Chapter 393 Unbearable Morning Sickness, A Tough Guy's Tender Heart
Lu Jingyan carried Su Wantang into the house and placed her on the sofa.
Wang Ma brought the dishes out of the kitchen and placed them on the table.
"Miss, I made your favorite sweet and sour pork ribs today."
Su Wantang's mouth was practically watering as she looked at the plate of ribs.
"Wang Ma, you are so kind."
Lu Jingyan sat down next to her and put a piece of spare rib on her plate.
"Eat more, you're two people now."
Su Wantang took a bite, and her eyes lit up.
"Wang Ma's cooking skills are absolutely amazing."
The three people sat at the table, eating and chatting.
Aunt Wang started talking about the gossip in the compound.
"Young Miss, did you know that the Shen family's house has been sealed off?"
Su Wantang raised her head.
"So fast!"
“That’s right,” said Wang Ma. “I heard that Shen Weimin embezzled a huge amount of money, and the higher-ups were furious and sealed off the house.”
Lu Jingyan took a sip of soup.
"Serves you right."
Aunt Wang added, "Also, there are a lot of people at the performing arts troupe talking about Shen Qing."
"say what"
"They say she brought this on herself," Wang Ma laughed. "People say that if she had been honest and upright, she wouldn't have ended up like this."
Su Wantang didn't say anything and continued eating the ribs.
Lu Jingyan looked at her with a smile in his eyes.
After dinner, Lu Jingyan helped Su Wantang take a walk in the courtyard.
The night was dark, and the stars in the sky were shining brightly.
Su Wantang walked slowly, one hand supporting her waist, the other held by Lu Jingyan.
"Jingyan, what do you think the baby will be like after it's born?"
Lu Jingyan thought for a moment.
"I should be as good-looking as you."
Su Wantang smiled.
"What if someone is like you, both fierce and cold?"
"That's good too," Lu Jingyan said. "At least we won't be bullied."
The two people walked to the gate of the courtyard and stopped.
Su Wantang raised her head and looked at the starry sky.
"Jingyan, do you think we'll always be this happy?"
Lu Jingyan gripped her hand tightly.
Yes, it will.
How did you know?
"Because I am here."
Su Wantang turned her head and looked at him.
The moonlight shone on his face, clearly outlining his features.
She stood on tiptoe and kissed him on the lips.
"Jingyan, thank you."
Lu Jingyan paused for a moment, then smiled.
He lowered his head and deepened the kiss.
The two embraced each other under the moonlight.
After a while, Lu Jingyan released her.
"Come inside, it's chilly outside."
......
As soon as the morning light peeked through the curtains, Su Wantang covered her mouth and rushed to the bathroom.
Lu Jingyan jumped out of bed and followed behind her.
"Wow--"
She was vomiting violently by the toilet, her stomach churning and all she was throwing up was acidic water.
Lu Jingyan squatted down beside her, patting her back with one hand and supporting her forehead with the other.
"If you vomit again, there won't be anything left." His voice was tense.
Su Wantang raised her head, her face was frighteningly pale, and her lips were bloodless.
"I...I don't want to throw up..." Tears welled up in her eyes, "but I can't control it..."
Lu Jingyan took a wet towel from the side and wiped her face.
The movement was very light, but the fingers were trembling.
Didn't you eat half a bowl of porridge last night?
"She threw it all up." Su Wantang leaned against him, too weak to even speak. "This child is so exhausting..."
Lu Jingyan carried her back to bed and covered her with the blanket.
"I'll go ask Wang Ma to cook something light."
"No..." Su Wantang grabbed his hand, "I feel like throwing up just from the smell."
Lu Jingyan stood by the bed, his fists clenched tightly.
He had seen it all on the battlefield, and he never blinked even when faced with a hail of bullets.
But seeing her like this, he wished he could suffer in her place.
"I'm going to the military base to ask for leave," he said.
"No need," Su Wantang shook her head. "You go ahead, Aunt Wang is here."
Lu Jingyan wanted to say something, but she pushed him.
"Go quickly, don't keep people waiting."
He had no choice but to go out.
As the jeep drove out of the compound, his mind was filled with her pale face.
On the training field, Gao Jianjun's successor, Xiao Liu, called out "Brigade Commander Lu" three times before he reacted.
"Brigade Commander, you don't seem to be feeling well today," Xiao Liu said cautiously.
Lu Jingyan didn't reply. He walked to the shooting range and picked up his gun.
"Bang bang bang—"
All three shots missed.
The soldiers nearby looked at each other in bewilderment.
Commander Lu's marksmanship is top-notch, what's wrong with him today?
Lu Jingyan put down his gun and turned to walk towards his office.
"Training continues, I have something to attend to."
He sat in his office and lit a cigarette.
Amidst the swirling smoke, he recalled how Su Wantang had vomited after only a couple of bites of food the previous night.
She's lost a lot of weight recently; her wrists are so thin he can hold them in one hand.
There was a knock on the door.
"Enter."
Xiao Liu poked his head in: "Brigade Commander, the old squad leader asked me to pass on a message to you."
"explain."
He said that his wife also suffered from severe vomiting during her pregnancy, but he cooked hot and sour soup, and she felt better after just one bowl.
Lu Jingyan raised his head.
Hot and sour soup
"Yeah, the old squad leader said sour things are good for the appetite, and spicy things are good for nausea." Xiao Liu scratched his head. "But I don't know if it'll even work..."
Lu Jingyan stood up.
"Training will proceed as scheduled. I'm leaving now."
He drove straight to the vegetable market.
The market was packed with people, and his military uniform stood out conspicuously.
"Comrade, what would you like to buy?" the vegetable vendor greeted him warmly.
What does hot and sour soup need?
The woman paused for a moment, then laughed: "Oh, you're cooking for your wife, so you need tomatoes, eggs, tofu, chili peppers..."
Lu Jingyan bought a bunch of things as she suggested.
When I got home, Wang Ma was airing out the quilts in the yard.
I was startled when I saw him come back carrying groceries.
"Commander, what's wrong with you...?"
"I'll cook." Lu Jingyan walked towards the kitchen.
Wang Ma chased after him, saying, "Commander, you can't cook? Let me do it."
"No need." Lu Jingyan placed the dishes on the stove. "I'll do it myself."
Wang Ma stood at the door, watching him roll up his sleeves, revealing his strong forearms.
He washed the tomatoes first.
The tap was turned on too high, and water splashed all over me.
Then chop the chili peppers.
His knife skills were quite nimble, but as he was cutting, he suddenly rubbed his eyes.
"hiss--"
Chili juice got in my eyes.
Wang Ma covered her mouth and laughed at the door.
Lu Jingyan rinsed his eyes with water for a long time, but they were still red.
Next, crack the eggs.
With a forceful pull, half of the eggshell broke and fell into the bowl.
He tried to scoop it up with his fingers, but the more he tried, the more fragmented it became.
Finally, pour it into the pot, shell and all.
Wang Ma couldn't bear to watch any longer and wanted to go in and help.
Lu Jingyan turned around: "Wang Ma, please go out."
"But Commander..."
"I can do it."
Wang Ma had no choice but to leave.
Lu Jingyan started cooking.
If the heat isn't controlled properly, black smoke will rise from the pot.
He quickly added water.
Too much water was added, and the soup turned into thin porridge.
He added salt.
The salt shaker and sugar shaker were placed together, and he took the wrong one.
Pour in a spoonful of white sugar.
I took a bite.
Sweet.
He hesitated for a moment, then added a large spoonful of salt.
Try it again.
It's salty, sweet, and bitter at the same time.
He stood by the stove, staring at the pot of dark soup, and remained silent for a long time.
