Chapter 23
Hiss...uh...how did I get back?
When I finished washing my face and picked up my phone, I saw Qi En's message, saying that I have a terrible alcohol tolerance, but my behavior when drunk is okay, and I don't cause trouble when I'm drunk.
Just as I was about to put down my phone, my new boss messaged in the group chat, demanding that we work overtime to revise the plan. Urgent!
What's the rush? Are you in such a hurry to be reborn?
It was already 2 PM when I finished making the changes, and Jiang Jiang was starving. I cooked some noodles with an egg, and it was light and refreshing, but it tasted pretty good. My cooking skills have really improved.
In the evening, I took Jiang Jiang out for a walk. We walked quite far, and it got rather boring staying in the neighborhood.
There's a dog park nearby that many children go to play. We don't come here often, so we made sure to let Jiang Jiang have a great time today.
Jiangjiang, an unknown black dog, has a very good temperament. It wandered onto a busy street, and you brought it to the office on your way to work. With my permission, a little black dog appeared in our home that evening.
I thought it was as black as soy sauce, so I suggested naming it "Jiangjiang" (酱酱), but you disagreed.
"no."
"Jiangjiang sounds nice, let's call her that."
I disagree.
Why?
"For no particular reason, just want to change it."
"Baby~"
"There's no room for discussion, my wife."
"Jiang Jiang~" I had barely uttered the name when I realized something was wrong.
"Jiang Jiang, Jiang Jiang..." I was just thinking when the little black dog suddenly let out a "woof," as if responding to me.
As soon as you saw it, you heartlessly threw the puppy into the cage, pounced on me and hugged me tightly, saying with dissatisfaction, "How dare you try to take it from me."
But as the saying goes, petting a dog is fun for a moment, but walking the dog is a pain and you'll want to bang your head on the bed.
When Jiang Jiang was a puppy, she was incredibly cute. A few months later, she suddenly grew to be quite big and needed a lot of exercise. Taking her for a walk every day became our most difficult goal.
Jiangjiang seems to be a mixed-breed dog. It loves it when you play ball with it. We usually take Jiangjiang for a walk in the neighborhood or nearby after dinner.
Last winter, it snowed one evening. Our usual walk should have been canceled, but it wasn't. We played in the snow even more wildly than Jiang Jiang. We didn't even use umbrellas. There were few people out in that weather, so we took Jiang Jiang's leash off. She ran right into the snow, and we were incredibly excited, since it hadn't snowed this much in years.
I breathed on my cold hands until they warmed up, then lifted my foot to warm your reddened ears. You smiled, looked down, pulled my hand into your pocket, and we walked forward hand in hand.
Amidst the swirling snowflakes, I vaguely felt as if we had grown old together.
...
When I got home in the evening, I found a book, lay down on the recliner, and started reading. It was a collection of memoirs, and reading it always made me feel both calm and sad. The writing seemed to be narrating something that had been lost.
Writing it down might be the way to end the loss here, because nothing can ever be more profound than this moment. So, let it stop.
After putting down the book, I was a little out of breath, so I nestled in the recliner and whispered, "Jiang Jiang."
Not long after, a warm nose came close. I patted Jiangjiang's head and kept calling out, "Jiangjiang."
Jiangjiang wagged her tail and cuddled with me, and I kept calling out, "Jiangjiang."
It circled me a few times, dropped the ball from its mouth, found a comfortable spot to lie down next to me, and wagged its tail perfunctorily every time I called it.
It realized I wasn't calling it.
