Chapter 12 Recovery

"Your father has taken them up the mountain to chop firewood. He said he wanted to fill up your kitchen so you can use it during the winter. Your bed has been made today and has been put inside. When you're better, go and see it for yourself."

"Mom, when are we going to town to buy things?" She hadn't been to the market here for a long time.

Zhou looked at her and said, "Originally, I was planning to go tomorrow, but you're not fully recovered yet, so I'm a little worried. We have to get up early to go to town, so why not wait two days?"

Chunxiao didn't want to wait another two days. "Mom, we can't let Aunt Fang wait forever. Let's go tomorrow. I've already said I'm fine."

Zhou looked at her and said, "Let me take a look. If you are okay tonight, we will go tomorrow."

"Grandma, are you going to town tomorrow? I want to go too." Pan'er hugged Zhou's legs, "I want to go with you."

Zhou pushed her away and said, "I knew you guys wanted to join in the fun. We're going to town tomorrow to buy a lot of things, so we won't have time to watch over you. Just stay home and wait for us to come back."

Pan'er closed her eyes and was about to speak, but Zhang slapped her on the butt, "Cry for a moment, and see if I don't hit you!"

This trick really worked, and the little girl stopped crying immediately.

"Your grandma and the others are on business, so they don't have time to look after you. I'll take you there again when I have the chance before the New Year. Don't make a fuss." After hearing what Zhang said, the two little girls fell silent. Seeing that nothing happened here, Zhou returned to the east courtyard.

After lunch, Zhou came over and helped Zhang boil water so Chunxiao could take a nice bath inside. Since the weather was nice, they let the two children take a bath as well. Zhang took the clothes to the river to wash.

Chunxiao felt a little uncomfortable living a life of having everything provided for her at home. She wanted to wash her clothes herself, but Zhang said she was not well yet and left with the basin.

Mrs. Zhou shook her head and laughed, "Why, are you not used to having your sister-in-law serve you? You are always so cautious, it makes mother uncomfortable to watch you."

"Mom, if I accepted it with a clear conscience, you would be really uncomfortable. You forget that I am not an unmarried girl anymore."

"Okay, okay, okay, you're right. I can't argue with you."

"Mom, I want to go to the end of the village."

Zhou frowned. "You're just getting better. Don't be exposed to the wind. Go tomorrow. When you come back from town tomorrow, your things will be almost settled. You'll live there every day in the future. Are you afraid of not seeing it? Don't go today."

Chunxiao thought about it and it made sense.

During dinner in the evening, Zhou talked about going to town tomorrow. The family had saved up a lot of eggs to sell, and some dried radishes could also be sold. The most important thing was to buy things for Chunxiao. Yan Dashan was going to go with them, and she needed a man to help carry things.

The younger ones had already been warned by their mother, so when they heard about going to the town they did not join in the fun.

"Mom, can you take the mountain? Do you want me to go with you?"

Zhou waved her hand and said, "No need. We'll just buy the important things. We won't buy anything big. The big things are just an iron pot and a mattress. The rest are enough for Chunxiao and I to carry in a backpack." Zhou didn't want her daughter-in-law to see her spending money, so Dashan didn't care. She would remind him when the time comes and he wouldn't say anything.

Tian nodded and said nothing more.

"When you go out, please keep an eye on your money and keep it safe so that it won't be stolen by pickpockets," Yan Bingfa reminded.

This pickpocket is indeed a specialty of the times. He has his own foothold in both ancient and modern times. He is like a cockroach. It is so annoying, but you can't get rid of him.

Chun Xiao took a bath during the day and dried her quilt in the sun, so she slept soundly that night. The next day, just as the sky was getting light, she got up energetically. Not wanting to wake the two little ones, she dressed and put on her shoes quietly and went straight to the east courtyard. Zhou and Yan Dashan were already up.

After washing up, Yan Dashan shouldered his backpack filled with dried radishes and eggs. Zhou and Chunxiao each carried an empty basket and left. They had to meet up with Aunt Fang at the village entrance. Yanjia Village was neither far nor too close to Sanye Town; if they walked quickly, they'd be there in about an hour. Chunxiao had gone to the market with Zhou before, as a girl, but not often. Thinking about it now, it felt like a lifetime ago.

The few of them successfully met Aunt Fang and Du Juan at the entrance of the village.

"Why did Dashan come along?"

"Aunt, let's go buy some things for my sister. My mother was afraid that she couldn't carry it all by herself, so she asked me to come along and help."

"Yes, yes." Fang smiled. "I heard that the houses at the end of your village have been cleaned up. When I have time, I will go and take a look." The few of them talked as they walked.

"What's so good about it? It's just a thatched house. It's not even as nice as our own. It doesn't have anything we want. Otherwise, there's no need to rush to buy it." Zhou did not welcome other people's onlookers.

"It's definitely a little worse at first, but it will get better as you live here." She looked at Chunxiao, "I have two unused jars at my house. I'll give them to you to pickle some vegetables or something."

"Thank you, Aunt Fang!" She was short of everything at the moment, and the jar was the best.

"I appreciate your kindness, but you should keep the jar for future use so you don't run out of pickles and have to buy more. If Chunxiao needs some, we can just buy a few."

"Why are you being so polite to me? I have no regrets about giving it away. You don't have to worry about me asking you for it back."

"Look at what you said, is that what I meant?" Zhou laughed helplessly, "In the blink of an eye, our children have grown up so fast, and we are old too."
