The magnetic voice coming from the car radio was like the opening monologue of a midnight horror story, instantly lowering the atmosphere inside the car to freezing point.
Lu Zhaoming's lips curled into a cold smile. Oh ho, the main character finally couldn't hold back and decided to get involved himself?
"Scorpion, long time no see. Your voice is still as magnetic as ever. How's your voice acting career going?" Lu Zhaoming's tone was relaxed, as if he were catching up with an old friend, but his eyes were as sharp as a cheetah, staring intently ahead.
"Likewise, Mr. Lu's portrayal of an information broker was also incredibly convincing; I almost believed it." Scorpion's voice carried a hint of amusement. "However, the game should end now, shouldn't it?"
"The end? This is just the warm-up." Lu Zhaoming snorted, pressing the accelerator harder. The chariot roared deafeningly, carving a swift (стремительный) trail across the wilderness. "Want to play? I'll play with you to your heart's content!"
Su Li handed over a syringe. The packaging was simple, but the markings on it made her look serious: "Be careful, this is a high-concentration mental suppressant that can temporarily block some mental control."
Lu Zhaoming took the injection and skillfully inserted it into his arm. A cool sensation instantly spread, making him much more clear-headed.
"Thanks, little fox. You're the only one I can rely on when it really matters."
"Stop being so glib. Coming back alive is the real deal." Su Li rolled her eyes at him, her allure tinged with worry.
Bai Yu, sitting in the back seat, clenched his fists tightly, his young face filled with hatred: "Brother Lu, let me go and kill him! It was these scumbags who killed my whole family!"
"Calm down, kid." Lu Zhaoming glanced at him. "Revenge isn't about brute force; it's about using your brain. Remember, in the face of absolute strength, a brute is just throwing your life away."
He slowed down and began to explain to Bai Yu how to survive in the wasteland, how to use the terrain to hide himself, and how to judge the enemy's intentions: "...Remember, never trust anyone, including me. Only you yourself are the most reliable."
Bai Yu listened very attentively. Although he still wanted to rush up and fight the scorpion to the death, he knew that Lu Zhaoming was right.
He needs to become stronger so that he can avenge his family with his own hands!
After a bumpy ride, we finally arrived at our destination—the abandoned experimental base.
This place was once a secret research facility of a large pharmaceutical company, but it was abandoned after the nuclear war, leaving only ruins and rusty equipment, with a nauseating chemical smell permeating the air.
"Tsk tsk, this place is simply the perfect filming location for a horror movie." Lu Zhaoming jumped out of the car, looked around, and had a hint of amusement in his eyes.
"Be careful, there might be traps here," Su Li warned.
"Don't worry, I'm a professional." Lu Zhaoming pulled out a uniquely shaped pair of pliers from her waist and began tapping and hammering on the surrounding walls.
"Brother Lu, there's an old man over there!" Bai Yu said, pointing to a hunched figure not far away.
Lu Zhaoming looked in the direction he pointed and saw an old man in tattered clothes sitting in a corner, shivering.
"Let's go take a look." Lu Zhaoming gestured for Su Li and Bai Yu to stay where they were, while he slowly walked over.
"Hello, sir." Lu Zhaoming walked up to the old man with a kind smile on his face.
The old man raised his head, his cloudy eyes filled with fear: "Who...who are you? What are you doing here?"
"Don't be afraid, we're just passing by." Lu Zhaoming took out a pack of cigarettes from his pocket and handed it to the old man. "You look quite cold, have a smoke to warm yourself up."
The old man took the cigarette, took a greedy drag, and seemed to have not smoked in a long time.
"You...you really are just passing by?"
“Of course, we’re in the intelligence business, gathering information from all over the place,” Lu Zhaoming said with a smile. “I heard this place used to be a laboratory. I wonder if you’ve heard of it?”
The old man's eyes flickered, as if he wanted to hide something.
"I...I don't know anything, I'm just a doorman."
"The gatekeeper? Do you know what kind of research is done in this lab?" Lu Zhaoming continued to probe.
The old man shook his head: "I don't know. I haven't been here long and I don't know anything."
Lu Zhaoming narrowed his eyes; it seemed this old man was indeed suspicious.
He took a gleaming gold bar out of his pocket and placed it in the old man's hand.
"Old man, to be honest, we are very interested in the things in this laboratory. If you can tell us some useful information, this piece of gold is yours."
The old man's eyes lit up when he saw the gold. He grabbed the gold bars, afraid that Lu Zhaoming would change his mind.
"Is...is this real?"
"Of course it's true, as long as you tell the truth," Lu Zhaoming said with a smile.
The old man hesitated for a moment, but ultimately could not resist the temptation of money.
"Okay, I'll tell you. Actually... this is actually Scorpion's secret base."
"A scorpion?" Lu Zhaoming asked, feigning surprise. "What's he doing here?"
“He…he’s researching a drug that can control people’s minds,” the old man said. “He’s also captured many test subjects and is conducting experiments on them every day.”
"Experimental subjects? Who are they?" Lu Zhaoming pressed.
“They are all homeless people, and some young people he tricked into coming here,” the old man said. “They are all locked in the basement, living a life worse than death every day.”
Lu Zhaoming's eyes turned cold. It seemed that Poison Scorpion was indeed a heartless and insane guy.
