Chapter 99 Did I Make a Mistake in Changing
Just like every time before, the potion took effect within just a few minutes of drinking it.
In the dim light, Ada's mother's face was changing rapidly, her skin surging and her bones deforming quickly. There was a kind of pain in this process that could not be removed, because the bones and flesh were being melted and reshaped. Darian had tried his best to reduce the pain to a minimum.
Mother Ada did not scream, but gritted her teeth and swallowed all the pain into her stomach. The pain was so severe that she collapsed to the ground.
She used all her strength to tear the headscarf off her hands, clenching them tightly in an attempt to contain all the pain. The muffled cry stuck in her throat sounded like the roar of an animal.
Darien listened to the muffled sound quietly, his heart pounding. He was worried whether Mother Ada could endure the pain, but he could not help her more.
A feeling of guilt welled up in his heart.
Fortunately, this process did not last long. The reshaping of her bones and flesh gradually slowed down, the pain gradually receded like the tide, and her appearance and voice were changed.
Darien initially thought about adding some wisdom, integrity and other good qualities into the potion, but after thinking it over, he decided to just follow Ada's mother's wishes and only gave it the appearance and voice.
Sometimes getting too many extra things will make you doubt your current life. Darien will not stay here to pay attention to more changes, and he will not be able to continue to satisfy Ada's mother's more wishes.
Mother Ada was lying on the ground, the aftereffects of the pain from the complete rebirth still hanging over her, making her limbs limp and unable to get up immediately.
Darien saw her new appearance by the dim light of her hand.
Compared to her previous deformed and terrifying appearance, Mother Ada is now a woman who looks very gentle and kind, with a gentle and honest face. She is not particularly beautiful but can make people feel very comfortable.
It was very similar to what Darien had imagined. He had always thought that Mother Ada's soul was like this.
After resting enough on the ground, Mother Ada got up and touched her face. It was smooth, with rounded curves that were no longer rugged. She stood up and took a few steps. The lame leg could stand straight again, and she no longer swayed when she walked.
This was enough. She knelt down in front of the statue again with tears of gratitude and prayed: "Thank you, great Lord Liam, you have given a humble woman a new life. I will always pray for you. My gratitude is difficult to describe in words..."
Her voice was no longer hoarse, and although it was still low, it was much more pleasant to listen to than before.
Mother Ada did not stay in the prayer room for long this time, because she was anxious to return to her room to check her face again in the mirror. She couldn't wait to see her other life.
After she left, Seville, who was hiding in the corner, walked out, climbed over the low wall of the orphanage and returned to the house at the bridge head.
Darien was very happy. The matter of Ada's mother had come to an end. Now the only thing he needed to worry about was the death of the magician, but the date was unknown.
But based on the current situation, there is only a 20% chance that Julian is a magician. That guy really doesn't look like he has any big secrets.
Could it be that there is some unknown guy hiding in this town, and who suddenly replaced Julian when the incident happened?
Darien sighed wistfully.
The next morning, Darien and Sevier took a walk near the orphanage.
Mother Ada's responsibilities in the orphanage are night patrols and preparing meals for the children. She rarely comes into contact with people from outside. Receiving guests to the orphanage, fundraising, purchasing, and other things that require appearances are done by Mother Teresa.
The orphanage was small, so there were only these two nuns. The director of the orphanage was a wealthy lady who lived in a more affluent area and didn't come here very often.
Darien wanted to know how Ada's mother was doing now, so after visiting the orphanage, he thought for a moment, pulled Sewell in, and pretended to adopt a child.
As expected, the person who received them was Mother Teresa.
"You said you wanted to adopt a child?" Mother Teresa asked. "Would you like to adopt a boy or a girl? Where do you live? What's their name..."
She was a fairly responsible caregiver and asked a lot of questions very carefully.
Darien had to start making up stories on the spot, and sometimes when he couldn't continue, he would look at Sewell for help.
"Yes, we need to adopt a girl, preferably no older than 6 years old, but not under 3 years old. I hope she has red hair because our deceased mother had red hair, and preferably light gray pupils. This is what our sister specifically asked for." Sewell made up a paragraph with a smile.
"Are you really here to adopt a child?" Mother Teresa blurted out.
These words were a bit outrageous. They hadn't even met the children yet and didn't understand their personalities. Normally, shouldn't she be the one recommending those well-behaved children who were suitable for adoption?
Of course, Darien and Sevier did not really want to adopt a child. Darien also regretted walking in here on impulse. They should have drunk some potion to sneak in.
"Of course we really want to adopt a child. My sister dreamed of the god Lord Liam, who told her in the dream that our deceased mother was in this small town. That's why we wanted to try our luck." Darian continued to make up the story.
"So that's how it is. I'm sorry there's no way I can help you. We don't have such a girl here," said Sister Teresa.
"It doesn't matter. Since we are here, why don't we donate some money to the orphanage so that the children there can get something better." Darien offered.
"It's so kind of you to do this! Sister Ada, I, and the children in the orphanage will be very grateful to you!" Sister Teresa smiled gratefully. "You are all kind gentlemen. Lord Liam will definitely look after you."
"Can we visit this orphanage and learn about the children's daily lives to determine how much money we need to donate?" said Sewell.
"Of course. Now is the children's work time. Sister Ida and I are alone and there is no way to finish all the work in the orphanage, so the children will help us with some simple chores." said Sister Teresa.
"Why don't you consider requesting for another nun so that you can handle the work?" asked Darien.
"That's not an easy thing to do." Mother Teresa smiled.
After the small talk, they followed Mother Teresa to visit the orphanage.
Darien feels both familiar and unfamiliar with everything here. He only stayed here until he was 6 years old and was familiar with this place through a child's eyes. Now, looking at it from a different perspective, familiar things look a little different.
They walked past the prayer room, the classroom where the children usually had classes, the vegetable garden and the children's rooms, and finally saw Mother Ada next to a well.
Mother Ada was wearing a veil that covered almost her entire face, leaving only a small gap for her eyes.
The children used wooden basins to help wash clothes. The orphanage did not use soap, but cheaper alkali blocks that smelled strange.
"Our children are all here. This is Sister Ada. Ada, these are the two gentlemen who are going to donate to the orphanage." Theresa introduced.
"I'm Todd and he's Blake." Darien made up something.
"I'm Sister Ida." Mother Ida just nodded to them.
The children looked over with curiosity. Sewell looked back but did not see little Darien among them.
The children who wash clothes here are all older children, while the younger ones may be washing clothes somewhere else.
After meeting Mother Ada, Darien didn't want to visit the orphanage anymore. He found an excuse to leave and gave Mother Teresa some money before leaving. He and Sevier quickly retreated.
"Sevier, I think I did something wrong." Darien sighed on the way back.
"Why do you say that?" Sewell asked him.
"Because Mother Ada is wearing a veil. I imagined everything to be too beautiful, thinking that as long as it is God's blessing, Mother Ada will be able to appear in front of everyone with a new look smoothly." Darien sighed again.
"Yes, you did make a mistake," said Sewell.
"So what should I do to make amends and let everyone in the orphanage see God's blessing?" asked Darien.
"You don't need to do anything more. The children in the orphanage and Mother Teresa didn't find it strange," Sewell said. "Sister Ida doesn't show her face most of the time, right? Many people don't know what she looks like. And those who do know her understand why she wants to cover her face, and they won't take the initiative to lift her veil."
"Your hypothesis is indeed valid. Doesn't this also prove that I didn't help Mother Ada at all, but instead caused her trouble?" Darien said.
"That's not entirely true." Sewell thought for a moment. "Sister Ida was quite happy. She had a normal face now. This was the precious gift she had been waiting for. Did you see her again later?"
"No, the orphanage completely disappeared after I came back here. But you have a point. Let's observe it for a few more days," said Darien.
"Is that so?" Seville didn't ask any more questions, and they put the topic aside.
In the next few days, Mother Ada did not take off her veil, and Julian went to the orphanage on time every day to give roses to Mother Teresa. Nothing much changed.
To be on the safe side, Darien and Sevier even followed Julian home, but found nothing in his house.
Darien couldn't remember the date and didn't know when the sudden disaster happened, so he could only wait anxiously day after day.
Until Mother Ada, carrying a suitcase, boarded a carriage at the side door of the orphanage, heading for an unknown destination.
