Zhou and the children returned home more than half an hour after they arrived home. When they came back, the house became very lively and noisy.
"If I hadn't had to watch over them, I wouldn't have wanted to ride the oxcart. I've seen so few people riding oxcarts since they all walk." Zhou rubbed her arm. "Eleven drives the cart really fast, but I'm almost falling apart. I have to watch over them the whole way so they don't get thrown off the cart. Next time I go to town, I won't be following these kids."
"Grandma, I told you we were sitting well. It's you who's worried. You can't blame us. We'll go again next time."
"Go, go, serve the food." Zhou pushed the children aside. "You're talking too much, it's rude. Shuwen, put your books away."
Tian's meal had been prepared long ago and was still hot in the pot, waiting for everyone to gather and start eating.
The whole family gathered together to drink dumpling soup.
"I think my sister-in-law is willing to give up now. This dumpling soup not only has a lot of dumplings, but also meat." Dahe drank the noodle soup. "We have been living as if we had never been separated. We come over to eat from time to time. I will ask Zhang Lan to cook a table tomorrow, and you can come to my room to eat."
"You're only saying that now that you're eating. If you don't want to eat for free all the time, just call us when it's ready."
"Mom, we bought some meat today and will eat it at our place tomorrow," Zhang said.
"Mom was just kidding. We're all family. We're not starving, so why should we divide it between you and me?" Tian picked up two pickles. "It's fun to eat together occasionally, and we don't mind."
Chunxiao looked at the family and thought that this was the true portrayal of a harmonious family bringing prosperity.
After dinner, Chunxiao wanted to go back. She was in a hurry to plant her orange saplings, and the little ones wanted to follow her. Dashan reminded her to remember to start trying to burn wood when she got back, and he would take Dahe up the mountain to cut some more tomorrow.
As a result, when she and Zhou took the child to the end of the village, they found that the fence gate of the house was wide open.
The two men immediately felt something was wrong. When they entered the yard, they found that the locks of the main gate and the stove door had been smashed and could be opened with a push.
"Oh my God, there's a thief in the house." Zhou rushed into the house in a hurry. Chunxiao was a little stunned. After following her in, she found that the bedroom was in a mess. The quilt and mattress on the bed were gone, and there were several holes on the floor and walls.
"Shufeng, go back quickly and tell your grandfather and the others to come over. Shuwen, go find your father and ask him to get the village head over and tell him that your aunt's house was robbed."
The children were standing there stupidly, but when they heard what Zhou said, they ran away, and Shuduo followed them.
"Xiaoqi, take Duo'er to the intersection and watch. If anyone comes, notify us."
Seeing Chunxiao's bewildered face, Zhou thought she was frightened and she herself was a little confused when encountering such a thing.
After the children left, she pulled Chunxiao's arm and said, "There are several holes on the ground. The thief is looking for money. Check quickly to see if your money has been taken." If it was taken, there would be no way to survive.
Both of them were worried. Chunxiao quickly went to where the money was buried and dug it open to take a look. He breathed a sigh of relief. Fortunately, "Mom, the box is still there."
Zhou also breathed a sigh of relief. As long as the money wasn't stolen, it would be fine. "Don't just look at the box. Take it out and open it to check clearly. This damn thief must have gone crazy because of poverty. He even took away the quilt."
Chunxiao took out the box, opened it and took a look. The money was indeed there. Today was a dangerous day. If the thief was lucky enough to dig there, he would really lose everything. This was the first time she encountered such a thing.
The two of them put the box away and carefully counted what was missing from the house. The hundred pounds of flour and several dozen pounds of rice in the cupboard were gone, along with the peanuts she'd bought earlier. She'd worn a new coat when she went out today, and the cupboard was filled with old cotton-padded clothes, which no one had taken. Her new underwear was missing, and she went to the kitchen to check; the two pickled rabbits and chicken hanging there were gone, too. That was all she had for now.
The main reason was that she hadn't bought anything else. Otherwise, with the other party's attitude, anything useful would have to be taken away.
Fortunately, she went to the market today and there was no charcoal burning at home, not even in the utility room. Otherwise, if her charcoal was discovered, they might target her in the future.
Chunxiao was about to pack up, but Zhou stopped her, "Don't pack up yet. Wait until the village head comes and takes a look. If there's a theft in the village, he'll know about it."
The two of them moved a stool and sat in the yard, and Zhou was still cursing.
Not long after, Yan Qi came running over and said, "Grandma, my dad and the others are here."
Yan Bingfa and Yan Dahe came over and walked around the house. "This thief is so bold. He dared to steal in broad daylight. He must have known that no one was home. It must have been done by someone from the village."
Yan Dahe clenched his fists and said, "If I knew this, I would break his legs."
"What was lost?" Yan Bingfa looked anxious.
Zhou then went through the inventory of lost items and said, "Chunxiao hid the money well, the money is not lost."
When they heard this, they couldn't help but breathe a sigh of relief, but they were still angry in their hearts, because what they just talked about cost several taels of silver.
"What should we do about this?" Zhou looked at Yan Bingfa with no idea in mind.
Yan Bingfa sighed, "This village is peaceful, but it's still too remote. Look, this guy broke down the door and moved things, and the villagers may not even know about it. I think it's hard to find him, so this matter will probably be left unresolved."
"Just give this thing away for free!" Zhou raised her voice, feeling very dissatisfied.
"Let's wait until the village head comes. It's probably an unsolved case. Some time ago, a chicken was lost from someone's home, but the case was left unresolved unless the thief is caught on the spot." Yan Bingfa sighed. The villagers considered themselves unlucky when they encountered thieves.
