Chapter 437 Gu Beichen's Glorious Return!

Chapter 437 Gu Beichen's Glorious Return!

Missing Lao Gu?

Yang Yiyi noticed that Su Yue was distracted and asked her softly.

Su Yue didn't deny it, and casually pulled the curtains open halfway to let more sunlight in.

"It wasn't easy for him in the capital either. That place is murky, and there are people everywhere watching the Gu family."

Yun Mu interjected as he served Yang Yiyi porridge.

"Don't worry, with Old Gu's temperament, who can get the better of him? He's probably already figuring out how to get back as soon as possible."

Su Yue smiled but didn't reply.

She knew Gu Beichen's capabilities, but her concern for him had nothing to do with his abilities.

"Yiyi, once you're out of confinement and feeling better, let's take the baby to the farm."

Su Yue changed the subject, pointing to the lush green wasteland to the west.

"I want to build an amusement park there so that Yunting, Ping An, and Ning Jing can have fun together."

Yang Yiyi's eyes lit up.

"Okay, then we'll have a picnic there and let them plant trees by themselves so they can experience the joy of labor."

Su Yue nodded, already sketching out that scene in her mind.

The ward door was pushed open, and a nurse came in to check on the patients.

"The new mother needs to rest; her family members should leave for a moment."

Su Yue picked up the first-aid kit and waved to Yang Yiyi.

"I'll go back to the factory and keep an eye on things. I'll come see you later."

She stepped out of the inpatient building, and a wave of heat hit her in the face.

That is the vitality that belongs unique to Hainan Island.

Su Yue's fingertips traced the newly hung bronze plaque, the icy coolness of the metal creeping up her spine from her fingertips.

Behind them, on the construction site, the roar of the pile driver made the ground tremble slightly.

Huo Wenxuan was standing with his hands on his hips, explaining the route of the drainage pipes to several technicians. Sweat dripped down his neck and into his collar, staining his dark gray work clothes.

Su Yue turned around and took out the red pager from her handbag.

A line of numbers was flashing on the screen; it was an internal line from the General Office of the National Defense University in Beijing.

Su Yue strode into the makeshift tin office, grabbed the red landline on the table, and pressed the call-back button.

"I am Su Yue."

A few muffled static sounds came from the other end of the phone, followed by that deep-seated voice that came through steadily.

"I've graduated."

Gu Beichen's voice sounded more composed than it had been six months ago, carrying a sense of weightiness honed by time and scholarly refinement.

Su Yue's fingers unconsciously tightened around the receiver, her nails making a soft scratching sound on the plastic casing.

When will you be back?

"The special plane will land directly at Haikou military airport at 3 pm the day after tomorrow."

Gu Beichen paused, his voice becoming slightly suppressed.

"The appointment has been made. He will be transferred to the position of Deputy Chief of Staff of the Hainan Island Military Region, with a promotion in rank. The transfer order will be delivered tomorrow."

Su Yue held her breath.

Deputy Chief of Staff.

A deputy chief of staff who is under thirty years old is extremely rare in the history of the entire military region.

This means that Gu Beichen has officially entered the core decision-making level of the military region, and it also means that he has completely won the power struggle in Beijing.

"Okay, I'll come pick you up."

Su Yue put down the receiver; her heart was beating faster than the pile driver outside.

She pushed open the office door and shouted at Huo Wenxuan, who was still struggling in the mud.

"Huo Wenxuan, the construction site inspection the day after tomorrow afternoon is canceled. I need to go to the airport."

Huo Wenxuan wiped the dust off his face and glanced at her sideways.

"Picking up Old Gu? Judging by your enthusiasm, Old Gu is returning home in glory this time?"

Su Yue ignored his teasing and turned to walk towards the Gu family's courtyard.

Zhang Huilan was drying the newly harvested grain in the yard when she saw Su Yue return, and quickly put down the broom she was holding.

"Did Beichen call?"

"I'll be back the day after tomorrow."

Su Yue walked to the water tank, scooped up a spoonful of cold water, and rinsed the mud off her hands.

"You've been promoted to deputy chief of staff."

The winnowing basket in Zhang Huilan's hand fell to the ground with a thud, scattering golden grains all over the ground.

The old lady didn't bother to pick them up; she rubbed her hands vigorously on her apron, and her eyes instantly reddened.

"Good, good! The Gu family's ancestral graves are emitting auspicious smoke."

For the next two days, the Gu family courtyard was in a state of near-frenzied activity.

Zhang Huilan dug out all of Gu Beichen's old, worn-out military uniforms, took them apart, washed them, and mended them.

Although Gu Pingan and Gu Ningjing didn't quite understand what a deputy chief of staff was, they knew from their grandmother and mother's enthusiasm that something great was about to happen in the family.

Gu Ping'an even polished his beloved wooden gun until it shone, saying he wanted to stand guard for his father.

The afternoon of the third day.

The runway at Haikou military airport was warped by the scorching sun, and the air was filled with a hot, acrid smell.

Commander Zheng personally led the team, followed by a long line of core generals from the military region.

Su Yue, holding the hands of her two children, stood on the side of the welcoming crowd.

Today she changed into a simple white shirt and crisp blue trousers. Her long hair was neatly tied back, making her look capable and elegant.

"Mommy, where's Daddy?"

Gu Ningjing tugged at Su Yue's clothes, her little feet stomping incessantly on the cement ground.

Su Yue raised her head and looked at the distant blue sky.

A small black dot appeared at the edge of the clouds, and as the roar grew louder, the camouflage-painted transport plane landed steadily at the end of the runway.

The cabin door slowly opened.

A tall figure appeared at the cabin door.

Gu Beichen was wearing a brand-new military uniform, the rank insignia on his shoulders gleaming in the sunlight.

Six months of advanced studies made him look as sharp as a newly drawn military knife.

He walked steadily down the gangway, stopped five steps away from Commander Zheng, and raised his hand to give a perfectly standard military salute.

"Gu Beichen, a student at the National Defense University, has successfully completed his studies. Please give instructions!"

Commander Zheng stepped forward and patted him heavily on the shoulder.

"Good lad, you haven't disgraced our Qiongzhou Military Region!"

The welcoming ceremony proceeded quickly, and Gu Beichen, as the newly appointed deputy chief of staff, gave a brief inaugural speech.

His gaze swept through the crowd, finally settling precisely on Su Yue.

In that instant, his originally cold and hard features softened as if touched by a spring breeze.

After handing over his official duties, Gu Beichen strode towards Su Yue.

Gu Ping'an screamed and rushed over like a cannonball, grabbing Gu Beichen's leg tightly.

"Dad! You're finally back!"

Gu Beichen lifted his son with one hand and pulled the panting Gu Ningjing into his arms with the other.

He walked up to Su Yue, and stared at her intently through the two children.

Su Yue stepped forward and reached out to straighten his slightly crooked collar insignia.

"Welcome home, Deputy Chief of Staff Gu."

Gu Beichen rested his head on her forehead, his warm breath spraying onto Su Yue's face.

"Thanks for your hard work."

When they returned to the Gu family courtyard, it was already dusk.

Zhang Huilan prepared a table full of hearty dishes, including braised pork, steamed grouper, and fresh vegetables just picked from the farm.
