Chapter 5 Market Town
Marching along the river valley in the rain, Dorothy, with her corpse servant, did not have a smooth journey. The drizzle from the sky and the complicated and slippery road conditions were obstacles. The old gas lamp had limited lighting ability in the dim environment, and Dorothy encountered a lot of trouble along the way.
The biggest trouble was how to climb the steep slope from the muddy path back to the carriage. Because the path was steep and slippery, visibility was limited, and Dorothy almost fell down several times when trying to go uphill.
Later, Dorothy found the robber who had been pushed into the river and drowned by her. Relying on the power of the corpse ring, Dorothy summoned the second corpse. With the help of the two corpses, Dorothy finally got back on the right track. During this process, she also realized that the upper limit of the corpses that the corpse ring could control was two.
Once on the carriageway, the road was long. Dorothy walked along the carriageway with her "servant" for about an hour. Just when she was about to be exhausted, she finally saw a group of lights in the darkness in the distance.
Dorothy knew that she had finally arrived at her temporary destination, the town of Waukan…
After hiding the two corpses on the outskirts of the town, Dorothy wore a headscarf and held an umbrella and entered the town, stepping onto the streets of Walkan.
Because it was night and it was raining, there were not many people on the street. The houses on both sides of the street were small wooden buildings of about two or three floors, with simple decorations. Although it was night, only a few windows were flickering with lights. Although there were street lights on the street, they were only one at a distance and the lights flickered. The muddy road was full of footprints and wheel tracks, and from time to time a carriage could be seen passing from one side of the street to the other.
"It's a bit deserted..."
After sighing for a moment, Dorothy quickened her pace. She needed to find a place to rest quickly. Finally, at a crossroads near the church in the town center, she found a hotel that looked good.
Dorothy entered the hotel. When the short and fat proprietress behind the counter was about to send out the dirty beggar who came from nowhere, Dorothy slapped a few coins on the counter, and her annoyed expression immediately turned into a kind smile. Then she asked the waiter to take Dorothy to the best room in the hotel without asking Dorothy for any ID card.
A total of about five pounds in cash was found on Dorothy Edwin. According to Dorothy's original memory, the common paper currency of the Kingdom of Edwin was the Pound. One Pound corresponded to one gold coin and one nickel. According to Dorothy's seal, Aunt Hannah, who was a farmer in the village, could only earn about nine pounds a year. Dorothy herself usually did not have more than five coins in her hands.
In other words, the cash that Edwin carried with him was more than the average farmer's income in half a year. Compared with the cash Dorothy currently had in her hands, this amount of money for the house was simply a piece of cake.
Dorothy's room is located on the upper floor of the hotel. It is nicely decorated with table lamps, carpets, paintings, etc. Most importantly, it is clean and has a separate bathroom with a bathtub for bathing.
The moment the door of the mountain room was closed, Dorothy was so relaxed that she almost sat on the carpet. After she had rested enough, she immediately stood up, took off all her clothes and took a comfortable bath.
Since it was the first time that Dorothy faced her young body, the bathing process was not smooth. During the bathing process, shyness and curiosity filled her heart. She seemed both shy and bold in the bathtub, and the water often splashed.
Dorothy's bath took quite a long time, as her curiosity got the better of her, and when she finished her face was very red.
After taking a bath, Dorothy went to bed, turned off the lights and went to sleep. When the room was completely dark, she noticed something unusual.
In the darkness, Dorothy discovered that her fingers were emitting a faint silver light. Dorothy originally thought that the corpse puppet ring had a luminous effect, but after careful observation, she found that it was not the case.
The glowing object was also a ring. Unlike the corpse doll ring, this ring was worn on the index finger of Dorothy's left hand from the beginning.
It was a plain ring with a simple crescent moon on the top, emitting a little silver light in the pure black environment.
Dorothy was no stranger to this ring. As far as she could remember, she had been wearing it since she was very young.
According to Aunt Hannah, this was the only property left by her father who cruelly abandoned Dorothy and her siblings. Dorothy had kept it with her ever since she got it.
"What a poor child..."
Looking at the silver ring on her hand, Dorothy didn't think much about it. She sighed for a moment and then fell asleep.
A dreamless night.
When Dorothy sat up in bed, yawning and rubbing her eyes, she saw the sunlight shining through the gaps in the curtains.
After yawning deeply, Dorothy quickly got up, washed, and went downstairs in her wet clothes. After eating the bread and milk provided by the hotel for breakfast, she went out immediately.
The town of Waukan was much more lively in the morning than when Dorothy arrived in the evening. The rain had stopped, but the ground was not yet dry. Countless people were coming and going on the streets, and there were more horse-drawn carriages than ever before. Many ragged beggars could be seen begging on the streets, and in the distance chimneys could be seen sporadically spewing black smoke into the sky.
The bustle of Waukan was somewhat beyond Dorothy's expectations, especially the many horse-drawn carriages carrying freight.
In Dorothy's memory, the coachman who had taken her to the bottom of the valley once said that although Volkan was small, it was a relatively important transportation hub. Many caravans from the west coast of the kingdom to Igwinter had to pass through here. Igwinter was an important city in the southwest of the Put Kingdom and it was also where Dorothy's brother lived.
Now, Dorothy could have simply caught a carriage here and gone to Eaglewind and continued her original journey, but she did not do so.
Because the contents of the two letters found on Edwin last night were still lingering in her mind.
'Under the seemingly ordinary surface of this world... there are extraordinary secrets... and in that secret world, someone has already set their sights on me. Although I don't know the reason, I can't just sit there and wait for death...'
Dorothy thought so as she walked on the busy street. After what happened last night, she couldn't just take a car and leave peacefully, pretending to be an ostrich and turning a blind eye to the inexplicable threat she was facing.
Dorothy felt she would never be able to sleep peacefully if she couldn't figure out the mysterious organization that attacked her.
"We can't just wait for them to come to us again. We have to think of something..."
Dorothy was worried. Being passive meant being at a disadvantage. Although she didn't know how those guys got the information about her itinerary, if she got it once, she might get it a second time. If she was found again, she didn't know what the consequences would be. The original Dorothy died because of this, and she didn't want to die again.
Therefore, rather than being found by them at any time, it is better to take the initiative and at least find out some information about them, which is better than knowing nothing now.
Indeed, according to the letter on Edwin, some of those guys have now come to the town of Wakhan. This is indeed an opportunity for Dorothy.
"But how can I take the initiative now? I am only a thirteen-year-old girl now..."
Dorothy thought distressedly that a mysterious criminal organization that perhaps possessed some extraordinary power was definitely not something a thirteen-year-old girl like herself could fight against, not even if she knew a little bit of the Dragon Roar.
Obviously, a head-on confrontation was impossible. As the enemy's target, it would be extremely dangerous for Dorothy to just come into contact with those guys, let alone collect intelligence.
“Heh… We can’t just call the police… Can ordinary police officers handle such matters? If the other party really has some extraordinary abilities, the police themselves might get involved…”
As she walked along the road, Dorothy began to wonder how to deal with the mysterious organization. Due to the gap in strength, she could not come up with any solution.
Just as Dorothy was considering whether to give up this opportunity and get in a car to run away, her eyes suddenly caught sight of a store on the street, and then her eyes lit up.
The store had a glass window with various photos of black people pasted on it. Looking up, I saw only a few words written on the sign of the store.
Henry Photo Studio.
