Chapter 398 I won't give it to anyone, we'll talk about everything when I get back.

The two entered Political Commissar Wang's office one after the other.

Jiang Linchuan handed over the prepared interrogation report.

Political Commissar Wang sat behind his desk, carefully flipping through the papers, his brows furrowing deeper and deeper, the only sound in the office the rustling of the pages turning.

Lian Xiao stood to the side, unable to help but complain under his breath, "Political Commissar, these three are just low-level thugs. We can't get any core information out of them. As for the leaders, they've probably already disappeared somewhere."

Political Commissar Wang didn't respond until he finished reading the last page, then slowly closed the report, looked up at the two of them, and said, "Lian Xiao, you can go back now. Keep an eye on those three suspects and don't let them try anything funny."

Lian Xiao glanced at Jiang Linchuan, and seeing that he had no reaction, he could only reply with a "yes," and reluctantly turned and left the office. Before leaving, he glared fiercely at Jiang Linchuan.

The office door slowly closed.

Political Commissar Wang sighed, leaned back in his chair, and said in a complicated tone, "I already know what happened in the interrogation room."

Jiang Linchuan was about to explain when he was interrupted by Jiang Linchuan raising his hand. "No need to explain. I understand your difficulties. Special circumstances require special handling. I won't punish you for this, nor will I let anyone else know. You're so eager to get them to talk, even risking torture, probably not just because you suspect they're spies targeting the General Staff, right? Are you guessing that their real target is Comrade Xu's wound medicine?"

Jiang Linchuan was shocked; he hadn't expected that Political Commissar Wang had guessed it too.

He didn't hide anything and nodded solemnly, "Yes, I have that guess. The General came here for inspection, but he didn't have any particular objective, nor did he discover anything. The only thing that spies might covet is the prescription in Xinghe's hands. That medicine is too effective; if it falls into the enemy's hands, the consequences would be unimaginable."

“You guessed right, I had the same suspicions.” Political Commissar Wang stroked his stubble. “Comrade Xu’s medicine is indeed a treasure, capable of reducing casualties on the battlefield. It’s understandable that the enemy would want it. But right now, there’s no evidence; it’s all just speculation. But since there’s no evidence, let’s investigate!”

Political Commissar Wang looked at Jiang Linchuan and said, “Regardless of whether this matter is related to Comrade Xu or the prescription, the fact that spies were behind this and deliberately created the mudslide is something our military must investigate thoroughly! The mudslide has already damaged the railway and disrupted transportation. If they do something even more dangerous and threaten national security and the safety of the people, how can we explain this to the organization and the masses?”

After Political Commissar Wang finished speaking, his tone softened slightly. "This case is now in your full responsibility. I believe in your abilities; I'm sure you can bring down the mastermind. When you return successfully after completing your mission, you'll definitely be there for your promotion ceremony."

Jiang Linchuan, considering the potential danger Xu Xinghe might face, did not hesitate at all, "Please rest assured, Political Commissar, I will definitely investigate to the end!"

This matter is most likely aimed at Xinghe, so he has to keep a close eye on it personally; he doesn't trust anyone else.

"Okay, go ahead." Political Commissar Wang waved his hand. "Be careful."

Jiang Linchuan turned and walked out of the office, hurrying towards the courtyard.

As soon as they arrived at the courtyard gate, they saw Lian Xiao standing around Xu Xinghe, trying to make conversation by the edge of the medicinal herb field.

"Xinghe, your grass is growing so well, what's it called?" Lian Xiao pointed to a patch of lush green herbs, clearly knowing nothing about them, but still trying to start a conversation.

“This is a hemostatic herb,” Xu Xinghe answered patiently.

“Hemostatic herb, amazing! And this one? Can it cure fever?” Lian Xiao pointed to another plant.

Jiang Linchuan frowned and stepped forward. "Lian Xiao, you go back first. I have something important to tell Xinghe."

Lian Xiao turned around and saw him, raising an eyebrow. "What are you doing? I was chatting with Xing He. What important thing do you have that you can't let me know?"

Seeing that Jiang Linchuan's expression was serious and he didn't seem to be joking, Xu Xinghe smiled and tried to smooth things over, "Lian Xiao, you should go back first. Come back for dinner tomorrow, and I'll cook something delicious for you."

Out of respect for Xu Xinghe, he pursed his lips and reluctantly took a step forward, saying, "Fine, fine, for Xinghe's sake, I'll be leaving now."

After saying that, he left the courtyard, turning back every few steps.

The door closed gently.

Jiang Linchuan took Xu Xinghe's hand and quickly walked into the house, locking the door behind him.

Before Xu Xinghe could react, he reached out and gently cupped her cheeks, then lowered his head and kissed her.

His kiss was urgent and precious, tender yet intense.

The moment their lips touched, Xu Xinghe froze.

Jiang Linchuan gently sucked on her lips, his tongue carefully prying open her teeth, their tongues intertwining intimately.

The air was filled with the faint scent of herbs and wood and the smell of gunpowder emanating from him—a scent unique to him.

The kiss grew deeper and more passionate.

Xu Xinghe was almost breathless from the kiss, her cheeks flushed red, and she subconsciously reached out to push him away.

"Ugh..." she gasped for breath, looking at him with hazy eyes, "What's wrong? What happened?"

Jiang Linchuan pressed his forehead against hers, his breathing a little rapid. He held her tightly in his arms, his voice low and husky, "Xinghe, I have to go on a mission."

Xu Xinghe looked up and asked softly, "Is it about investigating this spy affair?"

"Hmm." Jiang Linchuan nodded. "I don't know how long I'll be gone. At least a few days, but longer... it's hard to say."

Xu Xinghe was already used to his sudden assignment and didn't complain at all. She simply put her arm around his neck, pressed her cheek against his chest, and listened to his strong heartbeat. "Then be careful and stay safe. No matter how long it takes, I'll wait for you to come back."

Jiang Linchuan tightened his arms, holding her even closer, as if he wanted to meld her into his very bones. "Don't worry, I will definitely come back. You stay at home obediently and don't trust anyone easily, especially hide the prescription well. No matter who asks for it, don't give it to them. If the General wants to leave before I come back, don't give them the prescription either. We'll talk about everything when I get back."

"I understand." Xu Xinghe nodded gently, burying her face deeper in his arms, feeling the warmth of his embrace. "Take care of yourself too, and don't get hurt."

Jiang Linchuan lowered his head and placed a gentle kiss on the top of her head, his eyes filled with reluctance.

The longer they spent together, the less he wanted to leave.

But with the mission taking precedence, personal feelings had to take a backseat.

A moment later, Jiang Linchuan released Xu Xinghe, raised his hand to tidy the stray hairs on her forehead, and said in a normal tone, "I have to go. If anything happens, ask Lian Xiao and Zhang Cishu for help. You can trust the two of them."

Even if he didn't like Lian Xiao, he had to admit that when he wasn't around, Lian Xiao was the person he could trust the most.

Xu Xinghe nodded, saw him to the courtyard gate, and watched his figure disappear from sight.
