The same honest-sounding voice, which had been there at the beginning, loudly proclaimed, "I'm going to go and see!"
Jin Yulou set up a stall at the entrance to advertise cheap kitchen jobs. A kind-hearted man pushed through the crowd to the stall and loudly read the job posting aloud.
"The wages are calculated on a daily basis, and the more you work, the more you earn..."
Gu Yaoniang looked at the commotion on the first floor and chuckled, "These Xu brothers are really something, always so capable. How much silver did they give this time?"
Xu Erlang is now quite adept at being a shill for Jin Yulou.
I wonder if the onlookers downstairs will give me away and reveal my secret.
Bizhu covered her mouth and laughed, "This time we didn't find him. He came of his own accord. He wasn't a plant."
Gu Yaoniang found it rather novel and then looked down.
Xu Erlang asked in a drawn-out tone, "What is an external meeting?"
The young waiter sitting at the eight-immortal table by the entrance was racking his brains, unsure how to introduce the "waihui" service from the cheap kitchen. Xu Erlang's question was like a pillow delivered to a sleepyhead. He perked up and said loudly, "Young man, you may not know this, but this 'waihui' is a new specialty dish launched by our Jin Yu Lou. It's to make things convenient for our customers who are working away from home. If it's inconvenient for you to dine at our restaurant, you can pre-order your meals from the cheap kitchen, and the 'waihui' will deliver them to your designated location when you arrive."
Xu Erlang nodded in understanding: "So, if I come here to work, I'll need someone to bring me a table full of dishes?"
Some in the crowd scoffed, "They say it's for the convenience of people working away from home. But how can ordinary people like us, who don't have time to cook for a living, afford it? They say the more you work, the more you earn, but what if no one orders from your cheap kitchen and you don't get a single customer?"
Laughter erupted from the crowd.
The waiter hurriedly said, "Hey! Our cheap kitchen is different from ordinary restaurants. The cheap kitchen is designed to solve this problem. We make small portions, just enough for one person, and the prices are cheap too. You know our boss, right?"
The young waiter asked with a proud look on his face.
Those watching knew that if the Gu family, the owners of Jinyulou, hadn't insisted on bringing out the stored grain a few days ago, many of them would probably be on their way to paradise by now.
The young waiter glanced around before proudly saying, "Our boss is doing this to make things easier for us ordinary folks, but we're operating at a loss to make this cheap kitchen profitable!"
He then turned to Xu Erlang and said, "Young man, I guarantee it! Once Cheap Kitchen opens, it will be packed with people. As long as you work hard, supporting your family will be no problem at all! And we pay daily wages! Where can you find such a good job these days! Which restaurant doesn't pay monthly wages?"
Xu Erlang's eyes shone even brighter as he listened. The young waiter wanted to continue to coax him, but Xu Erlang gritted his teeth and stamped his foot: "I'll do it!"
The people around him all scoffed, one saying, "Hey! You haven't even told us how you're pricing your cheap kitchen's food yet. Anyone can brag, right? What if you end up with no customers at all!"
The young waiter's face flushed red, but he remembered Gu Yaoniang's instructions and didn't mention a word about the pricing of the dishes at the cheap kitchen.
-
When Gu Yaoniang returned home, the Gu family mansion was already experiencing a fierce storm.
Gu Yaoniang returned home feeling uneasy. Madam Gu, who was now in charge of the household, was getting along quite well with Qiaoniang.
When she arrived home, Qiaoniang simply stood smiling in the hall and asked gently, "You're back?"
Madam Gu, however, keenly noticed that Gu Yaoniang seemed to have something on her mind.
She came over and touched Gu Yaoniang's cheek with some concern. Gu Yaoniang simply smiled at her.
This is her mother… her blood-related mother. If they weren't blood-related, then the ambiguous heartache and estrangement she'd felt all these years would have an explanation. But how should she face this?
"Why do you look so pale? Are you tired?"
"Madam Gu asked."
Gu Yaoniang felt comforted and smiled, saying, "Mother is so good to me."
Madam Gu paused, a strange feeling churning within her, but she simply reached out and gently patted her: "What? You just found out today?"
Gu Yaoniang smiled and shook her head: "I didn't say that."
Qiaoniang seized the opportunity to leave, leaving the mother and daughter alone.
Gu Yaoniang took Madam Gu's arm and sat down, their skin touching. Gu Yaoniang could feel that Madam Gu seemed a little stiff.
She couldn't help but have more guesses.
She shook Madam Gu's hand, feigning innocence, and said coquettishly, "Mother! I saw a child on the road today. His little face was all wrinkled, red and wrinkled, so ugly. Wasn't I very fair-skinned when I was born?"
This was a method she had devised in her mind after rehearsing it for a long time, a way to subtly test her mother.
Using the sight of other people's children as an excuse to bring up one's own childhood makes the argument more plausible.
Madam Gu frowned and asked suspiciously, "Where did you go? How could you have seen such a small child?"
Gu Yaoniang deliberately exclaimed, "Eh? You didn't see it, how do you know the child is still young?"
Mrs. Gu, unable to bear her pestering her any longer, gently tapped her head in annoyance before saying, "Babies are like this when they are first born. You were like this too, all wrinkled and looking like a little red monkey."
She sighed and asked suspiciously, "Where did you watch this? Such a small child shouldn't be exposed to the wind. The parents are so careless, taking such a young child out to be exposed to the wind."
Gu Yaoniang quickly said, "Mother! I only glanced at it, and the person was wrapped up very tightly. I was just curious!"
