I put the box under our bed frame and then sat on the bed. Yanling also put the snacks on the bed and then sat down with me.

We had barely sat down when someone came into our private room. It was a man wearing a white shirt—or rather, a white shirt that had turned yellowish from wearing it so much—and his hair was a mess, shiny with oil. He looked every bit the greasy middle-aged man.

Chapter Twenty-Seven: Ignoring

Seeing him like this, I really couldn't bear to look at him. But since I had to stay in a private room for a day and a night, I had no choice but to force an awkward smile. However, it seemed that he ignored me completely. Instead, his eyes were fixed on Yanling, and he had an extremely lewd smile on his face, just like the legendary pervert.

Yanling seemed a little scared and shrank closer to me. His lewd appearance was extremely disgusting. I reached out and put my hand on Yanling's shoulder, just like that, holding her and letting her lie in my arms.

Upon seeing this, the greasy man picked his nose, snorted coldly, casually tossed his suitcase aside, stared at the train ticket for a long time, and then slowly walked towards the bunk bed opposite us.

Just as the greasy man walked past, someone else came to the door. This time it was an acquaintance—the tall man whose wallet had been stolen by the pickpocket. Behind him was a woman wearing a baseball cap, the brim pulled down so low that only her nose and half her face were visible. But based on my years of observation of women, this woman was definitely very beautiful.

The tall man seemed to recognize me too, and waved to me, Yanling, with a smile.

Out of politeness, I responded with a nod and a smile.

The greasy man stared at the woman in the baseball cap behind them as soon as they came in, seemingly ignoring the tall man.

The woman behind him remained unmoved by the greasy man's burning gaze, but her eyes, hidden by the brim of his hat, were fixed on Yanling.

For some reason, Yanling was also staring blankly at the woman. I didn't understand why, and just assumed it was a contest between the two women.

After all, this kind of thing happens all the time. Whenever a beautiful woman sees another woman who looks similar to her, she will have this kind of comparison in her mind, comparing her figure, hairstyle, makeup, bag, and so on.

I could only smile wryly and rub my nose, then secretly resolved that I must be careful not to look at that woman even once on the way, or I might get into trouble.

The middle-aged man seemed to have noticed something as well. He narrowed his eyes slightly, glanced at Shui Yanling a few times, and then quickly looked away.

He turned around and gently slapped the woman on the head, saying, "How rude! What did I teach you?"

The woman finally looked away, adjusted the brim of her hat, and remained silent.

Yanling also withdrew her gaze at the same time, and continued to lie in my arms. She secretly pinched my waist, which made me wince in pain. I didn't even know what I had done wrong. Honestly, I didn't even glance at that woman.

Seeing this, the tall man smiled and said, "I'm sorry, young man, this is my niece. I haven't taught her well, she doesn't know any manners. Please don't take offense!"

"No, no, it's no offense, it's no offense," I forced out an awkward smile.

The tall man smiled, turned around to look at the greasy man who had been staring at the woman, and then stopped smiling.

"Have you seen enough? Go back to your own beds. The lower middle bunk is ours."

After the man spoke, the woman also looked at the greasy man, but her gaze was somewhat cold.

The greasy man looked away, gave the tall man in front of him an awkward smile, but his other hand was scratching himself in public.

Perhaps it was the tall man's imposing presence that made the greasy man seem somewhat frightened, and he had no choice but to quickly step aside.

The tall man strode over and sat down on the bed opposite me. The woman also came over, but instead of sitting with the man, she stood by the window and pulled her hat brim down even further.

Then the last person arrived. I had seen him before; he was the gaunt man holding the urn containing ashes.

The moment he entered, everyone's eyes turned to him. The gaunt man seemed flustered and stood there for a moment, unsure of what to do.

The tall man narrowed his eyes, not looking at the other man, but instead looking at the urn again and again, while the woman next to him glanced at it and then looked away.

Yanling got up from my arms and sat down beside me, glancing at the man a few times.

The most direct example was the greasy man, who looked disgusted the moment the skinny man entered.

"Pah, what bad luck!" The greasy man spat at the corner, then wobbled and flipped over to the top of the iron bunk bed.

After the greasy man climbed onto the bed, he muttered curses to himself, but no one could understand what he was saying.

The three beds opposite were already occupied. The thin man's bed was obviously on our side. The middle and lower bunks were for Yanling and me, and the thin man's bed was obviously the upper bunk on our side.

After we all looked away, the gaunt man didn't say anything to us. He went straight to the bed, placed the urn on it, and then slowly climbed onto the bed, clearly intending to keep the urn with him at all times.

Although I have no objection to this, after all, respect for the dead is paramount, the thought of him holding the urn for a whole day and night on this train still gives me the creeps.
