The roar of the beast last night was just a false alarm; it was probably a wild animal in the distance.
But Qin Ye knew that danger lurked in the mountains and forests at all times.
He barely slept a wink all night, his ears like radar, alert to any slight movement around him.
When Su Tang opened her eyes, the sky was just beginning to lighten with the first hint of dawn.
The morning mist in the woods was like a thin veil, damp and carrying the unique fragrance of grass and trees.
Beside the campfire, Qin Ye was adding firewood to a small military-style cooking pot, which was bubbling away, emitting a rich aroma of meat porridge.
"Awake?" Qin Ye turned around, his voice slightly hoarse, with faint bloodshot eyes, but he seemed to be in good spirits.
"Hmm." Su Tang stretched out a big yawn, her bones making a soft "crackling" sound.
She leaned closer and sniffed: "Commander Qin, your cooking is amazing! It smells incredible!"
Qin Ye's lips curled up almost imperceptibly. He had seen a small bag of snow-white polished rice in Su Tang's small backpack. These days, that was a rare commodity.
"I cooked the leftover rabbit meat from last night with some of the rice you brought."
Su Tang secretly rejoiced; how could the spiritual rice produced by her space not be delicious!
She took the enamel bowl Qin Ye handed her, and the hot meat porridge warmed her from her stomach all the way to her heart.
After eating and drinking his fill, Qin Ye began packing his things.
"Let's explore deeper into the forest today and see if we can hunt some more game."
“Okay.” Su Tang’s eyes sparkled; she was filled with a desire to explore this unknown primeval forest.
The two continued their journey deeper into the dense forest, one after the other.
Qin Ye, being very experienced, taught Su Tang how to identify various plants as they walked.
"This plant with three leaves growing in opposite pairs and small yellow flowers is called Gelsemium elegans. You absolutely cannot touch it; it's extremely poisonous!"
"And those bright red little fruits, which look very fresh, but the birds in the mountains don't peck at them, so there must be something wrong with them."
Su Tang nodded earnestly, occasionally asking a question.
Of course, this knowledge of wilderness survival was child's play for her, a special agent.
In outdoor survival, recognizing these herbs and plants is an essential basic skill.
Qin Ye thought to himself, "This girl learns things quite quickly, but I wonder if she can tell the difference if we actually encounter her."
They hadn't walked far when Su Tang suddenly pointed to the ground beneath a fallen, rotting tree and exclaimed in delight:
"Hey, Qin Ye, look over there! Isn't that a mushroom?"
Qin Ye looked in the direction she was pointing, and lo and behold, it really was!
A cluster of plump, grayish-white mushrooms grew there, huddled together, looking incredibly fresh and tender.
"Termitomyces mushroom! What a lucky find! This is a real gem!" Qin Ye said, carefully picking the mushroom and wrapping it in a large leaf.
After walking for a while, Su Tang exclaimed "Wow!" again, as if she had discovered a new continent.
"Qin Ye, Qin Ye, there are so many little red fruits over here! Can we eat them? They look so tempting!"
Qin Ye looked in the direction of the sound and saw a patch of low bushes covered with perfectly ripe wild strawberries, each one bright red like a small agate, making one's mouth water just looking at them.
"Raspberries, you can eat them. They're sweet and sour, and taste good."
