of her falling into the fishpond would have spread by tomorrow.

Seeing the light at the front door, she felt a little more at ease. Her grandfather also returned on his electric scooter, entering the yard before her.

Xu Lai was walking home with her head down when she heard someone call out to her, "Xu Lai, what's with your outfit?"

She didn't even need to look up to know who it was. She was speechless. Couldn't he just pretend he didn't see her?

Zhao Qingyun saw her from afar. She walked forward with her head down, her clothes soaked through, like a defeated phoenix.

Xu Lai ignored him, went back to her room and took a shower. Only then did she feel alive again. She then hand-washed the clothes she had changed out of before throwing them into the washing machine, otherwise the washing machine would be full of mud and sand.

When watering the flowers at night, she deliberately chose a time when her neighbor wasn't on the balcony. Xu Lai was certain that if she ran into Zhao Qingyun, he would definitely laugh at her.

She quietly went out with the watering can, and when she got to the flowerpot, she saw a box of cold medicine with a piece of paper underneath it. Xu Lai picked it up and read: "Preventing colds."

She smiled, but muttered, "It was just falling into the fishpond once, I'm perfectly healthy."

While editing videos that night, she almost burst out laughing when she saw the scene of falling into the pond. Luckily, her phone was recording the video, otherwise she would have been soaked in the water with her.

After some consideration, she decided to keep the footage of her falling into the fishpond so that netizens could have some fun.

She got up at five in the morning; she was going to collect the cages today and wanted to see how many she could catch.

Grandpa had just gotten up. It wasn't summer yet, and the sky was just beginning to lighten around 5 a.m. She put on her rubber boots and went to the fishpond with Grandpa.

Grandpa searched through each fish trap one by one, and Xu Lai held her phone close to take a picture, revealing that there were fish inside.

Grandpa packed up the cages, intending to take them home and disassemble them later. The space here was too small to move around freely, and they hadn't brought any buckets with them.
