Chapter 16 The Struggle for Butler Power

"Miss Coral, how is the young master?"

“Chunyao is being taken care of. But the young master misses you very much at night.”

"I'll drink the medicine." Ye Yunniang took the medicine and drank it all in one gulp.

Coral came to visit, then went off to be busy.

Ye Yunniang asked Li'er, "What's going on with the Third Madam?"

Pear told Ye Yunniang what she knew.

The doctor came to take her pulse and ask questions. He concluded that it wasn't due to fright, but rather from eating cold food.

After some questioning, it was learned that a maid in the old lady's courtyard had deliberately used pastries to lure Jiang Fangrui into stealing the Linglong Tower.

Who is in the old lady's courtyard?

"clove."

"Why would she do that?" Ye Yunniang asked, puzzled.

"But is it to avenge Nurse Ding?" Li'er guessed.

Ye Yunniang couldn't believe that someone was trying to harm her.

"Sister, don't blame yourself. This isn't your fault. It was Nanny Ding who made a mistake and, instead of repenting, blamed you." Pear said, feeling indignant on Ye Yunniang's behalf.

Ye Yunniang thought the same thing, but the series of events triggered by this incident left her feeling somewhat unsettled.

Ye Yunniang was unaware that these were merely the surface issues; the deeper conflict lay in the struggle for control of the household.

Madam Jiang the Second is pregnant. With Madam Jiang the First in the capital, the management of the Jiang family has fallen to Madam Jiang the Third and Fourth.

Jiang Mingrui is the old lady's biological son. The old lady will most likely give the power of managing the household to the fourth wife, Jiang.

Jiang Mingyu was not born to the old lady. His birth mother, Aunt Xue, relied on the old master's favor to constantly compete with the old lady.

Bai Xiuxiu was unwilling to accept this. When she married into the Jiang family, she was the daughter of a scholar. The Bai family wasn't exactly wealthy, just barely making ends meet. Of the 80 dan (a unit of weight) of betrothal gifts given by the Jiang family, the Bai family kept most of them, only allowing Bai Xiuxiu to take 20 boxes, which mostly contained worthless items.

Bai Xiuxiu had no money, while Jiang Mingyu was always pedantic and loved buying calligraphy and paintings.

The Jiang family did not split up, and Bai Xiuxiu received 50 taels of silver per month, with a fixed allowance for her daily food and clothing.

If you want something better, you have to pay for it yourself.

Bai Xiuxiu had no money and had always coveted the power of housekeeping.
