Chapter 11 Preparing Ingredients

In the past, the original owner would definitely have stood far away and kept quiet, afraid that they would come over and belittle her.

Xia Enru bought the tickets and walked over to the three of them.

"My sisters-in-law are going home from get off work, and we happen to be going the same way."

In society, a smile and a greeting won't kill anyone. Although she found Qiao Huizhen annoying, she had experienced many ups and downs in her past life and had seen all kinds of people, so she wasn't so easily offended.

"Xia, you went shopping. Looks like your husband, Lao Gu, gave you money again. The army just paid salaries, so your Chief of Staff Gu must be making at least 60 yuan a month now."

Qiao Huizhen knew that Gu Shaoxuan never gave her all his money, because no matter how much he gave her, it would be spent in a few days, and then the two of them would argue endlessly about money. Xia Enruo probably didn't know how much Gu Shaoxuan's salary was. Her habit of eavesdropping came in handy here.

“I went to the market to buy some fruit today. I never ask how much he earns. But Sister-in-law Huizhen knows a lot about my family situation.”

"I've heard that Chief of Staff Gu is young and promising, and he's quite the star in the army now. Hey Xia, why did you buy rotten fruit? Look at these fruits, they're all cracked. Let me tell you, don't mistreat yourself. If you don't have money, just ask your husband Gu. He earns such a high salary, how could he let you eat such rotten fruit? Don't blame your sister-in-law for not warning you, or you might end up in another woman's pocket."

Xia Enruo knew that Qiao Huizhen was up to no good and was seizing every opportunity to make a scene, wishing she could go home and argue with Gu Shaoxuan.

"I'm just putting the spirit of hard work and frugality into practice, so that my sister-in-law won't keep accusing me of having landlord mentality and exploiting the working people. Sisters-in-law, look at this, where is there a landlord eating rotten fruit?"

Liu Cuiyun and Tian Xiuli looked at the fruit in the bamboo basket and saw that it was indeed bruised. This Xia is really strange; she used to throw away apples that were even slightly rotten, but today she actually bought rotten fruit.

"Mom, that's right, these fruits have been bruised quite a bit. Xia Xia really knows how to manage her finances now."

Liu Cuiyun spoke in a local dialect. She came up from the countryside with her husband, was illiterate, and did housework every day; their life was just average. The person she envied most was Qiao Huizhen, who had a good job and wasn't looked down upon by others.

"What do you think, Sister-in-law Xiuli?"

Xia Enruo countered with a question.

"Yes, that's true. Landlords don't eat rotten fruit. Xia, you've changed so much, we almost didn't recognize you."

Tian Xiuli said with a smile that she used to tease Xia Enruo a lot with Qiao Huizhen, but now Xia Enruo is not as bad as Qiao Huizhen said. Her clothes are not only clean, but she also speaks politely and tactfully. She looks like a cultured person.

Seeing that both of them were praising Xia Enruo, Qiao Huizhen rolled her eyes. What a weathervane! They were turned against each other with just a few words. No wonder they were country bumpkins; they had no guile at all. Qiao Huizhen, relying on her job, looked down on everyone in the compound; in her mind, all the other military wives were just peasants.

Once inside, Xia Enruo quickly prepared the fruit and made fruit tea, knowing it would spoil overnight.

She reheated the steamed buns she made yesterday and served them as her dinner today.

Xia Enruo made fruit tea and brought a large pot to Ge Qiuqin, in exchange for two dried persimmons. The four little ones jumped for joy when they saw the fruit tea, extremely excited.

Since she needed to get up early the next day to buy groceries, Xia Enru tidied herself up quickly and went to bed early.

As dawn broke, Xia Enruo finished washing up, ate a quick breakfast, and left home. A military green Beijing 212 car was already waiting at the entrance of the family compound, with Wu Shaojun sitting in the driver's seat, a cigarette dangling from his lips.

Wu Shaojun frowned when he heard his older sister, Wu Meixia, say that she was going to take Xia Enruo to the market to buy groceries. What kind of nonsense was it for an unmarried young man to take a young woman to buy groceries? If people saw them, would he still be able to find a partner? Moreover, she was going to pay him 50 yuan to cook a meal. Wu Shaojun thought his older sister must have been bewitched and gone crazy.

Fifty yuan was more than his monthly salary driving for his boss, all spent on a single banquet. Even the most famous chef in Yongning City wouldn't have acted like that. But his older sister's words carried weight in the family, so he had no choice but to listen.

Xia Enru saw the car drive by, and Wu Shaojun rolled down the window.

"Is this Comrade Wu Shaojun?"

"Yes, I am Xia Enruo. Please get in the car."

Wu Shaojun was quite surprised to see Xia Enruo. He had thought she was a simple farm girl with braided hair, but he didn't expect her to be so beautiful, especially her big, watery eyes, which were truly captivating.

Xia Enruo wore the original owner's yellow floral dress today, and simply pinned her hair back with a hair clip. She had washed her hair before going to bed last night so that it would look a little more fluffy in the morning.

Wu Shaojun's eyes lit up as he looked at the mirror. He had long since stopped complaining about his older sister and kept glancing back at her in the mirror.

He threw away his cigarette butt, straightened his white shirt, and cleared his throat.

"Comrade Xia Enruo, are you a local?"

"No, I moved here with the army."

Are you a military dependent? Or is someone in your family a member of the military?

"My husband is a military officer."

Although they are about to divorce, Gu Shaoxuan will still be her husband in name only until the formalities are completed.

After hearing this, the light in Wu Shaojun's eyes faded. It seemed there was no chance; she was already married. Yet, he still felt inexplicably excited. Why was that?

"I see. Officers are much better than us drivers."

"No job is superior or inferior; as long as it contributes to society, it is meaningful."
