Chapter 41

Chapter 41

As we were finishing our barbecue, it was time to pay the bill and leave, but then it started to rain.

When Yu Xia and Gu Yubai came out, they never expected it to rain, so they didn't bring any umbrellas.

The rain came without warning. One second it was still hot and steamy, and the next second it was like thunder and lightning arguing. Suddenly, with a whoosh, raindrops the size of beans hit the shed like drums, thump thump thump.

"It's raining." The spot where they were sitting was on the outside, and raindrops fell down the canopy, dripping to their feet and wetting their trouser legs.

Yu Xia looked at the shed and quickly moved her bag a little further inside.

The rain came down suddenly and fiercely, giving no one any time to react. It's likely that no one present expected the rain to come. Customers waiting for their barbecue at the stall were suddenly hit head-on by the rain, getting soaked instantly. They quickly put their hands on their heads and looked for shelter.

The owner hurriedly set up the awning and ran over from the barbecue stall, beckoning people to come inside: "It's raining, it's raining, everyone come inside and don't get wet."

The owner's shop is small, about ten square meters, with only a table, a few stools, and a freezer containing barbecue ingredients and some drinks.

Only after finding a place for guests to stay did I have time to tidy myself up.

The owner was very kind; he brought over some clean towels and asked everyone to wipe themselves down, and also turned on the fan.

Fortunately, it's summer, so even if you get caught in the rain, you won't catch a cold from the fan.

The boss then brought over a few more benches from the back so everyone could sit and rest for a bit.

Yu Xia and Gu Yubai followed the crowd in; only the guests from the three tables from before remained in the tent.

The owner moved the tables that were on the outside of the shed to the inside to prevent them from getting wet.

He moved the leftover barbecue from the other customers outside into the shop and placed it on the only table. "Everyone can eat it first, and each person can share what belongs to whom."

"The rest of the barbecue will be ready soon, please wait a little longer." After saying that, he rushed out again.

"The summer rain just comes so suddenly, doesn't it?" The customers inside the shop started chatting as they looked at the rain outside.

"Yes, it was fine just now, but suddenly it started raining and soaked me."

"That's right, I was eating meat when they poured a mouthful of water into my mouth."

"Consider it a free hair wash, it even saves water, hahaha," said a bald guy.

"Brother, this hair of yours is so easy to wash, isn't it?" said a girl with long hair.

"That's true. For young girls like you, washing your hair is such a hassle. I see my sister taking an hour to wash her hair. There's all sorts of shampoo, conditioner, and all that other stuff. I don't even know what to say. After that, she has to apply some kind of little bottle of something called 'essence.' It's so complicated."

Everyone burst into laughter.

Gathering in the same space, it seems that no special relationship is needed; acquaintances and strangers alike naturally blend together.

Yu Xia took a clean towel from the shop owner, keeping one for herself and handing the other to Gu Yubai.

"Mr. Gu, are you going back now? Or wait a while?" Yu Xia glanced at Gu Yubai's trouser legs, which were soaked by the rain.

I think he must find it a bit hard to stand, since he always presents himself neatly and properly, even his collar is perfectly straight, and he always appears in front of everyone with a dignified and upright appearance.

He's soaked from the rain and looks a bit disheveled; he must be feeling quite unwell.

Just as Yu Xia was mentally planning to order takeout and have an umbrella delivered, Gu Yubai took the towel and said, "No need, wait until the rain stops before you leave."

"Oh, okay." Yu Xia nodded.

Yu Xia glanced at the rain outside and thought that it probably wouldn't stop anytime soon.

"Boss, two bottles of beer, please." A man in a vest called out to the boss outside.

"Okay! Take it yourself!" the shopkeeper replied.

He took two bottles of beer from the freezer, walked back to the bench, opened the bottles, and asked the person next to him, "Want to have a drink together?"

The man next to him didn't stand on ceremony and handed him a disposable cup: "Come on, pour some. How can we not drink when it's raining?"

"Rongcheng is really different from Nancheng. When I came from Nancheng, I could feel the dampness here."

"Huh? You're from Nancheng?" Yu Xia, who was wiping her clothes with a towel, asked reflexively upon hearing this.

"Huh? You're from Nancheng too?" The woman in the vest seemed a little surprised.

“Yes,” Yu Xia was clearly pleasantly surprised to meet a fellow townsman, feeling an immediate sense of closeness. She then asked, “Where in Nancheng are you from?”

The man gave the name of the place.

Yu Xia understood: "I know this place; the scenery here is very famous."

"Are you also from the south of the city?" the man asked.

“No, I came from Beicheng,” Yu Xia said.

"Beicheng? Do you study in Beicheng?" he asked.

“No, I didn’t study in Beicheng, I worked in Beicheng,” Yu Xia replied.

"What a coincidence, I also work in Beicheng," the man in the vest said with surprise. Then he quickly asked, "How long have you been in Beicheng?"

"About six months, I came in January."

“I’ve been here a little longer than you; I’ve been in Beicheng for over a year,” the man in the vest said with a smile.

As the two chatted more and more, and because they happened to be from the same hometown, they became noticeably warmer and closer together, which displeased Gu Yubai.

He became even more displeased when he noticed that the man in the vest was also quite good-looking.

The other person had very fair skin, round, curved eyes, and looked a little younger than them. They were very young, loved to laugh, and were also very outgoing.

In such a short time, the two of them were almost touching.

Gu Yubai frowned as he watched the two gradually close in distance.

Although I know that Yu Xia is an outgoing and lively person who can easily get along with others. After all, I can tell from the fact that we became online friends.

But when Yu Xia really showed her kindness and friendliness, Gu Yubai was a little annoyed.

Sometimes you don't need to be this good at socializing.

I don't want everyone to know how good Yu Xia is.

I don't want her to be able to chat with everyone.

Gu Yubai was very unhappy.

He became even more irritated when he saw the smiling face of the man in the vest.

Laugh! What are you laughing at! Who are you smiling at all day? Do you even know me?

Gu Yubai could no longer hear their conversation.

As the two were getting more and more enthusiastic in their conversation, Gu Yubai abruptly sat down on the bench between them, successfully using his body to become a barrier between them, preventing them from getting any closer.

I'll make you laugh.

Gu Yubai sat between the two men as steady as a mountain, seemingly oblivious to the fact that the two men were both stunned at the same moment.

Yu Xia was taken aback, unsure of his intentions, and whispered, "President Gu?"

What's wrong? You seem to be throwing a tantrum.

Who upset him?

"Hmm." Gu Yubai remained expressionless, continuing to wipe his pants with a towel, as if he wasn't the one who had suddenly appeared between others. He was very calm and at ease, without any embarrassment.

This is Gu Yubai; he does everything with a straight face, as if it's his due.

The man in the vest next to him, however, seemed completely oblivious to Gu Yubai's hidden hostility, and cheerfully asked, "And who is this gentleman...?"

Yu Xia replied, "He's my boss."

"Oh, boss," he picked up another bottle of beer from the ground, poured him a glass, and asked familiarly, "Hey bro, wanna have a drink?"

He doesn't—

Before Yu Xia could finish speaking, Gu Yubai had already taken the glass of wine from his hand and drunk it all in one gulp: "Thank you."

Yu Xia: "..."

The man in the vest was a little stunned, but he quickly recovered and poured him another glass: "Brother, you're awesome! Come on, have another one."

Gu Yubai didn't refuse and let him pour him another glass.

"Since you're from the south, why are you working in the north?" he asked Yu Xia.

"I like it, and you can't stay in one place forever; you have to go out and explore more," Yu Xia said.

Upon hearing Yu Xia's answer, Gu Yubai raised an eyebrow slightly.

People can't stay in one place forever; they have to go out and explore. That was exactly what he said to Yu Xia earlier, and now Yu Xia is using that same phrase to answer someone else.

Can.

Gu Yubai felt better again and slowly drank the wine in his glass.

"I see. So, are you here on a business trip?" the man asked.

"Yes, that's right, I'm here on a business trip."

When are you going back?

"The day after tomorrow." That was Gu Yubai's reply.

He finished the drink in his glass and slammed it on the table, intending to make a domineering gesture to intimidate the other party and signal the end of the matter. However, because the disposable glass, which had no liquid to hold, was too light, it was blown over by the wind from the fan as soon as he placed it on the table.

Gu Yubai: "..."

"Oh, that's a bit of a shame. I won't be back for another three or four days, otherwise we could have traveled together." The man in the vest, oblivious to his actions, said with some regret.

Who wants to travel with you?

Gu Yubai straightened the cup again, placed his hand on it to make it stand upright, and then swept his cold, somewhat sharp gaze at the other person.

The other person, puzzled by his gaze, looked down to the empty glass in his hand and understood, assuming he wanted more wine. So, he picked up the bottle from the floor and asked, "Would you like some more?"

Gu Yubai: "..."

Gu Yubai closed his eyes, looked away, and rejected the fool's suggestion, saying, "No need."

"Oh, oh, oh." The other person silently put the bottle down again.

At this moment, the man in the vest also felt a little embarrassed. Just as he was about to say something, Gu Yubai noticed his intention and spoke first: "The rain has stopped."

Um?

The people in the shop looked outside and realized that the rain had stopped sometime earlier.

"Hey, it's really stopped." - Someone inside.

Summer rain is like that; it comes quickly and goes quickly.

After saying this, Gu Yubai glanced at Yu Xia.

Yu Xia quickly understood what those words meant.

The rain has stopped; it's time to go.

So she stood up with Gu Yubai and said goodbye to the fellow villager: "Then we'll be going now."

"Leaving so soon?" The person clearly wanted to persuade them to stay a little longer.

Gu Yubai walked impatiently and had already reached the store entrance.

"Okay, have fun." Yu Xia waved to them.

"Okay," the man in the vest said with a smile, though he was a little reluctant. "There will be other opportunities in the future." He waved to Yu Xia and said, "See you next time."

"See you again someday."

Upon hearing this, Gu Yubai sped up even more.

What else is there to see?

So annoying.
