Chapter 16 Apartment
In the moving carriage, after hearing his sister's question, Gregor immediately perked up and said the excuse he had prepared long ago.
"I'm working in a security company now. You know, although I'm not very smart, I have a strong fist. Whether in the village or in this city, not many people dare to mess with me.
"Thanks to my fighting talent, I was spotted by a security company. Now I am employed by them and am assigned to be a bodyguard for the rich. You know, the richer those guys are, the more they fear accidents, so they are very careful about using money to buy security."
Gregor smiled and said to Dorothy, his expression was calm and his tone was relaxed. It was obvious that he had been practicing to say this sentence for some time. Looking at Gregor like this, Dorothy nodded her chin and said.
"That's really impressive. But since you're favored by so many wealthy people, the security company that hired you must be very well-known. What's its name? Where is it located?"
"Ah... your name..."
Greg was slightly stunned when listening to Dorothy's words. After rolling his eyes twice, he finally thought of something to say.
"That company is Heavy Security. Yes, Igwynte Heavy Security. What do you think, Dorothy? It's quite impressive, isn't it?"
"Indeed, it is written in a very imposing and rustic way..."
Dorothy's lips slightly raised as she thought about it, and at this time Gregor hurriedly explained after thinking about it.
"Listen to me, Dorothy. The Heavy Fist Security Company I work for generally provides services to the wealthy. Since many wealthy people require that their security services be kept confidential, I am not in a position to disclose the specific details of the company due to certain regulations."
"I see. If that's the case, then I won't ask any more questions. I was just a little bit curious just now."
Dorothy said, as she listened to Greg's lies, she also thought to herself.
"Huh... As a straightforward young man who is not far from being a fool, it is really difficult for you to work in the secret department..."
"But... I never thought that being good at fighting could make you famous... That's amazing, but isn't this job a little too dangerous? You will encounter a lot of dangerous situations, right?"
Once the topic changed, Dorothy stopped embarrassing Greg and continued to speak with a caring tone.
"Haha, it's true that there will be some troublesome problems, but that's not a big deal. Don't worry, Dorothy, your brother is very good at this business."
Greg laughed in response, and Dorothy nodded in reply.
"I see... Even so, you need to remember that your own safety comes first."
"It's okay. I know what I'm doing."
…
The carriage Dorothy and Greg were riding in drove forward and soon arrived at their destination, a small apartment building.
This apartment building has six floors and is not too high. The exterior walls are paved with red bricks and the window frames are white. Each floor has a small balcony, some with plants and some with clothes hanging. There is a pond in front of the ground floor. The ivy-like plants in the pond climb high on the red walls, adding a touch of green to the building.
The apartment is located on a quiet street with few pedestrians. There are tall trees on the street. The overall environment is quiet and it is a good place to live.
"It's not bad. Nanyang Road is in a good location. If you go north, you will reach the Riverside Park. If you go east, you will reach the church. It's very convenient for walking or praying. It's just a little far from the commercial street, so sometimes I don't go shopping."
Standing at the bottom of the apartment building, Greg proudly introduced Dorothy to her, while Dorothy looked around with a hint of surprise.
"You're amazing. Apartments in places like this aren't for ordinary people to live in, right? Is your salary okay, brother?"
"That's fine. I'm thinking of buying a single-family house in the suburbs when I save enough money. Come up quickly. Our house is on the second floor."
Helping Dorothy carry her suitcase, Greg walked into the apartment from the stone path in the pond. Dorothy followed Greg all the way to their suite on the first floor. When Greg opened the door, Dorothy saw a spacious and bright living room.
To be honest, although Greg did not have the knowledge of modern people, the apartment he rented exceeded Dorothy's expectations. It had a large living room with two bedrooms, a private bathroom, kitchen, balcony, and laundry room. The interior furnishings were also quite good, with sofas, a fireplace, a phonograph, and water and gas.
The room had good lighting and ventilation. Standing on the balcony, you could see the Riverside Park and the church spire in the distance. It was like heaven compared to the drafty cabin where Dorothy had slept in the village before.
"Well, I think your brother has good taste."
Looking at Dorothy with shining eyes, Gregor said with his arms folded across his chest, and Dorothy simply nodded in response.
"It's really... beyond my expectations, thank you brother..."
"You're welcome. We are family, after all. When I have more money, I will bring Aunt Hannah and her family over here!"
Greg's tone was quite ambitious, and Dorothy looked around and then fixed her eyes on the ashtray full of ashes on the coffee table in the living room.
"Greg, are you a smoker?"
Dorothy asked curiously. Gregor was stunned when he heard Dorothy's words, and then he hurriedly spoke.
"No, that's not the case. Sometimes my colleagues come to my place and smoke some."
“I see…”
"Ahaha, my colleagues in the security company are mostly rough guys, so it's inevitable that they like tobacco. By the way, Dorothy, you must be tired from the journey, so take a rest. I'll take you to register for the grammar school in a couple of days. Although it's past the start of the school term, I think it's no problem for you to join the class with your level."
"Well, I'll follow your arrangement."
Then, after putting the gifts away, Dorothy familiarized herself with her new home again. Then she went out with Gregor to buy some necessary daily necessities. They were busy all the way until the evening and then had a meal outside. After returning, Dorothy went to bed early on the grounds of fatigue from the long journey.
After entering her room, Dorothy locked the door directly. Then, instead of taking off her clothes to sleep as she had said before, she put her suitcase on the table and opened it.
In the suitcase, besides a few pieces of clothing, there were a few boxes, a booklet, and a bottle containing a pale finger.
At this moment, the captain of the Igwinter Security Bureau's hunter team was still in his room not far away, and Dorothy had already taken out a bunch of esoteric forbidden items.
Dorothy took out a corpse doll ring from a box and put it on. Then she opened another box, which contained the corpse of a giant gecko.
This was one of Edrick's experimental animals for the corpse ring. He kept a bunch of various experimental corpses in his home, some of which could be manipulated and some that could not. Basically, any corpse of a certain size could be manipulated, but not any that was the size of an insect.
Based on the experimental notes left by Edrick at home, Dorothy selected several types of experimental corpses. The large ones were packed in boxes and shipped by truck, while the small ones were directly packed in suitcases and brought over.
Under the control of the corpse puppet ring, the gecko in the box twitched twice and then began to move, crawling out of the box, along the table and out of the window.
Under Dorothy's control, the gecko climbed along the outer wall of the apartment until it climbed from the window of Dorothy's room to the window of Greg's room.
"Then, as a member of the Security Bureau, can you tell me some secrets about the mysterious world? Brother..."
In the dim room, Dorothy sat at the table, muttering to herself as she carefully moved her corpse doll closer to Greg's window.
