By the time we finished eating, it was already fully light outside, and Yanling was tidying up the table.
I thought about it for a moment, then took out my phone and dialed Lei Yu's number. I needed to go home this time. Although I didn't know what the outcome would be, I felt that I would find out some things after I got home.
Lei Yu is a good policeman and he trusts me. I don't know what might happen when I go home this time, so I have to call him to give him a heads-up, just in case something happens and I can ask for his help.
"Hey, Fang Shuang, what's wrong? What happened?" Lei Yu sounded very anxious on the other end. I felt a little helpless. His reaction was understandable, since the things I was involved in were all bad, and it could easily lead to another death.
"Don't be so nervous, nothing's wrong. I just have some clues, and I have to go back to my hometown right away."
The person on the other end paused for a moment before saying, "Okay, keep in touch. If you need anything, just let me know. I'll contact your local police, and they might be able to offer some assistance if needed."
"Okay, I understand."
The phone went dead. Hearing Lei Yu's reply, I felt a little relieved. After all, he's a good citizen of the country. It's always right to call the police when you're in trouble.
Next, I booked two train tickets back to my hometown on my phone. I was thinking that since Yanling was with me, booking plane tickets might be better, but because of a series of recent events, I lost my job and really don't have much money.
Lei Yu had originally found me a job, but because someone impersonated me to commit a crime, and because of what happened later, I never went back to work. I guess I've been fired now.
Sigh, the thought of this brings another wave of sadness. My ordinary life may just be gone forever.
After Yanling finished washing the dishes, we started packing our things. Actually, there wasn't much to pack; we just took the essential household items and a change of clothes.
Since we had bought tickets for the noon train, we didn't dawdle too much and got ready to leave after packing our things.
As I walked to the door and looked at everything familiar in the house, I felt a strange mix of emotions, after all, I didn't know if I would ever come back.
"Let's go," Shui Yanling called softly to me.
"Hmm," I glanced at her, then slowly closed the door.
I hadn't walked far from the door when I saw the smiling landlord.
"Hey, Fang Shuang, where are you taking your wife?" The landlady was a middle-aged woman in her forties, who was usually very nice to me.
Her son is about my age. I've seen him before, but he works in another city now. She sees that I'm just like her son, wandering alone in a foreign land, so she often asks me how I am doing.
I smiled and said, "Yes, Aunt Xu, I'm planning to take Yanling home to meet the elders in my family."
Yanling, standing beside her, also greeted, "Hello, Aunt Xu!"
"Yes, yes, good. Look how pretty this little girl is, you must treat her well," Aunt Xu said happily.
Then, seemingly a little disappointed, he said, "Sigh, I wonder when my husband will bring a wife home."
"Don't worry, Minghui is much more successful than me. He works for a big company, and I guarantee he'll bring you back a beautiful young lady soon."
"Mmm," Aunt Xu said, her eyes crinkling with laughter.
"Oh, right, I saw an old beggar outside just now, and he asked me to bring this to you."
As he spoke, he took a folded piece of paper out of his pocket and handed it to me.
An old beggar? I was instantly puzzled. Ever since we went to Northeast China together to find the shaman Changmen, the old beggar left a note and disappeared, saying he was going to fix his severed hand, and then there was no news of him.
I quickly took the note, but didn't open it. Aunt Xu was just an ordinary person; I couldn't involve her. The fewer people who knew about this, the better.
I smiled and nodded, then said to Aunt Xu, "Okay, Aunt Xu, it's almost time for the train, we have to go. I'll bring you some local specialties when I come back."
"Alright, you'd better hurry up, or you'll miss the train. Be careful on the road, keep your eyes open, and remember to protect your wife, or I won't let you off the hook."
Shui Yanling listened from the side, then covered her mouth and chuckled secretly.
I scratched my head and smiled as I agreed. After saying goodbye to Aunt Xu, we hailed a taxi on the roadside and headed towards the station.
Sitting in the car, I carefully opened the note. Yanling was watching beside me, but I didn't stop her. After all, she already knew so much, and it wouldn't be good to keep it from her.
The note only had four words written on it: "Beware of the Xuan Sect." I confirmed the handwriting; it was exactly the same as the note he left behind when he disappeared in Northeast China last time.
The Xuan Sect? What's that? I gripped the note tightly, remaining silent. It seemed some organization was watching me again. After a long while, a bitter smile finally appeared on my face. I'm really something now. First, there are imitators on the dark web, and now a mysterious organization is targeting me. Then I suddenly remembered that when I left the prison that day, Lei Yu said that an organization connected to the state was also watching me. It seems I'm quite a rare commodity now.
I didn't notice that when she saw those words, Shui Yanling's eyes turned icy cold in an instant, making it seem as if you were in an ice valley.
However, that look only flashed by for a moment. When I came back to my senses and looked at her, she had returned to that gentle and weak feeling, as if the sharp and piercing look in her eyes just now was just an illusion.
