Around noon the next day, the wind and snow stopped for a while, and we all filled our stomachs. We teased the two children for a while and then set off. The team obviously had a little more warmth because of the three new members.
After a day's rest, everyone's spirits have almost returned to their peak.
We first cleared the roadblocks, which were traps set by ourselves, before setting off.
The ground was still white, though faintly showing signs of melting. I felt noticeably colder than yesterday, and I couldn't help but tighten my clothes around me. Although I was completely transformed, I still felt the same as a normal person.
Qin Lan was holding the older girl's hand. Today's girl looked noticeably different from her slovenly appearance yesterday. Qin Lan had her hair tied up in two ponytails, looking quite pretty. Along the way, the uncles and sisters kept calling out to her sweetly, which really helped to bring the group closer together. Perhaps this is the advantage of being a child; children are generally simple-minded. In this treacherous desert island, bringing a little bit of pure white light to those already accustomed to darkness is always particularly attractive.
"Zhizi, at our current speed, how long will it take us to reach your tribe's settlement?" I asked Zhizi naturally.
"Brother Chen Fei, it's probably about two days away, not too far. It's just that there's no point in you going there. We don't have anything to eat or drink, so I'm afraid we can't be of much help to you." Zhizi answered me tactfully and hesitantly. She was also a perceptive woman, with a pretty face and a decent brain. Her brain worked, which was good.
"Zhizi, your settlement is our destination. We have come this far, and we can't give up halfway." I changed the subject and said, "Besides, one more person means one more strength. Don't you think that the Northeast has become a little bit confusing these days? Although I, Chen Fei, am not a big shot, I will not do anything to deceive the world and steal fame. Maybe we can help you solve the problem, right?" I expressed my thoughts to her sincerely.
"Yes, yes, Zhizi, don't worry, Brother Chen Fei is not an ordinary person." Then some people jumped out to respond.
Qin Lan put her arm around Zhizi's shoulders and said, "Don't worry, Zhizi. Chen Fei isn't one of those unreliable people." She winked at me with a hint of pride. Look how proud she is. Being able to comfort a woman is truly remarkable. Well, it's quite remarkable. It's just too much for a grown man like me to do.
"Zhizi, stop wasting time. I, Dafei, will guarantee you. You will be fine if you follow us." Brother Dafei also made a bold statement without giving in.
A myriad of emotions welled up in my heart. We are not born bad people, we are just forced to change by the environment.
There was constant talking and laughing along the way, and the atmosphere was far different from the silence at the beginning of the journey.
Everything was fine at the beginning, but accidents always happen when we are not prepared.
That night, the familiar whistle sounded quietly, and I became extremely alert.
The leaves rustled, and I opened my hands in front of everyone to block their advance. I turned around and made a "hush" gesture to everyone, indicating that they must not act rashly.
Qin Lan and several brothers consciously acted as protectors of women and children. They formed a circle between the mother and daughter at lightning speed and protected them tightly inside.
Looking at this situation, I nodded to Qin Lan with satisfaction.
"Why are you playing so much nonsense, sir? Just take it out for a walk, whether it's a mule or a horse?" I shouted. Listening from all directions, I could tell the whistles were coming from a single location, and there weren't many whistles coming from anywhere. This meant the enemy wasn't outnumbered. Given our strength, we had a clear chance of victory.
Thinking of myself, Chen Fei, when I was a special forces soldier, I encountered countless wild beasts and fought against them with my bare hands. When I thought of this, the blood that was engraved deep in my body began to boil again.
I got into position, rubbing my hands in anticipation, eager to give it a try.
The whistle sounded incessantly, rising from high pitch to low and eerie, making the listeners feel uneasy. As it came closer and closer, I thought, it was time for it to appear.
My heart skipped a beat. It was indeed a tiger. But something was off, and I couldn't quite put my finger on what. Around its neck hung a red string, and attached to it was a wooden whistle that whistled continuously. Strange, a whistle that could sound without blowing. It was truly unheard of. But the world is vast, and there are always wonders. There are always people better than you. And here I was, a person with limited vision, trapped on this island. My mood darkened slightly, and as I realized this, I quickly adjusted my mind to face the tiger before me.
Before I could launch an attack, Zhizi, protected by layers of protection, suddenly rushed out like a madman. "It's it! It's it! It killed my husband!" The listener couldn't help but burst into tears. Fortunately, her brothers were in a hurry to stop her. Qin Lan was even more perceptive and swung a diagonal blow to the back of the man's neck, knocking him unconscious. She quickly took the child from Zhizi's arms. It was a last resort. At this critical moment, you can't distract yourself from caring for someone who is out of control. Time is life.
In an instant, the tiger pounced on me, and I didn't have time to take out my rifle to kill it. What's even more strange is that you all think too highly of me, Qin Fei. You all stood on Zhizi's side to look after them, leaving me alone to fight the tiger. I really had a hundred thousand "alpaca horses" running through my heart.
