Turbid Light
"Is anyone home?"
The person banged on the door loudly. The two stood at the door for a while before Jiang Li came out to open the door. "Sister Xun, why are you here?"
Xun Muke asked Han Ming to bring the things in, "Come and visit the injured."
"What is this?" Jiang Li glanced at the supplements on the ground.
"If you're injured, you should take more care of yourself." Xun Muke looked around but didn't see the injured person. He asked, "Where is he?"
Jiang Li said, "Change clothes."
"oh."
"Ugh—" Han Ming pretended to vomit for the tenth time, but the lady in the driver's seat was still in high spirits.
Half an hour ago, Xun Muke, after delivering their gifts, said he would take them somewhere nice, and so he went on a trip with the injured patient, saying with conviction, "We can't waste such a great holiday. Look, it's rare that you're all off duty this National Day. The weather is perfect, the sun is shining, and everyone is so bright. It would be a shame not to go out!"
So this lady just left without saying where her destination was.
Driving quickly across the gravel road, not only Han Ming, who was prone to motion sickness, but even Jiang Li and Chen An, who were sitting in the back seat, couldn't stand it. Chen An grabbed the front seat and asked sincerely, "Is it really okay to drive like this?"
Xun Muke said without even turning her head: "No problem! Everything is under my control. My ten years of driving experience is no joke!"
Xun Muke looked through the rearview mirror and saw Jiang Li suddenly raise his hand, "Speak!"
"Report! Someone is abusing the injured!"
Xun Muke braked suddenly and then took off, saying, "The report is invalid and rejected!"
After torturing the gravel road one after another, Han Ming shouted happily when he saw the yellow sand road ahead, "Finally! Finally, we're on a smooth road! Thank God!"
Xun Muke glanced at him and said the coldest words in the calmest tone, "Emmm, actually we don't go that way, we go that way." After that, without waiting for the other party to see clearly, he turned sharply down a steep slope. The strong feeling of weightlessness made Han Ming close his eyes and scream.
"Did we flip over?!" Jiang Li had never seen anyone's driving skills so short of life.
After going down the slope, Xun Muke braked and breathed a sigh of relief, saying, "No, I've never flipped over on this slope. We're here, let's get off."
This place looked like a farmhouse, with gravel roads, yellow mud, and tiled houses. A few steps down was the gurgling stream in front of the door, and a few fat geese were raised in the small pond. Xun Muke asked them to sit under the awning, then called out affectionately, "Uncle, give us two geese. We'll have lunch here today."
Jiang Li touched his plastered leg and asked, "Are you okay?"
Chen An smiled and said, "What could be the problem? They haven't left yet."
It will take another two days for his leg to be removed. The weather is hot and he is afraid that the plaster will damage his leg. He kept paying attention to Chen An's expression along the way, but he didn't seem to be in any discomfort and seemed quite happy.
"Do you three often hang out together?" Jiang Li asked.
"If the three of us have time, we'll go out together, but it's rare. Either I don't have time or Han Ming doesn't have time. Xun Muke is more free. She often finds some interesting or beautiful places. Han Ming and I will occasionally bring the team members out together."
"So is this the longest vacation you've ever had since you became a police officer?"
"Yes, because I never take more than seven days off."
The old man brought out two electric fans from the house, and the blades whirred. Jiang Li, eager to cool down, leaned close to Chen An and scratched his nose. "It won't be a lie if you become a police officer in the future, so young man, cherish your college years."
Jiang Li wrinkled her nose and lay on his legs. The wind blew over his head. Chen An's fingers ran through his flying hair. The years were quiet and good.
After ordering the dishes, Xun Muke and Han Ming helped the old man and his wife. From time to time, there were some chaotic sounds coming from the kitchen, and there seemed to be Xun Muke's screams, which formed a completely different scene from the stream.
"Hold on!"
Han Ming held a shovel and instructed her to pick up the snake's tail. Xun Muke shouted, "I don't dare!"
"Who said we wanted to drink snake soup?"
"Anyway...it's not me."
Several new dishes were added to the menu this time, the most eye-catching of which was snake soup. Xun Muke focused on this dish, but she didn't expect that she would have to prepare the ingredients herself!
The two were in a stalemate when suddenly the snake, which was supposed to be dead, moved its tail. Han Ming was so scared that he dropped the snake and hugged Xun Muke, saying incoherently, "It, it's moving! Mom!"
Even at this time, Xun Muke still did not forget to mock him, "Don't you call yourself a brave snake slayer?"
The old man and woman picked up the snake, shook it in front of them, and said with a smile: "It's dead, it's a muscle reaction, don't be afraid." Then they disposed of the snake.
At twelve o'clock noon, wisps of smoke emerged from the chimneys on the roofs, and the fragrance from the kitchen drifted from there to the entire farm village.
After this table was finished, more and more people came. The four of them had already started eating. Xun Muke explained, "This place is very famous. If you don't come early, you won't be able to get it."
She pointed at the cars that kept coming in and said, "Look, they'll have to wait for a long time, probably until one or two in the afternoon."
The table is full of home-cooked dishes, which are very fragrant and different from the pre-prepared dishes in the city, which have the aroma of wok.
Han Ming took a bite of his rice and asked, "How did you find this place?"
Xun Muke paused for a moment, "How did they discover that? It has to be traced back to ancient times..."
"Okay, shut up." Han Ming knew she was going to start talking nonsense again.
"Come, try this snake soup." Xun Muke showed a "kind" smile and poured him a spoonful of soup, which gave him goose bumps.
"Can you please not mention that word? I'm a little stressed." Han Ming said weakly.
"Okay, I'll spoil you this time and have some soup."
The light yellow soup has some oil foam floating on it, and it tastes very light, even with a sweet aftertaste.
“Delicious!”
After eating, Han Ming took the fishing rod he found and went fishing with Jiang Li. Only Xun Muke and Chen An were left sitting there drinking tea. She was very skilled in making tea. A sip of Qinggan Pu'er tea tasted slightly bitter on the tip of the tongue, with a long aftertaste.
"Do you come here often?"
Xun Muke leaned back on the rattan chair, which began to rock slowly. "Well, I like to come here when I have nothing to do. It's very lively here." She glanced sideways at the fish pond where the children gathered. They were talking around Han Ming and Jiang Li.
“I’ve been here since I was a little kid.”
Chen An remembered that Xun Muke was not from Jianan and had never mentioned that she had lived anywhere else before.
"When I was little?"
"Yeah." Xun Muke pointed to a white house opposite, "It's right there, we live there." Her voice became lower and lower, and her expression was no longer as relaxed as before.
Chen An keenly noticed that she was very sad.
"You know, there used to be a large lotus field here. Every summer, we would go down and pick the flowers. When the water level rose, they loved to compete to see who could hold their breath the longest." Xun Muke sighed as he looked at the flowing shallows. "The lotus flowers were planted in the mud, and the water in the pond wasn't this clear back then. They urged me to go in, so I did, plugging my nose and closing my eyes tightly. Later, after playing more, they learned to open their eyes underwater. There were many small fish swimming among the lotus stems in the pond, and they could see them, but I couldn't. Then, on my birthday, I got a pair of glasses that I could use for swimming, and I could see with them too."
What you see is not only fish, but also turbid light.
After every rain, raindrops stir up the mud in the pond. When the rain stops and the sky clears, light from the air shines into the bottom of the water, and the water is no longer clean. It smears the filth on itself along with the floating mud spots.
"If...one day, I fall, will you help me up?"
Xun Muke had a faint smile on her lips, but she looked at him with extremely serious eyes. However, this seriousness didn't last for more than a few seconds before it collapsed. She burst into laughter, "What's with that expression? Are you scared?"
"What the book says is true. A joking person who suddenly becomes serious can scare a group of people to death. This trick is really funny, hahahaha."
Chen An looked at her exaggerated and wild laughter and felt inexplicably worried.
They rushed back before dark. Before leaving, Chen An suddenly called her, "Come with me for the follow-up checkup this weekend."
Xun Muke hesitated for a moment, then nodded, "Okay."
