Chapter 29 Old Friends Return

“Xiao Dao, listen to me, I really didn’t hurt your brother. I’m his friend, I wouldn’t harm him,” Lu Zhaoming said.

"Friend? If you really are his friend, why haven't you contacted him for so many years? Why are you only showing up now?" Xiao Dao questioned.

Lu Zhaoming remained silent.

“Xiao Dao, I promise you, I won’t hurt your brother. I will protect him,” Lu Zhaoming said.

Xiao Dao hesitated for a moment, but ultimately let go of Lu Zhaoming's hand.

"If you dare to lie to me, I'll make you regret it!" Xiao Dao said, then turned and left.

Lu Zhaoming watched Xiaodao's departing figure, his heart filled with worry.

As night fell, Lu Zhaoming tossed and turned, unable to fall asleep.

He always felt that something was about to happen.

Suddenly, he heard a whisper.

“Old Joe…knows more…Old Joe…knows more…”

Lu Zhaoming immediately sat up. He recognized the voice as Wang Lei's.

He quietly walked to Wang Lei's room and, through the crack in the door, saw Wang Lei lying on the bed with his eyes closed, repeating the same sentence over and over.

"Old Joe... knows more..."

They wanted to find "Old Joe" and uncover the secrets of the "Azure Core" through Wang Lei.

Lu Zhaoming was filled with anger.

He decided to play along, pretending to believe Wang Lei to lure out the scorpion.

The next day, Lu Zhaoming found Wang Lei.

“Wang Lei, I’ve made up my mind. Let’s go check out that abandoned experimental base you mentioned,” Lu Zhaoming said.

A look of surprise appeared on Wang Lei's face, but a barely perceptible struggle flashed in his eyes.

"Really? Zhaoming, do you really believe me?" Wang Lei asked.

“Of course, we are friends,” Lu Zhaoming said, his tone full of sincerity.

Wang Lei nodded.

"Okay, when do we set off?" Wang Lei asked.

"Let's not delay, let's set off now," Lu Zhaoming said.

Just as the group was about to set off, Su Li suddenly stopped Lu Zhaoming.

Just as Lu Zhaoming was about to happily set off with Wang Lei, Su Li, that woman—no, I mean Miss Su Li—suddenly blocked his way, her alluring eyes filled with distrust: "I say, Judge Lu, are you out of your mind? You dare to gamble with our brothers' lives based on just a few words from this guy? What if he's an undercover agent sent by Scorpion? We won't even have time to cry then!"

Lu Zhaoming rolled his eyes inwardly, thinking to himself, "Do I look like someone who's so easily fooled?"

But his expression remained serious as he leaned close to Su Li's ear and whispered, "Don't worry, I know what I'm doing. He's the only one who can lead us to the truth right now. Besides, even if he really is one of Scorpion's men, I can make him a dead Scorpion!"

Before the words were finished, a loud "boom" suddenly came from afar, and the entire safe house shook three times.

Lu Zhaoming's expression changed. He looked up and saw a huge mushroom cloud rising in the distance, with a pungent smell of gunpowder filling the air.

"Holy crap, they're serious!" Bai Yu exclaimed, grabbing his weapon and rushing outside. "These sons of bitches actually dared to bomb our territory!"

Lu Zhaoming grabbed him and said in a deep voice, "Don't be impulsive, this is a diversionary tactic! Scorpion's target isn't the safe house, it's us!" He narrowed his eyes and looked at Wang Lei, who was also looking at him. Their eyes met in the air, and an uneasy atmosphere spread through the air.

"Looks like we're really stuck in this mess..." Lu Zhaoming muttered to himself, then suddenly grabbed Wang Lei's arm. "Come on! Get in the car!"

"Wait, what about the knife?" Su Li asked.

"We can't worry about that now!" Lu Zhaoming said without turning his head. "If he's smart, he'll come looking for us himself!"

The roar of the engine shattered the silence of the wasteland as Lu Zhaoming drove the tank at breakneck speed in the opposite direction of the explosion.

In the car, Wang Lei was pale and his body trembled slightly.

"What else are you hiding?" Lu Zhaoming asked coldly while steering the car.

Wang Lei opened his mouth as if he wanted to say something, but in the end he closed his mouth and just shook his head.

Seeing this, Lu Zhaoming stopped pressing for answers and simply stepped on the gas, the chariot racing across the wasteland like an angry beast.

Just then, the car radio suddenly rang, and a magnetic voice came through: "Lu Zhaoming, hello there, we meet again..."
