Chapter 6: Pretending to be a trickster
On the noisy streets of Wolkan in the early morning, Dorothy stood on the street, turning her head to look at the store signs beside her, with a focused expression, and no one knew what she was thinking about.
"Photo studio? Yes... In modern foreign countries, people in this era have their own photo studios for taking photos."
Dorothy thought that taking a photo was a common thing in her original world, but in this world it was still a luxury. Dorothy had never taken a photo since she was a child.
At this moment, looking at the photo studio in front of her, thinking about the contents of the two letters she had seen before, some thoughts emerged in Dorothy's mind.
Thinking of this, Dorothy slowly walked to a shop selling black bread on the street and asked the owner.
"Excuse me, how long has this photo studio next door been open in town? Are their skills good enough?"
"Ah, Henry? This has been in town for nearly ten years. The technology is impeccable. If you have some spare money, it's a good idea to go there and take photos."
After getting feedback from the bakery owner, Dorothy nodded thoughtfully.
"It seems necessary to take a photo..."
Muttering to herself, Dorothy walked into the photo studio. The light in the studio was not very good. A bald old man wearing glasses was sitting behind a long table, repairing a huge camera with great concentration. A pile of various parts were scattered on the table.
When he saw Dorothy coming in, a trace of doubt appeared between the old man's brows. While he was still trying to determine whether the girl in front of him was a homeless child begging, Dorothy had already put a few coins in front of him.
"Mr. Henry? You can take pictures in the photo studio now, right?" Dorothy said with a smile as she looked at the old man with shining eyes in front of her, and the old man also replied with a smile.
"Haha... Of course, this lady can take pictures at any time."
"Well...not bad, then can I ask you something? Do you have any photography equipment here?" Looking at the old man in front of her, Dorothy continued to ask.
"Of course. Our store has a variety of costumes and sets to choose from. I see that you have a very good appearance, miss. If you dress up a little with the clothes in my store, you can definitely look like an earl's daughter... no, no, a rich earl's daughter!" The old man said confidently as he looked at Dorothy in front of him, and Dorothy waved her hand and responded with a smile.
"No need for clothes or anything. Do you have any ropes or strips of cloth?"
"Rope... and strips of cloth?"
Looking at the smiling girl in front of him, a hint of doubt appeared in the old man's eyes.
…
Unlike Dorothy's previous life, taking pictures in this world is still quite troublesome. The exposure time is long, and the pictures need to be developed after taking them. It often takes several days to get the pictures after taking them. However, because Dorothy used the skill of "adding money", this time was greatly advanced.
After taking the photos, Dorothy strolled around the street twice, had lunch and bought herself a change of clothes, and then it was already afternoon.
Arriving at the photo studio, Dorothy took away the photos taken in the morning under the strange gaze of the owner Henry.
Walking on the street, Dorothy opened the envelope containing the photos, took out the photo and put it in front of her. It showed a girl tied to a chair with a cloth wrapped around her mouth, looking at the camera with resentment on her face. The girl's hair was extremely light white, which was not the color it should have been in this black and white photo.
This was the photo Dorothy had taken in the photo studio that morning. She pretended to tie herself up with a rope and tied a cloth around her mouth before sitting on a chair. Boss Henry looked at her with a strange look at her behavior.
Dorothy put the photo in the envelope and continued walking on the street. She kept asking for directions as she wandered around the town of Waukan until she came to the edge of Waukan, a street called "North Street".
At the corner of a crossroads, I silently observed an abandoned house in the distance that seemed to have been charred by a fire. According to the number plates in its row, there was number 24.
Dorothy looked around and saw a homeless man begging on the street. She walked over with a smile, took out two coins from her bosom and threw them into the broken bowl in front of the homeless man.
"Ah...hehe...may the Holy Father bless you, kind lady..." Seeing the coins in the bowl, the disheveled tramp raised his head and smiled at Dorothy, revealing his mouth with several missing teeth.
Seeing this, Dorothy smiled slightly, then took out two coins and shook them in front of the homeless man. After the man's eyes were wide open, Dorothy took out the letter with the photo in it and handed it to him.
"Put this in the mailbox in front of number 24, and these two will be yours, too."
Seeing this, the tramp nodded suddenly, then grabbed the envelope and ran towards the abandoned house in the distance. After he stuffed the envelope into the mailbox, he hurried back. When he got back to the original place, he found that the girl who had given him the money had disappeared, and there were two more coins in the broken bowl he left there.
After quickly leaving North Street, Dorothy walked around the town again and found a grocery store, where she bought a bottle of ink, a pen, some writing paper and an envelope. By the time she finished her shopping, it was almost dusk.
Carrying the things she bought, Dorothy walked in the twilight of sunset. She found a restaurant with a pretty good environment, ordered a large steak for dinner, and sat in a secluded corner.
While waiting for dinner to be served, she put paper and pen on the table. After filling the pen with ink, she began to write on the paper. After she finished, she felt dissatisfied, so she crumpled it up and started writing again on another piece of paper. She tried hard to make her handwriting more sloppy to overcome Dorothy's original writing habits.
Finally, after writing several drafts in a row, Dorothy finally wrote a satisfactory one. She held the letter paper in front of her eyes and looked at it carefully.
