Chapter 17 Relics, The Murderer (1/4)

I had never noticed this metal box before when I came to the storage room.

The metal box has a combination lock with a 4-digit code. Su Wantang tried to turn the gears on the code, turning her birthday, 1208.

Soon, with a click, the combination lock was unlocked.

Su Wantang opened the tin box and found that it contained some of her father's letters from his lifetime.

The envelope was signed Su Yongzhi—his father's name.

This is a letter from Uncle Wei, a close friend of my father.

Su Wantang opened one of the envelopes.

March 1960.

Hey bro, how's been lately? I see you have a happy family, a blissful marriage, and such a lovely little girl. I'm so envious! It's just a shame I'm not as lucky as you; I'm still single and childless.

These letters were mostly casual conversations and the content was quite simple, so Su Wantang read them relatively quickly. However, when Su Wantang opened the last letter, her gaze sharpened and her face turned slightly pale.

September 1960.

[Su Yongzhi, I'm warning you, know when to stop. You'd better not investigate the accounts; it won't benefit anyone.]

In the previous letters, Uncle Wei had been very polite to my father, but this one carried a warning tone.

As for the accounts mentioned in the letter, what exactly are they?

Su Wantang remembered that when she was very young, her father and Uncle Wei were just good friends. The two of them started a company together. Uncle Wei was responsible for expanding the business all over the country, while her father was responsible for the management and operation of the company.

Su Wantang's beautiful eyebrows furrowed slightly as she continued reading.

It wasn't until she found a slightly yellowed kraft paper cover in the tin box that she discovered it.

Su Wantang opened the diary and discovered that it contained her father's casual notes from his lifetime.

It contains summaries of company meetings and records the dates of contract signings.

Until Su Wantang saw a line of text:

[September 1st. Recently, I've noticed something's off with Lao Wei. There are obvious problems with the company's accounting records, but he won't tell me anything when I ask. I had to investigate myself, but he stopped me from continuing. This suggests he's hiding something.]

Su Wantang became increasingly alarmed as she continued to flip through the diary.

September 3rd:

Because of the audit, my relationship with Lao Wei has plummeted to rock bottom. We used to be inseparable, like brothers, practically inseparable. Now he's wary of me, and his gaze towards me is growing colder. It seems we can never go back to the way things were. Sure enough, when interests are involved, even the best relationships will deteriorate. If Lao Wei and I hadn't partnered in business, things wouldn't have turned out this way.

I still miss the old days when it was just the two of us.

September 4th:

I haven't eaten or drunk anything for the past few days, and I've been checking the company's accounts. What I found out shocked me.

I never imagined that Lao Wei had transferred company assets, converted most of the company's money into foreign exchange certificates, and falsified accounts to try and pocket this large sum of money! He even bribed officials to enrich himself!

I never imagined Lao Wei would be so audacious! He actually dared to do something like this! This is a capital offense! I found him and told him he couldn't continue this, and that he needed to return this large sum of money immediately. As long as he balanced the company's accounts, I could turn a blind eye and pretend nothing happened; we could still be good friends.
