The three Yan family members sat at Zhou's house for a while, then left without waiting for Zhou Hongzhi to return. Before leaving, they announced they would come back the next day. If Chunxiao got into trouble again during this period, they would definitely come and cause a scene. They would make it difficult for anyone who made things difficult for them.
When Xu saw the people leave, she spat at the door, "What kind of people are you? You're showing off by relying on your numbers." She then drove away the people watching the fun at the door, "What are you looking at? There's nothing interesting to see."
Zhou Xingcai sat on the stool with a worried look on his face. "Let Hongzhi talk to Chunxiao about this matter when he comes back. I don't think the Yan family will let it go if we don't handle it well."
"What's there to say? She already knows everything. Now, whether she agrees or not, the Xu family marriage is already finalized. Making a fuss will only hurt both sides."
Zhou Xing gave Xu a cold look. "Women are always short-sighted. Stay out of this matter. Just do as I say." He glanced at the closed door again. "Don't try to provoke her on your own initiative again. If she jumps into the river again, you won't be able to explain yourself even if you give her ten mouths."
"Humph! If you tell her she's useless, she'll just cry, make a scene, and even threaten to hang herself."
"You can't just say less."
Chunxiao was lying in bed listening to the couple's conversation outside the room. She felt that all her efforts over the years were a joke and that all her sincerity had been wasted. She really wanted to return to her dream world.
That day and night, she had a long dream. Perhaps, taking pity on her fate, God allowed her to live a different life in her dream. It was a modern, civilized society, far more advanced than her current one. There, she was born into a wealthy family, taught to read and write from a young age. In that world, men and women were equal, and the world boasted a wealth of technological advancements. As her parents' only child, she was pampered from childhood. Last year in her dream, she had been admitted to the university of her choice and made many friends. She and her friends signed up for an outdoor survival summer camp, but while swimming in the wild, she developed a leg cramp. When she woke up, she had become the Yan Chunxiao she is today.
This dream was so real that she couldn't tell which was the real her. Zhouzhuang dreaming of a butterfly, the butterfly dreaming of Zhouzhuang, nothing more than that. If the dream was real, then she had traveled through time, from a modern person to an ancient one. If the present was real, then everything in the dream was too unbelievable. She really hoped that everything was just a dream, and when she woke up, she would be free from this miserable life.
Unfortunately, when she woke up, she still saw the thatched roof. She looked around this strange yet familiar room. This was indeed the home she and her husband had lived in for four years. There was a wardrobe, a desk under the window by the door, and a pile of her husband's books on the desk. But for some reason, she didn't have the same sense of belonging here as before. She looked around the room carefully. It could only be described as familiar yet strange.
She lay in bed with her eyes open, staring at the ceiling, wishing she could poke a hole in it. Not long after, she heard a commotion outside, and she heard the voice of her so-called husband: Zhou Hongzhi is back!
The three of them were probably discussing something, their voices filled with indescribable excitement, which could be heard even through the door. Then she heard her father-in-law keep saying "That's great, that's great."
After a while, the door opened and Zhou Hongzhi came in.
"Chunxiao, mother told me that you woke up. How are you? Are you feeling better?" A man walked to the bedside and saw that she had her eyes open. "Why were you so stupid to jump into the water without saying a word?" The man wanted to pull her hand, but she avoided him silently.
Yan Chunxiao looked at the man in front of her, feeling indescribably awkward. What had happened? In the past, whenever her husband was not at home, she would always be at home hoping that he would come back soon, and she loved him so much. Now that her husband was right in front of her, she didn't have any of the love she had before. Could it be that she was really heartbroken? She looked at the handsome man in front of her, "Husband, I'm fine."
Seeing her calm tone, Zhou Hongzhi felt relieved. "I'm glad you're alright. You're such a fool. I never mentioned divorce from the beginning. How could you have listened to me? You said that if you really jumped to your death, our family's reputation would be ruined."
Ha! It seems that she was worried that her death would ruin her family's reputation, not that she was truly worried about her as a person. Her heart was colder than ever before.
"I'm here to tell you some good news." Zhou Hongzhi smiled at her. "I went to the Xu family today, and after much persuasion, they agreed that I don't have to divorce you. However, the Xu family still has status, so you can continue to stay in the Zhou family, but your status will change. From now on, you will be our concubine." Seeing Chunxiao's expression unchanged on the bed, his originally uneasy mood relaxed. "Chunxiao, I know you are a sensible person. In fact, there is not much difference between being a wife and a concubine. From now on, you will live with my parents in Zhoujia Village and have nothing to do with that Miss Xu. Life will continue as before."
Chunxiao sneered and looked at him. She really wanted to applaud this man's shamelessness. From wife to concubine, staying in her hometown to serve her parents-in-law, this was his good news. She didn't have the strength at the moment. If she had the strength, she really wanted to slap the man in front of her. He was so shameless and hypocritical.
"I know you must be feeling a little uncomfortable, but think about it, even if you endure some grievances, you will still be the daughter-in-law of our Zhou family when you leave. This is the best solution at the moment."
"You turned me from a wife into a concubine, and now you want me to be grateful to you?" Chun Xiao couldn't stand it anymore and mocked her.
Zhou Hongzhi was startled. This was the first time Chunxiao had spoken to him with such sarcasm. He looked at the person on the bed in surprise. "Chunxiao, how can you speak like that and betray my kindness? You know I've lost face today and gone to the Xu family to deal with your matter. Do you really want me to divorce you?" He saw that the person on the bed was silent and thought she was just reflecting on herself. "I know you've been wronged, but what's the point of being wronged now? When I, your husband, become successful one day, all these grievances will become a good life in the future. You will be grateful then. You should understand my difficulties."
