Chapter 257 The Exercise Takes an Unexpected Turn, War Begins Immediately (2/2)

"Click".

The trigger assembly is installed in place.

"Click".

The bolt is reset.

Finally, she aligned the ugly "iron lump" with the threads of the gun muzzle and slowly tightened it.

Once the last thread was fully engaged, a brand new, or rather, somewhat oddly shaped Type 56 semi-automatic rifle appeared before them.

The gun body was still that old Type 56 semi-automatic rifle, but the dark metal lump at the muzzle, though somewhat conspicuous, would go unnoticed unless you looked closely.

Su Tang picked up the gun, skillfully pulled the bolt back, and then released it.

"Crash—Bang!"

After the bolt moved rapidly within the receiver, it emitted an incredibly crisp and loud metallic clanging sound, clean and decisive, without the slightest hesitation.

That one sound alone made Gao Kai and Old Man Sun's eyes light up simultaneously.

This is the kind of smoothness only a true expert could achieve!

Su Tang handed the rifle, which embodied all their hard work, to the two of them.

Gao Kai's breath hitched.

He looked at the strangely shaped gun in front of him, then at Su Tang's calm and unwavering eyes, and his heart began to pound uncontrollably.

It's done! It really is done!

"Beep—beep beep—beep—!!!"

In the distance, a sharp, urgent whistle, as if it were tearing eardrums, shattered the tranquility of dawn and suddenly resounded throughout the entire camp!

The entire camp was instantly jolted awake from its deathly silence. Almost simultaneously, dim lights illuminated countless dormitories, accompanied by chaotic footsteps, the rustling of clothes being put on, and hushed curses. The entire camp was like a pot of water that had been suddenly brought to a boil.

"What's going on? Is that a reveille? What time is it?!"

"No! Listen to that sound, it's the highest level combat alert!"

In the gun repair workshop, the expressions on the faces of Su Tang, Gao Kai, and Old Man Sun froze instantly.

The exhaustion from a sleepless night was completely swept away by the sudden alarm.

Gao Kai's heart skipped a beat, and he blurted out instinctively, "An exercise... so early?"

Su Tang reacted the fastest. She didn't waste time guessing. Instead, she decisively stuffed the newly assembled modified Type 56 semi-automatic rifle, which carried all their hard work, along with the blueprint of the muzzle brake, into the bottom of an iron box filled with rags and scrap parts. Then she covered it tightly with a pile of greasy junk.

"Whatever it is, hide it first." Her voice remained calm, but her movements were as fast as lightning. "Master Sun, Gao Kai, remember, no matter what happens, don't mention a single word about this gun."

Inspired by her composure in the face of danger, Gao Kai and Old Man Sun immediately reacted and hurriedly began cleaning up the marks on the workbench.

Just as the three of them had restored everything to its original state, Chief Instructor Lei Kuan's booming, furious roar rang out from outside: "All trainees! All of you, sir! Emergency assembly on the parade ground! Thirty seconds! Whoever is the last one here, you're going back to your original unit today!"

The three exchanged a glance, not daring to delay any longer, and immediately rushed out of the workshop, joining the flow of people heading towards the playground.

The morning wind was biting cold, like a knife, slicing across the faces of every trainee.

The entire battalion of seventy students and the battalion of seventy students, totaling one hundred and forty people, stood in a square formation on the parade ground, their clothes neatly arranged. Many of them still had a look of confusion on their faces, as if they hadn't woken up yet, and a weariness from being forcibly awakened.

Lei Kuan stood at the front of the group, his face ashen, as if water could drip from it. His hawk-like eyes swept over everyone present, his gaze filled with an unprecedented solemnity and repression.

Everyone sensed that something was wrong. The chatter gradually subsided, leaving only the howling wind and the anxious breathing of the crowd on the playground.

"At ease!" Lei Kuan's voice was hoarse and heavy.

Instead of giving his usual address, he looked up at the gray sky, as if waiting for something.
