Chapter 53: Breath of New Life

[Command... conflict... clear... failed...]

【who I am……? 】

The cold metallic sound and the painful roar of human beings intertwined and competed fiercely in his throat!

Wen Shifei rushed to him, watching this horrific scene of self-mutilation. The huge shock and heartache almost suffocated her! She rushed forward desperately, tightly grasping Yun Zhan's mechanical arm that was trying to self-destruct, and used all her strength to try to stop him!

"Yun Zhan! Stop! Look at me! It's me! Wen Shifei!" Her voice was filled with tears, and her vision was blurred by tears. "You're back! You're already back! Don't let it win! Don't let that damn thing win!"

Yun Zhan's body trembled violently. The bladed claw that had pierced his shoulder could not penetrate any deeper, but Wen Shifei's force prevented it from going any further. He lowered his head, his face, covered in a metal mask, only inches from Wen Shifei. His eyes, filled with pain and struggle, stared intently, blankly, yet with a faint glimmer of hope, at Wen Shifei's tear-stained face.

The chaotic fragments of memory were like a violent torrent, impacting his shattered core of consciousness.

[Wen...Shi Fei...]

[Protect...the light...]

[Explosion...Promise...Come back...]

[It hurts… It hurts so much…]

Get out...

"Come back..." Wen Shifei tightly grasped his cold mechanical arm, her voice like a tearful oath, "You promised to wait for me to come back and take you away! You still owe me a life! Yun Zhan! Come back to me--!!!"

Her cry was like a stabilizing force thrown into the core of the storm of consciousness!

The chaos and madness in Yun Zhan's eyes surged like a tidal wave! That faint glimmer of humanity suddenly brightened a bit! The dark blue claw that had pierced his shoulder slowly withdrew, inch by inch, with great difficulty! Dark red "blood" flowed violently along the wound!

His right hand, which had been gripping the mechanical arm, finally loosened its grip and drooped limply. His tall body swayed, as if drained of all its strength, and he fell forward heavily, held up by Wen Shifei with all his might.

He leaned against Wen Shifei's frail shoulders, his head, covered in a metal mask, drooping limply. His heavy breaths, thick with the scent of blood and the sweet smell of coolant, puffed against the crook of Wen Shifei's neck. The terrifying mechanical arm still shone with a faint blue light, but it had temporarily quieted down, like a dormant beast.

Wen Shifei hugged his cold, heavy body tightly, feeling his weak yet real heartbeat, tears welling silently. She looked up at the smoke-filled, devastated battlefield, at the convoy in the distance clearing landslides and re-opening the road, and at the mountains, still shrouded in sandstorms, their outlines already faintly visible ahead, a symbol of hope.

Dawn had not yet arrived, and the journey was still long and treacherous. But the heavy body in his arms, struggling between cold machinery and the remnants of humanity, and the hideous, slowly solidifying wound on his shoulder, all clearly marked one fact:

Every step on the road to rebirth is soaked in blood and fire, accompanied by the cruel breath of destruction and rebirth.
