Before the echoes of the explosion had completely faded, Lu Zhaoming narrowed his eyes.
He knows that taste!
It wasn't some high-tech weapon; it was just a crudely made concussion grenade, the kind of thing low-level thugs love to use in the apocalypse.
"Tsk, is Scorpion setting off firecrackers? Trying to trick us?" A mocking smile curled at the corner of his lips, but he knew exactly what was going on.
"Don't just stand there, let's go!" Lu Zhaoming shouted, grabbing Su Li's hand and giving Bai Yu a wink. "According to the original plan, retreat to safe point number three. Hurry!"
Although Su Li is usually carefree and easygoing, she is decisive in crucial moments and immediately activated stealth mode.
Bai Yu followed closely behind, gripping a modified assault rifle tightly in his hand, his eyes scanning the surroundings warily.
Only Wang Lei stood there like a wooden stake, his face pale and his whole body trembling.
"They...they're here...I...I knew I couldn't escape..."
Lu Zhaoming didn't move, his eyes fixed on Wang Lei like a cheetah.
Something's not right with this!
The fear I felt before was an act; this is my true feeling now.
His tone changed, becoming mechanical and desperate.
"Can't avoid it?" Lu Zhaoming repeated deliberately, a hint of amusement in his voice. "Who said we were going to hide? We're here to do something big, what's there to be afraid of?"
As he spoke, he quietly activated the scanning function of the "Doomsday Judgment System".
Instantly, Wang Lei's brain activity was laid bare before his eyes.
Sure enough, there was a problem!
"Found it!" Lu Zhaoming sneered inwardly.
Wang Lei's brainwaves were abnormally active, flashing at a specific frequency, like a broken neon light.
This frequency is clearly not his own.
To confirm this further, Lu Zhaoming decided to bluff him.
He casually asked, "By the way, how's Old Joe doing? Is everything arranged?"
The moment the words "Old Joe" were uttered, Wang Lei's body jolted, and his eyes instantly became vacant.
He began to mutter to himself, his voice so low it was barely a whisper: "Take me to see Old Joe...take me to see Old Joe..."
"Just as I expected!" Lu Zhaoming realized.
Scorpion remotely controlled Wang Lei using the codename "Old Joe".
This psychological suggestion device was more advanced than he had imagined.
After confirming that Wang Lei was under control, Lu Zhaoming calmed down.
He released Su Li's hand and said calmly, "You guys go first, I'll stay and take care of some things."
Upon hearing this, Su Li immediately flew into a rage.
"What? You're staying? Are you crazy! With this burden, we're doomed sooner or later!" She pointed at Wang Lei and said without any politeness, "Lu Zhaoming, what are you thinking? Is it worth it for someone who might betray us at any moment?"
Bai Yu frowned as well, and hesitated before saying, "Brother Lu, Su Li is right. Our situation is very dangerous right now, and bringing him along will only increase the risk. How about... we just abandon him?"
Faced with his partners' doubts, Lu Zhaoming remained silent.
He knew that Su Li and Bai Yu were right; Wang Lei was a ticking time bomb that could explode at any moment.
But he couldn't abandon him.
After a long while, Lu Zhaoming slowly spoke, his voice low and firm: "He once saved my life."
One sentence made Su Li swallow back the words she was about to say.
Looking into Lu Zhaoming's resolute eyes, she knew that there was no point in trying to persuade him any further.
However, a strong sense of dissatisfaction began to grow in her heart.
Lu Zhaoming is always like this, making some incomprehensible decisions at crucial moments.
The atmosphere within the team suddenly became tense.
Night quietly falls; the wasteland night is cold and dangerous.
Lu Zhaoming stood atop an abandoned building, overlooking the entire base.
He has decided to take the initiative and find the lurking ghost doctor.
"Want to play mind games? I'll play along to the end!" Lu Zhaoming sneered.
He had Su Li spread the word that he was willing to exchange the chip he obtained from the scorpion for the antidote.
This news was like a pebble thrown into a calm lake, immediately creating ripples.
Sure enough, not long after, Wang Lei received a mysterious phone call.
The voice on the other end of the phone was hoarse and cold: "Wang Lei, bring the chip to the abandoned factory, and I will give you the antidote."
Lu Zhaoming was standing right behind Wang Lei and could clearly hear the contents of the phone call.
He patted Wang Lei on the shoulder and said in a low voice, "Go, remember my words, and be adaptable."
Wang Lei nodded mechanically and walked toward the abandoned factory with a blank look in his eyes.
Lu Zhaoming did not follow immediately, but waited until Wang Lei's figure disappeared into the night before quietly following him.
He moved through the ruins like a ghost, without making a sound.
The abandoned factory was pitch black.
Only a few old light bulbs emitted a faint glow, barely illuminating the surrounding environment.
Wang Lei stood in the center of the factory, clutching the chip tightly in his hand, his body trembling uncontrollably.
"You've come." A hoarse voice came from the darkness.
A figure slowly emerged from the darkness.
It was a man wearing a black cloak and a bird-beak mask.
It's the Ghost Doctor!
"Give me the chip." The Ghost Doctor stretched out his hand, his voice as cold as a venomous snake.
Wang Lei hesitated for a moment, but still handed over the postcard.
Just as the Ghost Doctor took the chip, a dark figure suddenly descended from the sky and kicked him to the ground.
