Chapter 30 Clash of Tricks

"Sir, could you take us to the basement to have a look?" Lu Zhaoming asked.

The old man shook his head: "No, there are traps there, and Scorpion's men are guarding it. I can't get in."

“It’s alright, we’ll go in ourselves,” Lu Zhaoming said. “Just tell us where the entrance is.”

The old man hesitated for a moment, but ultimately pointed in a direction.

"The entrance is in that room, but... but be careful, it's dangerous there."

"Don't worry, we know what we're doing." Lu Zhaoming patted the old man on the shoulder. "Old man, thank you for your cooperation. This piece of gold is yours. However... if you dare to tell Scorpion what happened today, I'll make you regret ever being born."

After saying that, Lu Zhaoming turned and walked toward the room the old man pointed to, leaving the old man alone sitting in the corner, trembling.

Su Li and Bai Yu walked over, their eyes filled with worry.

"So, Brother Lu, did you get anything out of them?"

"I got some interesting information out of them." Lu Zhaoming smirked. "Looks like we're going to have a big scene tonight."

He walked to the door of that room, took a deep breath, and then pushed the door open abruptly.

The room was pitch black; nothing could be seen.

"Be careful, there might be an ambush!" Su Li warned.

Lu Zhaoming didn't say anything, but simply took out a lighter from his pocket and lit it.

The faint firelight illuminated the room, and also the figure standing in the center of the room.

He was a man wearing a black trench coat, with a complicated expression on his face.

"Lu Zhaoming, we meet again," the man said slowly.

Lu Zhaoming narrowed his eyes, looking at the man in front of him.

"Who are you?" Lu Zhaoming asked.

“Who I am doesn’t matter, what matters is…we’re friends, aren’t we?” the man said.

“Friends?” Lu Zhaoming sneered. “We’re not friends, we’re just… acquaintances.”

The man sighed, seemingly somewhat disappointed.

"I know you have some misunderstandings about me, but... I really am your friend."

“My friend?” Lu Zhaoming sneered again. “My friend will not stand on the side of the Poison Scorpion, much less appear here.”

The man fell silent, seemingly unsure of what to say.

Just then, Bai Yu suddenly rushed up, pointed at the man, and roared, "Wang Lei! You traitor! You're actually in cahoots with Poison Scorpion!"

Wang Lei?

Lu Zhaoming was stunned for a moment. He carefully examined the man in front of him and then realized that he was indeed Wang Lei.

"Wang Lei, what are you doing here?" Lu Zhaoming asked.

Wang Lei said, "Lu Zhaoming, let me explain. I... I was forced into it."

"Forced?" Lu Zhaoming sneered. "Forced to collude with the Scorpion? Wang Lei, you really disappoint me."

Wang Lei's face was pale, and his body trembled slightly.

"Lu Zhaoming, believe me, I really don't want this to happen, I..."

"Enough!" Lu Zhaoming interrupted him. "I don't want to hear your explanation. All I know is that you are my enemy now."

After saying that, Lu Zhaoming suddenly raised his hand and pointed at Wang Lei.

“Tell me, where is the scorpion?” Lu Zhaoming asked coldly.

Wang Lei looked at Lu Zhaoming. He opened his mouth as if he wanted to say something, but in the end he didn't say anything.

"You won't talk? Then don't blame me for being impolite!" Lu Zhaoming said.

Just then, Wang Lei suddenly raised his head.

"Lu Zhaoming, just kill me!" Wang Lei said.

"What?" Lu Zhaoming was stunned.

"Kill me! I won't tell you where the scorpion is!" Wang Lei shouted.

Lu Zhaoming looked at Wang Lei, wondering why Wang Lei would suddenly make such a decision.

He stepped forward, grabbed Wang Lei's shoulder, and demanded, "Tell me, what exactly happened?"

Wang Lei gritted his teeth, a complex light flickering in his eyes. Finally, he spoke with difficulty, "Lu Zhaoming, you... be careful..."

Wang Lei's resolute decision left Lu Zhaoming with mixed feelings. He could sense Wang Lei's pain and struggle, but the urgency of the situation did not allow him to linger.

He took a deep breath, his eyes blazing: "Wang Lei, tell me, what exactly is Poison Scorpion up to?"

Wang Lei's eyes wavered for a moment, but he finally lowered his head, his voice trembling: "Scorpion... he's researching a drug here that can manipulate people's minds. He wants to use this drug to control the entire wasteland. I've had enough. I don't want to continue."

Lu Zhaoming nodded and patted Wang Lei on the shoulder: "I understand your pain, but you also know we can't let him succeed. Tell me, where exactly is the experiment located?"

Wang Lei closed his eyes, seemingly making a final struggle. Finally, he spoke: "The main control room is in the deepest part of the basement. There, the Ghost Doctor is operating the psychological suggestion device. Unless we destroy that device, no one can escape."

"Psychological suggestion devices?" Su Li frowned. "Do such things really exist?"

“It does exist.” Lu Zhaoming’s eyes turned cold. “Wang Lei, take us there. We should act quickly; every moment of delay increases the danger.”

Wang Lei nodded and led the three of them into a dark corridor.

The walls on both sides of the corridor were covered with cracks, and occasionally a faint electrical hum could be heard. A pungent chemical smell permeated the air.

The three followed closely behind Wang Lei, their footsteps echoing in the empty corridor.
