Chapter 399 The Calm Before the Storm

Three days later, the sky darkened again, and a light drizzle began to fall.

The soldiers didn't dare to delay and immediately rushed back to the mudslide site. Taking advantage of the light rain, they quickly reinforced the mountainside to prevent secondary landslides.

At the guesthouse, Lin Hui's leg injury had mostly healed.

Thanks to Xu Xinghe's miraculous external wound medicine, the hideous wound has basically healed, leaving only a shallow scar. Walking on the ground no longer hurts, but standing for a long time still causes some soreness.

She looked down and touched the scars on her legs, a glint of greed flashing in her eyes.

The medicine was far more effective than she had imagined, and if she could obtain the complete prescription, its value would be immeasurable.

She glanced out the window, confirming that Director Li had already gone to the disaster relief site, and immediately got up to find the guard, a gentle smile on her face, "Comrade, I would like to trouble you to take me to town to buy some daily necessities, as we are almost out of soap at home."

The guard hesitated for a moment. Lin Hui was Director Li's wife and also an injured person, so he couldn't refuse. He nodded and said, "Okay, Comrade Lin, I'll prepare the car right away."

Soon, the guards drove a military jeep, carrying Lin Hui, towards the town.

Raindrops pattered against the car window, blurring the view outside. She leaned back in her seat, quietly watching the traces of the falling rain.

The car was parked in front of the supply and marketing cooperative.

Lin Hui asked the guards to wait outside the door, and then went inside while holding an umbrella.

There weren't many people in the supply and marketing cooperative. She quickly scanned the area and soon locked onto a female employee who had just started working there.

She pretended to be selecting items, slowly walked up to the female employee, and when no one was paying attention, quickly stuffed the brown glass bottle hidden in her sleeve into the other woman's hand, saying in a low voice, "Do it the same way as always."

The female employee's eyes narrowed, and she subtly hid the glass bottle in her pocket before nodding.

Lin Hui casually picked up a few bars of soap and two towels, paid for them, smiled and said goodbye to the female employee, then turned and left the supply and marketing cooperative without any suspicion whatsoever.

As soon as she left, a senior employee approached her and asked curiously, "You've only been here a few days, haven't you? How did you meet that woman? She looked like a wealthy person from the city. Is she related to you?"

The female employee felt a pang of anxiety, but she maintained a calm demeanor and waved her hand, saying, "She's not a relative. She just asked me a few questions when she was buying something, and we chatted for a bit."

As she spoke, she clutched her stomach and frowned. "Oh dear, I suddenly have a bit of diarrhea and need to go to the toilet. Sister Wang, could you please keep an eye on things for me for a while? I'll treat you to some meat buns when I get back."

Upon hearing that there would be meat buns to eat, the veteran employee immediately smiled and agreed, "Sure, hurry back, I'll take care of things here."

The female employee walked quickly toward the back door of the supply and marketing cooperative.

Once outside, she opened her umbrella and hurried off in the northwest direction.

Ten minutes later, she arrived at an old locust tree.

This is the agreed handover point.

She looked around to make sure no one was watching, then bent down and took an empty oil paper package from the hole in the tree. She put the brown glass bottle in her arms into the package, carefully filled the hole, and tied a conspicuous red ribbon to the tree trunk as a marker.

After doing all this, she breathed a sigh of relief, turned around and quickly returned to the supply and marketing cooperative, as if nothing had happened.

Not long after she left, a man wearing a straw raincoat and a bamboo hat passed by the old locust tree and immediately noticed the red ribbon on the trunk.

He glanced around warily, and seeing that no one was paying attention, he quickly walked to the tree, bent down, took the brown glass bottle from the tree hole, and stuffed it into his pocket.

Then, he untied the red cloth strip, put it in his pocket, and turned to disappear into the rain.

The rain was still falling, as if trying to wash away all the filth in the world.

Lin Hui sat in the car on her way back to the guesthouse, watching the scenery rushing past the window, a smile playing on her lips.

She has successfully delivered the medicine; now she just needs to wait for news.

I believe it won't be long before they'll be able to analyze the core ingredients of the prescription through the ointment.

Then, I'll be the hero!

I can finally return to my beloved homeland!

As soon as Lin Hui returned to the military guesthouse, her travel details were immediately reported to Political Commissar Wang's office.

After discovering that there were spies in the town, Political Commissar Wang issued a death order.

All military personnel and their families who travel to the town must report their whereabouts in detail upon their return, including even Director Li's spouse.

The guard stood in front of the desk, reporting meticulously, "Political Commissar Wang, Comrade Lin went to the town's supply and marketing cooperative and bought daily necessities: two bars of soap, two towels, and a box of face cream. From entering the cooperative to leaving, it took about twenty minutes. During that time, I waited at the town entrance and didn't notice anything unusual."

Political Commissar Wang held an unlit cigarette between his fingers, his brows furrowed as he listened intently to every detail.

Looking at this information alone, there is really nothing wrong with it; it seems like an ordinary purchase.

He was silent for a moment, then waved his hand, "I understand, you can go now, thank you for your hard work."

"Yes!" The guard responded and withdrew, gently closing the door behind him.

Only Political Commissar Wang remained in the office. Outside the window, the rain was falling thicker and thicker, tapping against the glass with a soft, pattering sound.

He hasn't been eating or sleeping well lately.

This espionage case involves a large number of people; the other side even dared to orchestrate a man-made mudslide, indicating their ambition is immense!

Just to be on the safe side, Political Commissar Wang picked up the phone on the table and dialed an internal number. "Xiao Zhang, go to the town's supply and marketing cooperative immediately and secretly inquire about what Director Li's wife, Lin Hui, did after she went in, who she contacted, and whether she did anything unusual. Make sure you find out the details without alerting her."

"Understood, Political Commissar!"

After hanging up the phone, Political Commissar Wang finally lit a cigarette.

The acrid smoke drifted out, slightly dispelling the stuffiness in the office.

He walked to the window, looked out at the military compound shrouded in rain and mist, and his brows furrowed even more.

As the rain intensified, the soldiers carrying out disaster relief efforts continued to reinforce the mountainside despite the downpour.

He felt inexplicably that the current calm was too eerie, like a harbinger of an impending storm.

Since the mastermind behind this mudslide orchestrated it, how could they possibly stay quiet forever? They must have other plans in store!

Political Commissar Wang took a drag of his cigarette, and the smoke slowly escaped from his nostrils.

Hopefully nothing serious happens again...

In the small courtyard.

Xu Xinghe looked at the increasingly heavy rain and felt somewhat worried.

Her carefully tended medicinal herb garden is of utmost importance; these herbs are delicate and cannot withstand prolonged exposure to rain.

She immediately turned around and went back into the house, picked up the bamboo frame and tarpaulin that she had prepared beforehand, and walked towards the medicinal herb field in the rain.

The rain soaked her hair and the hem of her clothes, and the slightly cool touch made her shiver, but she still quickly set up the awning.

First, firmly insert the bamboo frame around the medicinal herb field, then carefully lay the tarpaulin on it and secure the corners with ropes to prevent it from being blown over by the wind.

After working for a while, seeing that the herbs in the medicinal field were well protected, she finally breathed a sigh of relief, wiped the rain off her face, and turned to go back inside to change her clothes.

After changing into dry clothes, Xu Xinghe went to the kitchen and opened the rice container and vegetable basket to take a look.

There's enough rice, but only a small handful of vegetables left, not enough for the next few days.

She thought of Aunt Mei.

Aunt Mei's family grows a lot of vegetables, and I often give her some. This time, I can go and get some for emergencies.

She found an oil-paper umbrella, opened it, and walked towards Aunt Mei's house.
