Chapter 6 Going Home

"Alright, you can go home now."

The doctor's words relieved Yu Yin; she could finally go home, as staying in the hospital was too inconvenient.

Yu's father borrowed a car, and he and Yu's mother each carried one child. Lu Shurui carried the things, and Yu Yin walked by herself. It wasn't far to begin with, and taking a car would have been even faster. Yu Yin hadn't even had a chance to properly admire the scenery before they arrived.

"Yu Yin, hurry up, what are you dawdling for? Go back inside, you can't stay outside for too long."

A mother's love is always tinged with criticism, making it easy for people to overlook the care in her words and amplify the criticism within.

Yu Yin gave up resisting and obediently went upstairs to her room, following the memories in her mind.

Don't get me wrong, going upstairs doesn't mean going to a so-called "tube-shaped" building or a multi-story building. It's the stilted house that was most common in Yunnan Province at that time.

It should be said that the original owner was lucky. After she was assigned to Menghai County, she got along very well with the women's director. A quiet, unassuming, hardworking, and easygoing young woman was very likable, especially to middle-aged women.

Women's Director Zheng Mei was very fond of the original owner of this body. She found her to be down-to-earth, not impetuous, and conscientious. She enjoyed chatting with her and was sure that whatever she told her would not be leaked. Over time, the two became familiar with each other, and the original owner was frequently invited to Director Zheng's home.

Director Zheng's house is one of the few good houses in Menghai County. It was built in the 1960s by a Han Chinese cadre who paid for it himself. Later, it passed into Director Zheng's hands and is still very new.

The first floor is a large open space built with mud bricks and bricks as the base, while the second floor is a wooden structure, made of good quality wood. After going up the stairs, there is a long corridor with a railing more than half a person high on one side and three rooms on the other side. Each room is about the same size and has smooth door panels.

The roof is covered with tiles, so it rarely leaks. The house occupies a large area, and what Yu Yin likes most is that the yard has a wall, not made of bricks, but made of wooden sticks as thick as a child's wrist, with thorn bushes planted around the outside, which makes her feel very safe.

Every time he came, the original owner would silently pray that he would save all his salary to build a house like this in the future.

By a stroke of luck, in early 1969, Director Zheng was being transferred and needed to sell the house. The first house she thought of was the original owner's. However, the young man wasn't married yet, and she wasn't sure if his parents would agree to the purchase. After much hesitation, she decided to ask.

"Yu Yin, I'm being transferred, and I'm also planning to sell my house. Do you have any thoughts on that?"

"Transferred? Where to? Aren't you coming back?"

The original owner liked Director Zheng very much. She didn't mind her slow reactions and patiently listened to her. She even taught her some principles of getting along with colleagues. So, she couldn't quite accept hearing that Director Zheng was leaving.

“I’m being transferred to Kunming. My husband’s family and my family are all there, so we’re going back too.”

"Oh, that's good."

"Silly girl, am I asking if you'll buy my house?"

The original owner was so focused on the fact that Director Zheng was going to be transferred that he didn't pay attention to the matter of buying a house.

"I'll buy it."

The answer is a definite yes. This is the place the original owner dreamed of. Now that the opportunity has come, he definitely can't let it pass him by and will definitely buy it.

"Don't you need to discuss this with your parents?"

"No need. I've been saving my salary to buy a house in the future. My mom always says I'm slow to react and don't know how to say nice things, so no one will marry me in the future. I need to buy myself a place to live."

Hearing the original owner speak in a calm tone while saying embarrassing things, Director Zheng decided to sell the house to her.

The house price wasn't low, and even though he liked the child very much, Director Zheng couldn't lower the price too much. He also needed to make a living. In the end, he set the price at 650 yuan, which was quite a lot in this era, especially in Yunnan Province.

The original owner worked for a year and a half. Her mother didn't take her salary, telling her to save it herself. She started at 36.5 yuan a month, and after becoming a full-time employee and being assigned an administrative rank, she earned 42.5 yuan a month. In a year and a half, she earned more than 700 yuan a month, plus money sent to her by her brother from time to time, and her New Year's money from childhood. After deducting necessary expenses, the original owner still had nearly 1,000 yuan in savings.

The two agreed that before Director Zheng left, they would change the property certificate to Yu Yin's name, and the house would belong to Yu Yin. Apart from the colleagues in charge of real estate, no one knew that the house had changed hands, and those who knew promised to keep it a secret. The original owner thus quietly acquired her own house.

An impression surfaced from the depths of her memory, and Yu Yin remembered that the original owner had bought a house without saying a word, and didn't tell anyone. It wasn't until the accident happened and she had to get married that her parents found out that this quiet girl had done such a big thing.

This is a house, it cost real money, not just a few pennies. Mother Yu angrily slapped the original owner twice. This child, a quiet person who accomplishes great things, quietly unleashed a powerful move.

The original owner was a tight-lipped person who would endure being beaten and scolded by his mother without saying a word, which angered his mother so much that she left.

"Yinyin, why didn't you tell your parents you were buying a house?"

"I have enough money."

Well, I can't explain it clearly. Let's leave it at that. This child has always been slow to react, doesn't like to talk, and doesn't have many demands. Besides, the house has already been bought, which is good. It's perfect timing; we'll have a place to live after the wedding.

Mr. Yu didn't say anything else and went inside to see his angry mother.

"Alright, the child didn't waste money. The purchase has already been made, so there's no use getting angry."

“I’m angry that she didn’t tell her parents about such a big thing. She’s not an orphan.”

"There might be some hidden story, but this turned out to be a lucky accident. This house is in high demand, and we're just lucky; so many people are eyeing it."

After Yu's mother calmed down, she still had to take care of finding out if there was anything that needed repair.
