Chapter 146 The Interrogation Reaches a Stalemate (1/2)

late at night.

In a heavily guarded secret interrogation room in the military region.

Deputy Commander Liu sat behind the interrogation table, his face ashen, the ashtray in front of him overflowing with cigarette butts.

Across the table, the enemy agent leader, codenamed "Vulture," was tied to a chair, a strange, cold smile playing on his lips. No matter how the interrogation experts from the reconnaissance company tried to persuade him with both soft and hard tactics, he remained as stubborn and unyielding as a rock in a latrine, utterly silent.

“Comrade Vulture, your accomplices have already betrayed you. There’s no way out if you resist to the end.” An interrogator tried to make a final effort.

A hoarse laugh escaped Vulture's throat. He raised his bloodshot eyes and said, slowly and deliberately, in broken Chinese, "Victory...belongs to us..."

Before he could finish speaking, he gritted his teeth, black blood instantly spilling from the corner of his mouth. His body convulsed violently a few times, then his head lolled to the side, and he fell silent.

"Oh no! He's taken poison!"

The interrogator rushed forward and pried open his mouth, but it was too late. A cyanide capsule hidden inside his dentures ended it all.

The trail went cold.

Deputy Commander Liu slammed his fist on the table, making a dull thud.

He examined the ashes repeatedly and found a few pieces of burnt and incomplete paper.

There were only a few scattered Russian words and numbers on it. The only recognizable words were "mole" and "military research institute," which appeared repeatedly.

There's a mole within the research institute.

"Go and invite Comrade Su Tang over here."

Half an hour later, in Deputy Commander Liu's study, Su Tang listened carefully to the details of the case.

"Comrade Xiao Su, I remember you said that you had checked the files of the exploration team that went to Xishan six years ago. You are familiar with the people in the research institute. Who do you think this 'mole' is?" Deputy Commander Liu's voice was filled with barely suppressed anger.

Su Tang pondered for a moment, then instead of answering immediately, asked in return:

"Commander Liu, do you remember the chief engineer of the exploration team, Geng Xiangdong, whom I mentioned to you? He almost desperately tried to stop my exploration in Xishan."

“I remember. You mean? He’s the prime suspect?” Deputy Commander Liu’s eyes sharpened instantly.

A veteran expert who dedicated his life to the country and made outstanding contributions was actually a spy who had been lying low for many years? This is truly a chilling thing.

“I’m not sure.” Su Tang shook her head, her brows furrowing slightly. “Deputy Commander Liu, although I feel something is amiss, I can’t convict someone without any evidence.”

After thinking for a moment, Liu Zhenhua felt that Su Tang's suspicions were not without merit. Putting aside the evidence, Geng Xiangdong was the most suspicious.

"Whether he is or not, he has to speak up. He definitely knows more than we do."

Liu Zhenhua ordered, "Bring Geng Xiangdong over here."

Upon receiving the order, the two soldiers immediately set off.

When Geng Xiangdong was taken to a makeshift interrogation room, he was completely stunned. When he saw Deputy Commander Liu sitting across the table, he instantly flew into a rage.

"Deputy Commander Liu! What do you mean by this! Why are you arresting me! What law have I broken!" He slammed his fist on the table, his gray hair standing on end in anger, and the veins on his neck bulging.

"Comrade Geng Xiangdong, calm down," Deputy Commander Liu said calmly. "We just want your assistance in the investigation. You only need to answer one question: why did you insist on preventing our people from going up Devil's Slope?"
