Chapter 29 Old Friends Return

Lu Zhaoming felt like he was experiencing a severe "Mercury retrograde," or even a super-strong one.

The system's cold, impersonal notification that "health points have dropped to the danger line" was like a death knell, playing on a loop in his ears, so annoying that he wanted to smash this damn system.

He stumbled into the medical room and shoved all sorts of emergency medications into his mouth, as if he were playing a high-stakes gamble, betting on his own life and whether this transmigrated body was tough enough.

The side effects of the "Azure Core" are no joke.

While treating his wounds, Lu Zhaoming was mentally ranting.

This thing, anyone who uses it knows, it's a total rip-off!

He quickly bandaged his wound and gave himself an adrenaline injection before he felt a little better.

He walked to the window, opened it a crack, and scanned the dark wasteland outside with his sharp eyes.

Something's not right!

He could sense that several pairs of eyes were secretly watching him.

Lu Zhaoming immediately concealed his presence, like a cheetah lurking in the night, holding his breath and observing quietly.

Sure enough, a few minutes later, a familiar figure appeared in his field of vision.

Wang Lei?

Lu Zhaoming could hardly believe his eyes.

Wang Lei was a friend he had met before the apocalypse, a guy who was somewhat cowardly but loyal and devoted to his friends.

In the early stages of the apocalypse, they fought side by side. Later, during an attack by mutated beasts, Wang Lei was devoured by a mutated beast while covering his retreat.

Lu Zhaoming had always thought he was dead, but he never expected that he was still alive!

But why is Wang Lei here?

Moreover, he looked flustered, as if he was hiding from something.

Lu Zhaoming was filled with doubt.

He did not act rashly and continued to observe Wang Lei's actions.

Wang Lei approached the safe house furtively, glancing back every now and then, as if afraid of being discovered.

Lu Zhaoming was even more puzzled.

He decided to hold back for now and see what Wang Lei was up to.

“Zhaoming…it’s me, Wang Lei…”

Wang Lei's voice was very soft, with a slight tremor.

Lu Zhaoming narrowed his eyes.

He took a deep breath and opened the door to the safe house.

"Wang Lei? Is it really you?" Lu Zhaoming asked, feigning surprise.

When Wang Lei saw Lu Zhaoming, a look of surprise and delight appeared on his face.

"Zhaoming, it really is you! I thought I would never see you again!" Wang Lei said excitedly, and rushed up to hug Lu Zhaoming.

Lu Zhaoming turned slightly to the side, avoiding Wang Lei's embrace.

"How did you end up here? Where have you been all these years?" Lu Zhaoming asked, his tone calm and devoid of any emotion.

Wang Lei's face suddenly turned pale.

"Zhaoming, I... I've been in Scorpion's hands all these years." Wang Lei's voice was low, tinged with fear.

Poisonous scorpion?

Lu Zhaoming's heart sank.

The Scorpions are a notorious force in the wasteland who take pleasure in conducting cruel human experiments. No one captured by them ever comes out alive.

“Scorpion? Why did they capture you?” Lu Zhaoming asked.

“They…they captured me to do experiments, and…they even implanted something strange in my body…” Wang Lei said, his eyes darting around, not daring to look Lu Zhaoming in the eye.

Lu Zhaoming became even more vigilant.

“Wang Lei, just say what you have to say. There’s no need for us to beat around the bush,” Lu Zhaoming said, his tone becoming serious.

Wang Lei hesitated for a moment before finally saying, "Zhaoming, I know the secret of the 'Azure Core,' and I know about the Scorpion's conspiracy..."

"Azure Core"?

Lu Zhaoming's heart skipped a beat.

He never expected that Wang Lei would know the secret of the "Azure Core".

"What do you want to tell me?" Lu Zhaoming asked.

“The Poison Scorpion is conducting an even bigger experiment, an experiment more terrifying than the ‘Azure Core’…” Wang Lei said, his voice trembling even more violently.

"What experiment?" Lu Zhaoming pressed.

“I…I can’t say. If I do, Scorpion will find out…” Wang Lei said, his face filled with fear.

“Wang Lei, don’t worry, as long as you tell me the truth, I will definitely protect you,” Lu Zhaoming said, his tone full of sincerity.

Wang Lei hesitated for a long time before finally nodding.

Zhaoming

Lu Zhaoming nodded.

“Okay, you rest first, and tell me when you’ve thought it through,” Lu Zhaoming said.

He arranged for Su Li and Bai Yu to secretly monitor Wang Lei, while he pretended to welcome Wang Lei into the safe house.

Shortly after Wang Lei entered the safe house, a figure suddenly appeared outside.

"Brother! Brother! Where are you?"

A young voice echoed across the wasteland.

Lu Zhaoming was startled.

It's a knife!

Wang Lei's younger brother, Xiao Dao!

How did Xiao Dao end up here?

Shouldn't he be in another shelter?

He immediately went outside and saw Xiaodao standing outside the safe house.

Xiao Dao rushed up to Lu Zhaoming as soon as he saw him.

"Where did you hide my brother? You liar!" Xiao Dao roared, about to attack Lu Zhaoming.

Lu Zhaoming grabbed Xiao Dao's wrist.

“Calm down, Xiao Dao. Your brother is with me. I didn’t hurt him,” Lu Zhaoming said.

"Bullshit! Do you think I'd believe you? You're in cahoots with Scorpion, you're both trying to harm my brother!" Little Knife roared.
