Chapter 69: Hawkins, Debtor
Darien's eyes widened when he suddenly heard these words.
But it was too late.
After the long kiss ended, he began to feel dizzy. It was the effect of the potion. The memories in the illusion, along with the kiss and these words, fell apart and vanished in a short moment.
Darien opened his eyes again.
"What's going on? Why are we here?" He rubbed his forehead, a little confused about the situation.
"You just drank the potion that caused you to lose your memory." Sewell said with a smile.
"So what happened that made me drink that potion?" Darien asked.
"Some memories you don't really want to recall," Sevier replied.
"Then do you know what it is?" Darien rubbed his forehead. He really didn't like this feeling of being out of control.
"I'm sorry, master, I didn't know either." Sewell shook his head regretfully.
"You drank it too, right? But how do you remember?" Darien glanced and saw two empty potion bottles.
"My dear master, my housekeeper's log records it clearly. Although there is no reason stated, it will help to organize the work." Sevier replied.
"Let me see." Darien opened his hand towards him.
Sewell put a palm-sized booklet in and considerately opened it to the latest page.
Darien glanced at it and saw that it said they would enter a fantasy world, collect their reward after completing the commission, and then drink the potion.
It's very simple. We can only see what they did, but ignore the whole process.
Since he has taken the initiative to forget it, it must not be a good memory. He should not delve into it any further.
"What time is it now? Go to the kitchen and see if Mrs. Fitch has made any snacks. Bring a tray to the study. I want to read for a while." Darien returned the book to him.
"It's 4:13 in the afternoon, time for afternoon tea. The snacks should have just come out of the oven. How about pairing the snacks with rose tea?" Seville asked.
"Okay, go ahead. Darien said."
They went out one after another, one going upstairs and the other going downstairs, heading in different directions.
When Sewell entered the kitchen, Mrs. Fitch was frosting the warm chocolate cupcakes.
Seeing Seville come in, she said happily, "You're back! Come on, give me an answer! I'm stuck on a difficult decision. Which fruit would be better to decorate this chocolate cake with? Cherries or strawberries?"
Sewell smiled and replied, "Cherries, big cherries with green stems dotted on the cream look beautiful."
Mrs. Fitch clapped her hands and said, "That's it!"
Seville opened the tea cabinet, took out the roses, and went to find a set of tea sets with roses embossed on them. When boiling water, he pulled a wet handkerchief from his sleeve and threw it into the fire.
The blazing flame in the fireplace was dampened by the wet towel, causing half of the flame to extinguish.
"You threw something in there, and the poor flames are struggling on the wood." Mrs. Fitch noticed that the flames in the fireplace had become much smaller and there was something hanging on the wood.
"I accidentally dropped my handkerchief in there, and it wiped the tea that was accidentally spilled. I don't think it can be rescued from the flames." Sevier replied.
About ten minutes later, Darian received his afternoon tea for the day, which included cherry chocolate cake and rose tea. The delicate and small snacks were just enough to replenish his energy.
For the next few days, the succubus Seren's business was completely forgotten because there were new troubles in the tower.
"Hawkins, is your house finished?" Darien asked this question for the nth time.
"There are still a few parts missing. I think I need a cellar and a attic, so the construction schedule has been delayed again," Hawkins replied.
"Your dragon has grown very big now and is no longer suitable for living here," said Darien.
"It's very well-behaved..." Hawkins whispered.
Before he could finish his words, a series of loud clanging noises were heard outside the room; it was the sound of a pile of things being overturned and falling to the ground.
"Haha, so good?" Darien said with a forced smile.
"I'll pay for it." Hawkins touched his wallet.
"You'll go bankrupt," Darien said. "My stuff is valuable, and its appetite is growing. You should release it."
"I've definitely squandered most of my savings," Hawkins sighed. "It's time to go to the gold mine again. For the sake of my future livelihood, it's worth making some necessary sacrifices."
"What gold mine? Aren't you relying on the inheritance from your ancestors to survive until now?" asked Darien.
"That's also one of the legacies of my ancestors. I have never been there, and the elders in my family also warned me not to go to that cave unless I am in dire need of money," said Hawkins.
"Didn't they tell me what was in there?" Darien asked.
"There's money there," Hawkins said without hesitation, then he quickly added, "That's the only information they've revealed. They wouldn't tell me anything when I asked again."
Darien was about to ask again when there was another sound outside, like the clatter of broken porcelain being swept together.
"Sevier? Is that you?" he asked.
A moment later, Seville came in from outside. "Yes, master, I was just cleaning up all the items that were knocked over outside the door, including two crystal chandeliers, five vases, three gemstone wall lamps, two display cabinets... and the floor was also damaged to varying degrees."
Hawkins was almost fainting from listening to this.
Darien asked, "Are they all broken into pieces? I mean the gems and crystals. How much gold did they cost when they were purchased, and how much does it cost to replace them?"
Sewell calculated for a moment and said, "They were purchased for a total of twelve thousand three hundred and four gold coins. You'll need to ask Miss White Stork if you want to replace them. It took all the gems and crystals. I reinforced the locks on all the rooms last night. Only the corridor and the living room were damaged."
Hawkins covered his face. "Zephy... That's the nature of dragons. It lacks a proper teacher. I really should take it back. I need the dwarves to build me another dragon's nest."
Darien said, "Do you have any money left? If you do, please pay my bill first. You know, I rarely accept IOUs."
Hawkins shook his head. "I can't afford such an expensive bill. Would you like to go to the Golden Cave with me? You know, I'm not a very good magician in combat. I'm worried that I won't be able to come back once I go in."
Darien said, "Yes, but it's not a free service. However, since you owe me money, I can charge a little less, 20 gold coins."
Hawkins was so moved that he burst into tears: "Darian, I knew you were a good person!"
There was another loud noise of something being knocked over outside.
Darien was almost at the end of his patience. "Hawkins, I'm going to take necessary measures. To stop your dragon from causing trouble, if you don't take it away from here, I'll have to shrink it and put it in a cage."
Hawkins waved his hand quickly: "We'll take it with us when we leave. How about we set off now?"
Darien said, "Not very well. I still need to make some preparations. Food and water are necessary, as well as potions and protective gear."
Sewell said, "Good master."
Darien looked at Hawkins and said, "I'll give you half an hour. You better catch the dragon that's causing trouble."
Hawkins wiped his sweat and said, "This is necessary."
Half an hour later, Hawkins hurried to the door of the Gorse Flower Garden with a shrunk green dragon on his head. Darien and Seville were already waiting for him.
"Push the door and take us in," said Darien.
Hawkins nodded, pushed open the door, and came to his half-built house. A group of dwarves were swinging their strong arms, sawing a log into boards.
"Your new house looks good. It's taller and stronger, and more spacious inside." Darien commented.
A tall, beautiful stone house stood before them. The outer outline had been built, but the interior was empty. The dwarves were sawing wood to make window sills and doors. The furniture inside was almost burned and all had to be remade.
"After my last experience, I think I need a more solid house. After it is completely completed, I will also paint protective magic circles on each wall." said Hawkins.
"Hey Hawkins! You're here! Take a look at what kind of carvings you like, and we can carve your favorite patterns on your windows and doors." The leading dwarf came over and greeted them, "Ah, hello to you too, gentlemen!"
"Hello." Darien said with a smile.
"Hello," said Sewell.
"I like sunflowers, so let's carve sunflowers on them," said Hawkins.
The dwarf and Hawkins discussed for a while, while Darien and Sevier waited nearby. After Hawkins finished giving the instructions, they could go to their real destination.
Hawkins brought them far away from the dwarves before mentioning the Golden Cave: "We need to head into the woods. It's going to take quite a while, maybe half the afternoon. If nothing unexpected happens, we should be able to reach the cave before sunset."
Darien said, "I sincerely suggest that you build a small house next to this cave, so that you can just open the door next time you come."
Hawkins said, "That's a good idea. Why didn't my ancestors know you? If they knew you, it would be much easier to get there today."
Darien said, "Then can I also tell you that I held you in my arms when you were a child?"
Sewell chuckled behind him, and Hawkins rubbed his arms and complained, "This kind of joke isn't funny at all."
Hawkins took out an old map. According to his ancestors, this was a map that only people with family blood could understand. This map ensured that they could successfully reach the Golden Cave.
Darien's least favorite trek began.
At first he could still walk on his own, but when he felt tired he drank a bottle of transformation potion, turned himself into an owl, and squatted on Seville's shoulder to move forward.
After hurrying for a long time, the group finally arrived outside the Golden Cave.
Darien changed back into human form, looked at Hawkins and said, "Are you sure this is the place? It looks like a cliff."
