Chapter 36 On the Road with the Army (2/2)

Putting the greater good before personal interests.

"In that case, hurry up and pack your bags so you don't miss your train ticket back." Mr. Lu looked a little reluctant, but he understood his son's helplessness as a soldier. As a father, he had to support him.

Next, Lu's mother and father hurriedly helped the young couple pack their things.

Lu Linchuan didn't have much luggage; he had already packed it. Su Wantang didn't have much luggage either; she brought a few sets of clothes and a small bundle.

"This is the beef sauce I made." Mother Lu took out a large jar of beef sauce and stuffed it into Su Wantang's bundle. "This jar of beef sauce is enough for you to eat on the road. You can use it as a roadside snack."

"These are steamed buns I made myself." Lu's mother took out a dozen more steamed buns, put them in a plastic bag, and wrapped them in Su Wantang's bundle.

"These are the boiled eggs, these are the tea eggs I made, and these are the salted duck eggs I pickled." Mother Lu busied herself taking out a large bag of eggs, tea eggs, and salted duck eggs, wrapping them in layers of plastic bags, and then placing them in Su Wantang's bundle.

"Take this box of milk, drink it on the way." Mr. Lu handed the two of them a large box of newly bought milk.

"Thank you, Mom and Dad." Su Wantang felt a warmth in her heart.

"There's no need to thank me, we're all family." Mother Lu said, her eyes welling up with tears.

Lu's parents rented a car in the city and took Lu Linchuan and his wife to the train station.

On the way, Lu's mother held Su Wantang's hand, her eyes stinging with tears, her eyes full of reluctance. "Good daughter-in-law, if you don't like living on the island, come back and I will take care of you."

"Don't worry, Mom, I'm very adaptable. I'll be fine living here," Su Wantang said with a smile.

“If any rascal dares to bully you, just write to your mother and I’ll teach him a lesson!” Mrs. Lu said, holding Su Wantang’s hand.

"Lin Chuan dotes on me so much, how could he possibly bully my mother? Don't worry," Su Wantang said with a light laugh as she squeezed her mother-in-law's hand back.

"That's good. When you get to the island, write home. If you need anything, just say so in the letter, and your dad and I will send it to you," Lu's mother said worriedly.

"Yes, Mom and Dad, don't worry." Su Wantang nodded.

"You rascal, you'd better take good care of your wife over there," Lu's father instructed on the way. "Work is important, but your wife and the baby in her belly are equally important. If anything happens to them, I'll be the first to punish you!"

"Dad, don't worry, I will definitely protect them!" Lu Linchuan said solemnly.

The car arrived at the train station shortly afterward.

After getting off the car, Mr. and Mrs. Lu watched Lu Linchuan and Su Wantang walk hand in hand into the train station.

"Be careful on the road!" Lu's mother called out worriedly.

"Mom and Dad, don't worry." Lu Linchuan gently put his arm around Su Wantang's slender waist. "You should go back now!"

After watching Lu Linchuan and his wife's figures completely disappear from their sight, Lu's father and mother reluctantly withdrew their gazes and got up to go back.

The train station was bustling with people, shoulder to shoulder.

The monotonous female voice over and over again announced train information over the loudspeaker, amidst a cacophony of voices and the constant whistling of trains, all blending together in a bustling, noisy atmosphere.
