Before anyone even entered the house, the aroma of food wafted in first.
Zhao Jing carried a bulging cloth bag, while Sun Xiulian carefully held an enamel lunchbox. The two entered the house one after the other.
"Quick, take this!" Zhao Jing shoved the cloth bag into Su Wantang's arms, and a wave of warmth wafted through the fabric. "I boiled twenty tea eggs for you and made ten scallion pancakes. That should be enough for you to eat on the road for several days."
Sun Xiulian handed over the lunchbox, earnestly instructing, "I have braised pork and pickled mustard green buns here, all carefully wrapped in oil paper so they won't spoil easily. I've heard that it's hard to even get a hot meal in the Northwest, so you should bring plenty of dry rations."
The two heavy packages weighed down on Su Wantang, making her heart warm and her nose suddenly sting with tears.
She quickly sniffed, suppressing her emotions, and joked with a smile, "Thank you, Sister Zhao, thank you, Sister Sun. Are you trying to feed me like a pig? I'll definitely gain weight when I get to the Northwest."
"Being a little chubby is good! Being chubby makes you more resistant to the wind!" Zhao Jing patted her arm and said it with a straight face.
She made everyone in the room laugh.
"Please be careful on the road," Zhao Jing said with some concern. "Your belly is getting bigger and bigger, so you have to be extra careful."
“Yes,” Sun Xiulian said.
"Don't worry, Lin Chuan will take good care of me," Su Wantang said with a slight smile.
Lu Linchuan took the two packages from Su Wantang, turned around and opened another empty net bag, carefully placing the food inside, his movements even more meticulous than when he was tidying up clothes.
“Okay, stay with us in the Northwest and we’ll be safe,” Zhao Jing said with a smile.
"Don't worry, it will happen," Su Wantang said with a smile.
Once she gets to the Northwest, she plans to send some of the local produce to her sisters-in-law.
"Alright, then we won't keep you from packing your luggage any longer," Sun Xiulian said. "We're off!"
"Stay and have dinner with us before you leave," Su Wantang said.
"No, no, I've already cooked dinner at home. There's still rice cooking in the pot," Sun Xiulian said with a smile.
"Yes, dinner's all ready at home too." Zhao Jing waved her hand. "You guys go ahead with your business, we're leaving now."
"Okay." Su Wantang watched them leave, her heart filled with warmth.
After seeing off the kind neighbor, the house returned to quiet.
By this time, Lu Linchuan had already filled both of their luggage.
Looking at the luggage that was packed so tightly it looked like it was about to burst, Su Wantang felt her heart was also full.
"Alright, that's enough. It's only for a few days," Su Wantang said with a helpless smile.
“Yes,” Lu Linchuan said, “If Qin Tian is your uncle, then you will have family from now on.”
“Yes,” Su Wantang nestled in the man’s arms, “I have a very strong intuition that he is my uncle.”
"As for whether it is or not, we'll find out when we get to the Northwest."
A few days later, on a train heading northwest, the carriage swayed, and yellow sand swirled outside the window. Su Wantang sat by the window, clutching a bottle of water, her gaze occasionally glancing at Qin Tian's family across from her.
Qin Tian looked down at an old photograph, his expression complex. Occasionally, he would look up and meet her gaze, forcing a faint smile.
