As November approaches, winter is coming and every household on the farm starts to burn kangs and warm walls. Although the weather outside is cold, the house is warm.
Su Jin sat cross-legged at home holding Hanhan. Lu Shiyi went to the office and Lu Bairen's yard every day, leaving the mother and son alone at home.
During these few months, Su Jin finished translating the four books he had promised, and Lu Bairen stayed completely.
In previous years, it would have snowed in November, but this year the situation was different. Since the beginning of winter, there has not been a single day of snowfall, and the drought has not been alleviated at all.
"Sister-in-law, the leader is leading a team to the mountains to rescue people." Zong Li knocked on the door outside. After getting Su Jin's permission, he hurried in to inform her of the details.
"What happened?" Su Jin's heart immediately sank when he heard that it was about saving someone.
"Sister-in-law, several villages at the foot of the mountain have joined forces for winter hunting because the drought outside is too severe. The food rations of every household are constantly decreasing. Two old hunters came down the mountain carrying prey some time ago, which made many people jealous." Zong Li complained.
Lu Boyuan helped to stop them everywhere, but who would have thought that the villagers did not inform the village chief and directly followed the hunters from the other five groups into the mountains.
"Why let Ayi go to rescue people?" Su Jin knew the situation outside. Before the weather got cold, Lu Shiyi asked Su Jin to send another batch of food to the black market.
Even in this situation, food on the black market is still in short supply.
"The hunters have been in the mountains for ten days, and there's been no news. My family is worried that something went wrong halfway up the mountain, so we have no choice but to notify the captains." Zong Li told Su Jin in detail, "I'm going to tell the old man about the situation now. Does your sister-in-law have anything to bring over?"
"It's been cold these past few days, so I prepared some cotton pants and some food for Grandpa and Grandma. They're in the bamboo basket by the door," Su Jin pointed to the large bamboo basket on the left side of the door. "I was thinking of asking Ayi to carry it over, could you please take it over?"
Lu Shiyi went to the mountain to look for someone, and he probably wouldn't be back for a while.
"Sister-in-law, I'll be here every day these days. If you have anything to bring to Grandpa, I'll deliver it. Please don't take Hanhan out. It's too cold outside." Zong Li carried a large bamboo basket on his back. "From what Elder Wei and Elder Song said, this year should be an unusually low temperature."
"Is there enough firewood on the farm?" Su Jin's heart skipped a beat when he heard this. Lu Shiyi had brought back a lot of coal before it got cold. He once muttered that this winter might be difficult to endure.
"That's enough. The logistics team members delivered meals to every household. The children couldn't bear it and ran out wearing cotton clothes, but almost all of them were frozen back." Zong Li looked at the chubby Hanhan. He didn't want Hanhan to be frozen.
Su Jin took five bottles of chili sauce from the cabinet next to her and placed them on the table.
"Take these back and have some for anyone on patrol," Su Jin instructed Zong Li, pointing at the chili sauce. "I made these using Sichuan's devil peppers. Just a little bit will make you feel hot."
"Sister-in-law, please leave a bottle. I heard that these peppers were sent by the commander's comrades." Zong Li hurriedly advised, "Whoever is on duty can have a bite."
"Take them all, so I don't have to ask Ayi to deliver them again." Su Jin reminded Zong Li and took out another bag of beef jerky. "This is for you. Wang Yuan went into the mountains with Ayi. When he comes back, you two can each have half."
Zong Li quickly put the beef jerky into his bag, and walked out carrying a bamboo basket and another bag.
Su Jin stood in front of the door and saw Zong Li out. A gust of cold wind blew by, and Su Jin shivered twice.
Zong Li walked quickly to the duty room carrying the package and placed five bottles of chili sauce on the table. Many team members gathered around him.
"My sister-in-law said it's made with Sichuan peppers. Eat some before you go out on patrol. It'll at least warm you up," Zong Li said, not putting down the bamboo basket. "I'm delivering something to the old man now. Both of them have cold legs. I wonder if they can handle it."
"The situation in the cowshed is not good. Elder Deng and Elder Wu don't have thick cotton clothes. Tiansi secretly sent a lot of things, but distant water cannot quench immediate thirst." Tianying came from outside and looked at Zong Li and said, "Why don't we send a quilt over there?"
"You're courting death!" Zong Li scolded. "What did the commander and the political commissar tell us before we went into the mountains? The Pigeon Committee members have to check the cowshed at all times. If we're not careful, we'll be implicated. Only when we're safe can we better protect Elder Wu and Elder Deng."
Zong Li's words made everyone think deeply. The team members stopped making noise and it was easier to think of a solution after calming down.
"I remember that the aunt in Wu's family can do needlework. If that doesn't work, we can use a military quilt as the inner core and sew a layer of old cloth on the outside." Tianying thought for a long time and asked everyone directly.
"Tianying, I'm going to the old man's yard. You go and ask my aunt if she can help make the quilt." Zong Li looked at the team members and said.
The platoon leader and deputy platoon leader of the guard platoon followed Lu Shiyi into the mountains. Before leaving, they specifically handed the guard platoon over to Zong Li for command. The team members admired Zong Li's fighting skills and were sincerely convinced of him.
"Okay!" Tianying followed Zong Li out of the house.
When Zong Li knocked on the door, Uncle Yang opened the gate and watched Zong Li hand the bamboo basket to Uncle Yang.
"Go in, the old man is waiting for you!" Uncle Yang looked at Zong Li coming over and admired Lu Bairen's foresight.
After lunch, Lu Bairen told Uncle Yang to call Zong Li into the house. Uncle Yang thought it was Lu Shiyi coming.
"Ayi went to the mountains?" Lu Bairen looked at Zong Li and asked calmly.
Zong Li had no choice but to tell Lu Bairen about the situation in the village. Lu Bairen had a better idea in his mind. Life in the village was not easy, and going into the mountains was just one way out.
Lu Boyuan will cause trouble for Lu Shiyi. If the villagers are not rescued, the farm will not be safe.
