Chapter 391 The Fifth Research Institute of the Ministry of Industry (1/2)

Chapter 391 Su Tang from the Fifth Research Institute of the Ministry of Industry put down her enamel chopsticks, which made a crisp sound as they hit the rim of the bowl.

In the noisy cafeteria, the sound should have been insignificant, but it was like a pebble thrown into a calm lake, instantly silencing Chen Xiaocao and Liu Landi, who were sitting at the same table.

Su Tang looked at Wang Xiaoya. Those eyes, which usually carried a hint of aloofness and calmness, were now as sharp as two scalpels, as if trying to cut through all her pretenses.

"Wang Xiaoya, look at me." Her voice wasn't loud, but it carried an undeniable command.

Wang Xiaoya was rummaging through the meager amount of pickled vegetables in her bowl when she heard this and her body stiffened abruptly.

She felt as if she had been pricked by a needle; her hand holding the chopsticks trembled, but she didn't dare to look up, her eyes fixed on the few wilted vegetable leaves in her bowl.

"Sister Su An...I...I'm eating." Her voice was so soft it was like a mosquito's hum.

"Is something on your mind?" Su Tang asked bluntly, giving her no chance to dodge.

Wang Xiaoya's face turned deathly pale in an instant. She stood up abruptly, the movement so sudden that it caused the long bench behind her to slide backward, making a screeching sound.

"No, Sister Su An, don't overthink it. What could I possibly have on my mind? I'm perfectly fine!" She raised her voice, as if she were trying her best to hide some huge secret.

This unusual behavior immediately made Chen Xiaocao and Liu Landi, who were sitting next to her, stop eating and look at Wang Xiaoya in surprise.

Just as Su Tang was about to press for more information, a series of hurried footsteps suddenly came from the entrance of the cafeteria.

"Comrade Su An! Comrade Su An!"

Everyone looked in the direction of the sound and saw Sun Dahai, the old man from the armory, rushing in. His face, which was usually covered in engine oil, was flushed red with excitement and from running so fast. His forehead was covered in sweat, and he was panting as he searched through the crowd.

Upon seeing Su Tang, his eyes lit up as if he had seen a savior. He rushed over, took three steps at a time, and whispered in Su Tang's ear...

"Comrade Su An! Quick, come with me! The experts from Beijing have sent a car to pick you up..."

Su Tang responded but did not move immediately. Instead, she turned her gaze to Wang Xiaoya again, trying to find even the slightest flaw in her face, which was clearly different from usual.

Wang Xiaoya was also looking at her, her face no longer showing the panic from before, but instead a genuine, radiant smile, her eyes filled with pride and encouragement.

"Hurry up, Sister Su An!" She gently nudged Su Tang. "Don't delay the important business!"

She paused, then added in a soft but clear voice.

"I'm fine, don't worry. I'll wait for you to come back."

I'm waiting for you to come back.

These words acted as a reassurance, temporarily quelling Su Tang's unease.

Maybe... I'm just overthinking it?

"Oh dear, my good comrade, the car is waiting at the camp gate! It's not good to keep the leaders waiting! Hurry up!" Sun Dahai was so anxious that he kept stamping his feet, almost pulling her away.

“Okay.” Su Tang took a deep breath. Now was not the time to act impulsively. Experts from Beijing, including Zheng Hongyi, were also there. This involved Minister Xiao, so she couldn’t refuse.

She made her decision, looked into Wang Xiaoya's eyes, and said solemnly, "Wait until I get back, then we'll have a proper talk tonight."

"Okay." Wang Xiaoya nodded vigorously, her smile still bright, but a glint of tears seemed to flash deep in her eyes.
