When I ran to the kitchen, I was stunned again. Even if a thief broke into the house, they couldn't have moved this much stuff.
"Mom, hurry up and cook dinner. I need to catch the train after I finish eating. Also, you need to give me a thousand yuan."
My dad said last night, "If you don't go cook, you're standing here."
Hu Qinghua's words came to an abrupt end at the door of her house.
She got up, dressed, and got out of bed, then glanced around.
Something seemed to be missing from the room, so I opened my eyes wide and took a closer look.
"Ahhh! Mom, Mom, come quick! A thief has broken into my room! My wardrobe, my shoe cabinet, all my things are gone!"
Zhang Cuifen closed her eyes. She had a guess in her mind, but then she thought it was impossible.
The wardrobes in all three rooms are large items; Wen Wan couldn't possibly have taken them.
There wasn't even a cabinet for storing dishes and chopsticks, or an iron pot, let alone any oil, salt, soy sauce, vinegar, or spatula.
"Qinghua! A thief has broken into our house!"
Hu Qinghua came out upon hearing this and saw the empty kitchen. She then went to Zhang Cuifen's room for a look, and it was just as empty.
"Mom, where's the money? Where are the tickets? I still need to go to the countryside, what am I going to do!"
"It's gone, all gone!"
Zhang Cuifen sat on the ground crying, and Hu Qinghua was so angry that his nose almost crooked.
"What about the money I got for going to the countryside?"
The mother and daughter looked at each other in bewilderment. Hu Qinghua realized what was happening and jumped up in anger.
"I'm going to report it,"
"no!"
She was interrupted by Zhang Cuifen before she could finish speaking.
"You go to the countryside first. The neighborhood office has a subsidy of fifty yuan for you to take. I'll borrow some clothes and other things I need for the countryside from my neighbors. I'll pay them back when I get my salary."
"Wait, your father and I will wire you the money later. We can't make a big deal out of this."
She was afraid that if things got out of hand, Jiang Wenwan might say something.
Watching Zhang Cuifen walk out while talking, Hu Qinghua stomped her foot in anger.
No matter how much I call her "Mom," she's still not my biological mother. Isn't she just biased towards that bitch who's her own child? Humph!
Where's the car?
Hu Qinghua went outside and looked into the yard; the old bicycle he bought two years ago was gone.
"Damn Jiang Wenwan, she actually rode off with the bicycle too, ahhh!"
She was going crazy. This Jiang Wenwan was hiding her true intentions too well. She was like a dog that bites but doesn't bark.
They actually pulled this on her! It infuriated her!
She hurriedly took her bundle to the neighborhood office to get money and a letter of introduction, then went to the train station. After boarding the train, she and Jiang Wenwan were not in the same carriage.
An County, Yancheng City, Jilin Province, in Northeast China.
Someone came to pick them up after they got off the train.
A middle-aged man in his fifties was holding a pipe, and a young man was standing next to him shouting.
"The 18th Brigade of Hongqi Commune is here."
"Some educated youth from Kaoshan Village and the 18th Brigade came here!"
Jiang Wenwan got off the train, rubbed her waist, and heard shouts as soon as she left the train station. She pushed her cart and carried her bundle over.
"I am one of the educated youth who came to Kaoshan Brigade this time."
When the young man and the brigade leader saw her, their eyes immediately fell on the old-fashioned bicycle she was pushing.
"Comrade educated youth, you're even bringing a bicycle with you to the countryside?"
Jiang Wenwan smiled and patted the bicycle seat, saying:
"Yes! I heard that our brigade is vast and rich in resources, so having a bicycle would be very convenient!"
The captain's lips twitched, but he was also happy inside.
There were only two bicycles in their village, but now, with this educated youth's bicycle, there are three.
It wasn't that I was eyeing her bicycle, but rather that it would be good if other villagers could borrow it in the future.
"My name is Jiang Wenwan. I'm from Tang City. This is my letter of introduction."
"Jiang, you can sit on the oxcart and rest for a while. There should be other educated youth coming later."
Jiang Wenwan glanced at her car and her bundle, which took up a considerable amount of space.
"How about I ride my bike behind the oxcart? My bike takes up a lot of space, and there might not be enough room for any educated youth to sit down later."
The brigade leader looked at the list in his hand, which already contained the list of educated youth assigned to their area.
Besides this educated youth, there were two men and two women.
If their luggage is included, there's no guarantee that one can actually fit in their oxcart.
“My oxcart moves slowly, you,”
“How about this, Jiang Zhiqing, if you trust me, I’ll help you ride the bike back to the village first.”
Jiang Wenwan didn't recognize the young man, but he looked rather simple-minded as he scratched his head and smiled, revealing a row of small white teeth.
The captain mentioned it.
“This is my youngest son, Zhang Weiguo. If you’re comfortable with this, have him take the car and the package back for you first.”
Jiang Wenwan thought that most people in this era were simple and honest.
It would be a bit inappropriate for me to sit on it.
He nodded in agreement.
"Alright, then I'll trouble you, comrade."
"My name is Zhang Weiguo, no need to trouble yourself."
"Jiang Wenwan! You heartless slut!"
I knew it was you! How could you be so heartless as to ransack the house?
Hu Qinghua was almost nauseous from the three-day train journey, and when he saw Jiang Wenwan, both old and new grudges surged into his heart.
Shouting, he charged at Wen Wan and slapped her across the face.
What a joke! Jiang Wenwan looked at her like she was a mad dog.
He reached out and grabbed her falling hand, twisted it backward, and kicked her away.
Hu Qinghua was kicked right next to a male educated youth.
"Why are you hitting me, lady?"
Jiang Wenwan rolled her eyes at him.
