Chunxiao also knew this. There were no surveillance cameras here. Even if you caught someone afterward, if they denied it, you had no recourse. You had to catch them in the act. There really was no good way to get justice in this matter. "Dad, the headmaster will check it out later. Let's ask Uncle Yan Wu to fix the door handle first. I checked, the lock is fine, only the door handle."
"I'll ask your second brother to go find someone right now."
Not long after Yan Dahe left, Yan Dashan came with the village head. Following them were three children and many villagers. They all came to join in the fun because they heard that Chunxiao's house had been robbed.
As soon as the headman entered the yard, he first looked at the smashed door lock. Then he was accompanied by Yan Bingfa and his son to take a look around. Finally, Zhou counted the things that were lost to him in detail.
The villagers outside the yard kept whispering to each other during the whole process. They rarely came to this end of the village, but they didn't expect that this humble, dilapidated house had lost so many things. They didn't know which damn thief did it. They hated thieves so much.
"Village head, you have to stand up for Chunxiao. She's settled in our village and is considered a respectable villager. Now everything has been stolen in broad daylight, even her clothes and quilts. They're killing her." Zhou had originally intended to sound pathetic, hoping the villagers would sympathize and offer help, but who knew she would actually burst into tears. Chunxiao wanted to persuade her, but seeing so many people around, she let Zhou have her way.
"Village head, we're not the only family in this village that's lost things. We're just unlucky. We live far away, so we've been targeted. This thief will only get bolder after tasting the sweetness. Who knows if he'll steal from other families one day? Even the tiger can take a nap. Who can guarantee that their things won't be lost? You've got to be careful about this."
When the people watching the excitement heard this, they thought it made a lot of sense. It would be different if the matter happened to them.
"Village head, Zhou Mainiang is right. We need to investigate thoroughly. The New Year is almost here. Who can rest easy if we don't catch this thief?"
"It's the village head. Some time ago, our chickens were lost, and we still haven't found who stole them. I'm afraid this village will never be at peace."
"Village head, this is a serious matter, we must pay attention to it."
The villagers were talking at once, and the quarrels with the head of the village left and right gave Yan Qinghua a headache. He was also feeling miserable. The man had run away, and he hadn't caught him. Where could he go to find him? The best way was for each family to be careful.
He frowned and looked at the Zhou family. "This is indeed no small matter, but to catch a thief you have to take the dirty tricks. Now that everyone has escaped, everyone should be alert. Spread the word in the village that there are thieves around recently, so remember to leave someone behind when you go out."
"Are we just going to let this go?" Zhou ignored Yan Bingfa's tugging and rushed to the village head. "If these things are lost, then they're lost. We just bought these things, but they cost us a lot of money."
Yan Qinghua was frightened by her actions and took a step back. "What else can I do? I'll give you an explanation once I catch the thief, but until I catch him, you can only blame yourself for your bad luck. Do you really want me to compensate you?"
"No, Li Zheng, that's not what I meant. I was just anxious. Since I've reported this to you, please keep a record of it. It will help you keep an eye on it."
Men are always tactful when it comes to speaking. The village head shook his sleeves and suppressed his anger. The other party was also a victim, so he could still understand. "Hurry up and clean up. I know about this." He looked at the villagers gathered outside and said, "You all heard what I just said. Go back and be careful. Don't let the thieves take advantage of the opportunity."
The village head glanced at the people in the yard and felt that it would be boring to stay any longer, so he comforted the Zhou family with a few words and went back.
The head of the village left and the villagers dispersed as well.
Uncle Yan Wu had just arrived, but because there were many people gathered at the edge of the yard and they were talking inside, he didn't squeeze in. Now that everyone had left, he and Dahe came in and said, "Your family has had bad luck today. You should leave someone to watch over you when you go out next time."
"Ah!" Yan Bingfa sighed, "Who could have imagined something like this would happen? Hurry up and check that door to see if it can be repaired. Make sure it's more secure."
Uncle Yan looked at the door handle and said, "It can be fixed, but it's a bit troublesome. I need to remove the door panel and carry it to my house. It won't work here."
"How long will it take?" asked Dahe.
"Your two doors have four door handles. Carry them over now. The door handle should be ready before dark. If you're late, it will be tomorrow."
When several people heard this, they hurried over to help remove the door panels. Dahe and Dashan each took down one panel of the gate and followed Uncle Yan Wu.
The children knew that something had happened at home and the adults were very upset, so they were sensible and didn't go anywhere near them, but hid aside.
As soon as the two brothers left, Tian came with Fang.
"What's going on? I heard Chunxiao was robbed." Fang looked at the empty gate. "I just ran into the village head on the road. Have you informed him?"
Chunxiao came into the room and brought her a stool.
"Mom, my sister-in-law wanted to come and see, but I asked her to stay at home because I thought there was a thief." Tian didn't go into the house to see, and she didn't know what the situation was inside or how much the loss was, but she knew that Chunxiao should have some money in her hands recently, so she was very worried.
"Now we have to leave someone behind. We've been robbed, haven't we? They even took your little sister's quilt and mattress, and there's so much food. The bastard even took your new underwear. I didn't dare to say anything because there were so many people around. You said the thief must be a man. What kind of clothes could he wear? It's a waste of the fine cotton material."
