Chapter 15: Awakening the Cleaning Magic
The garden was awakened.
This was the first time in Elvira's life that she saw plants surging with life.
Ivy spread out from the high wall, its branches and leaves retreating to the other end of the wall. The bushes stretched out their branches and used the gardening shears that flew out from nowhere to trim themselves into the right shape... Everything here began to move, the desolation faded away and order returned.
"We need to spend some more time to look inside the house. It's been so long since we've been here, and we don't know what it looks like. I hope there's only dust inside." Darien sniffed, as if he could already smell the stale smell in the house.
Seville walked quickly, crossed the garden, and came to the door of the house they were going to live in.
A key that can open all the doors in the world was inserted into the keyhole, turned two and a half turns, and after three clicks, the door opened.
Darien paused at the bottom of the steps, so as not to get too close and get dust in his face.
Sewell pushed the door sideways, and fresh air finally rushed into the dark porch after many years. As the wind blew in, countless dust sprites were immediately brought into the sunlight.
Mr. Mage finally failed to dodge and was hit in the face by the elves rushing around.
“Cough cough cough cough——”
Coughing sounds were heard one after another in the garden. Not only Darien, but everyone who was closer was blinded by the hurricane of dust. This house really needed a thorough cleaning.
"It's really choking here." Mrs. Fitch waved her headscarf vigorously, making a clear path. It would be safe to follow her.
Darien followed Mrs. Fitch and finally entered the house.
"Go open all the windows. The dust in here smells so bad it makes me want to sneeze," he said.
Everyone moved, finding the windows in the house and opening them, allowing fresh air and sunlight to flood into the room, making the smell a little better.
"ah!"
Elvira’s scream suddenly came.
"What's wrong, Miss Elvira?" Darien turned around immediately.
"Yes, there are mice! They just ran over the back of my feet! Forgive me, I don't hate mice, but it's really scary when they suddenly appear like this." Elvira was still a little frightened. A few mice jumped onto the back of her feet and made her jump directly onto the sofa.
Sewell picked up the broom beside him and asked, "Which direction did they run to?"
The house was bright with the windows open, and the floor was covered with a mess of footprints left by shoes of various sizes. On top of these footprints were a row of small paw prints. According to these scattered small paw prints, people were running in all directions.
"Leave it to us!" Mrs. Fitch pulled Fitch over, rolled up her sleeves and looked for mice on the floor.
It was a good idea to leave mouse matters to mice. After a while, a nest of mice was neatly arranged on the floor of the living room, all with their front paws tucked into their bellies, like a parade formation waiting for inspection.
"So many rats..." Darien's eyes circled over the rats' heads.
The young mice couldn't help but stretch out their claws to cover their cold heads. Being stared at by the wizard was like an eagle flying over their heads, and they would be picked up in the next moment.
"Sevier, put down the broom. Forget it, just take it and find a basket to sweep them all in." Darien said.
The phalanx of mice standing in place immediately began to squeak.
Elvira was still standing on the sofa, and Kenneth was standing next to the mice out of curiosity. Hearing this, they all looked towards Darien.
"Are we going to throw them all out?" Kenneth looked at the pile of rats and then at the Fitch couple.
The Fitches had great confidence in Darien; they believed he would not harm the mice.
"I need a lot of servants to give them a bath, and they come just in time. 1, 2, 3, 4..." Darien said as he counted the mice.
"From now on, you will work for us and get a large portion of food every day, including cheese, bread, sausage, roast chicken...anything that can appear on the table will be your labor remuneration." Sewell walked over with a broom and a basket.
The mice chattered among themselves for a while, then lined up and jumped into the basket one by one.
Also needing a bath was Pluto, who rushed into the house and bumped around, eventually getting entangled in the dusty curtains.
The sofa under Elvira's feet moved, and then her shoulder was poked by the curtain next to her.
The furniture around her started moving, moving their legs to run outside. The sofa under her feet urged her to get down quickly, as it could not keep up with the main group.
Darien directed the furniture to run outside, and when the house became extremely empty, many brooms and ostrich feather dusters flew in, sweeping away the dust and cobwebs everywhere.
Sewell placed the basket containing the mice next to a water pump. Mrs. Fitch pushed over a large wooden basin and pressed the pump down hard. After a few seconds, clear water gushed out of the pump.
"Come in, wash our fur and paws clean, put on some soap bubbles, wet our fur and wash it until it's shiny, then we'll all be clean mice." Mrs. Fitch had a happy expression on her face as she rubbed soap bubbles into the basin.
Elvira stood in the garden with her skirt lifted up. Her surroundings were in a mess. The souls of the furniture were awakened. They tried hard to shake off the dust and clean the old stains, making themselves shine bit by bit.
An incomparable joy welled up from deep within her heart. Everything here made her happy. Even the bouncing furniture made her feel relaxed.
"Would you like to eat it?" Jenny Piglet stuffed roses into her mouth and tugged at her skirt.
The neatly trimmed rose bushes in front of him were eaten until only the buds were left, and the ones that were in full bloom went into the pig's stomach.
"Thank you, I won't eat it." Elvira rubbed her head.
"Don't eat my flowers." Darien came over and grabbed Jenny Pig.
The piglet in his hand was so solid that the wizard's arms suddenly fell down.
Sewell immediately teleported over, took the piglet and returned it to Kenneth.
Jenny Pig quickly grabbed the two flowers in front of her with her hands, and she would have to take them with her if she couldn't eat them.
"Puchi." Elvira couldn't help laughing.
"Ms. Elvira, we will stay here for a while. Your wish is to get to know your mother. This time is enough for you to become friends with her." Darien said.
"Thank you for doing this for me." Elvira said softly.
"You're welcome. We need to do some identity disguise, so from today on you will be my sister to the outside world. I don't have a last name, you can make one up. Once this place is cleaned up, I'll take you out to make some new clothes, and then find a suitable time to visit your mother." Darien said.
"Okay, brother. From today on my name is Elvira Ferrers. We are from the South and just moved here recently." Elvira said.
"Very good, then I am Sir Ferrers." Darien nodded.
Impersonating a noble is no small matter, but Mr. Mage actually has documents proving his noble identity. When he needs to use it, he just needs to take it out and change his name.
Groups of rats took a bath by the water pump, and Sewell cast a wind-summoning spell on them, blowing a large group of rats to and fro.
"Did you bring my crucible? And my alchemical material cabinet." Darien walked to Seville and said.
"Now that everything is here, do you want to keep it here or set up a new room?" asked Sewell.
"Hmm." Darien looked around. It was a mess all around. Refining medicine in such an environment would definitely cause chaos!
"Okay, I'll go upstairs and pick a suitable room now." Seville was very good at reading expressions and knew what Darien needed at once.
The dusty house is now filled with flying soap bubbles. Many mops dipped in soapy water are carefully scrubbing every inch of the floor. The originally dingy room soon becomes as bright and clean as new.
The cleaned furniture was rearranged back into the room, and this small manor, which had been lonely for a long time, was reopened. Within a few days, people living nearby would find that a family had moved in overnight.
Darien was brewing a transmutation potion in the new alchemy room. During his short stay here, the small manor needed servants, and hiring mice was the perfect choice.
"Did you bring the herbal seeds? Find an inconspicuous corner to plant them and dig them all up when we leave." Darien said to Seville while stirring the crucible.
"I've brought them all. I'll have Kenneth and Jenny cultivate the wasteland before dinner," Sevier replied.
Darien nodded in satisfaction.
The biggest advantage of this kind of cross-time and space travel is that it can exploit time loopholes. They stay here for several months and only a few hours pass when they go back. They only brought a few boxes when they came, and they will definitely bring several trucks of things when they go back.
Darien has made up his mind that when the time is right, he will develop some business here and hopefully make hundreds or thousands of gold coins.
After the transformation potion was made, Mrs. Fitch selected the more mature and stable mice, and they were transformed into servants of the manor.
After Sewell gave the mouse servants some emergency training, this home became a qualified aristocratic home.
"I like mice the most," Darien said to Sewell. "They are smart and can learn new things easily. And most importantly, they just need enough food."
"A crow can do the same," Sewell said modestly.
"You're right." Darien looked him over from head to toe.
He loves free stuff the most.
It took a lot of time to clean the house and trim the garden. Every part of the house needed to be thoroughly inspected. If there were any cracks or broken beams or doorposts, they had to be replaced to avoid being buried in the ruins while sleeping.
Moving is a very tiring task, even with the help of magic. By the time everyone sat down to rest, the brilliant sunset had already arrived outside the window.
"We didn't bring enough food, so let's have a simple meal tonight. We have bread, butter, ham, steak, mushroom sauce, cabbage and cherry tomatoes, and it will be a simple dinner." said Mrs. Fitch.
"We have to go out and buy some food tomorrow." Sevier said to Darien.
Because Mr. Mage repeatedly brought the Tower to the brink of debt crisis, Mr. Crow successfully took over the financial power of the Tower, but every expenditure still had to be approved by Mr. Mage first.
"I want fruit and creamy pastries. I haven't had fish in a long time. I also want beef liver and roast pigeon." Darien said while licking his lips.
Sewell took out the small notebook he carried with him and wrote as he asked, "Buy some apples, crabapples, oranges, and pears. Fish should be sea bass, salmon, and eels. Also, buy enough butter and milk. How about buying a basket of eggs and a few more hens at the end?"
Darien agreed with the proposal.
Outside the window, Gaota's only precious little hen was strolling on the lawn. The production of one egg a day could not meet Gaota's egg demand. It was time to raise more chickens.
"Me, me, me! I want apples and cabbage too!" Jenny Pig raised her hands high.
"Plus a sack of apples and a cartload of cabbages. And Miss Elvira, is there anything you need?" Darien said.
