Chapter 394 Late-Night Food Hunt, Shocking Changes at the Old House

In the end, I filled a bowl and took it upstairs.

Su Wantang was lying in bed when she heard footsteps and opened her eyes.

"You're awake," Lu Jingyan said, placing the bowl on the bedside table.

Su Wantang looked at the bowl of soup.

It was dark and covered with eggshell fragments and a few pieces of burnt tomato.

"What...what is this?"

"Hot and sour soup," Lu Jingyan said matter-of-factly.

Su Wantang's lips twitched.

She looked at his hand.

The index finger was wrapped in gauze, and a little blood was seeping out.

You are injured.

"It's from chopping vegetables, it's nothing." Lu Jingyan picked up the bowl. "Have a taste."

Su Wantang took the bowl and smelled it.

A burnt smell mixed with a sweet smell wafted over.

Her stomach started churning again.

But seeing the expectant look in his eyes, she still scooped up a spoonful.

Put it in your mouth.

It has sweet, salty, bitter, and spicy flavors—it has everything, but it doesn't have a normal taste.

She swallowed it.

Then he suddenly turned around and vomited into the basin next to the bed.

"Wow--"

He vomited it all on Lu Jingyan.

He looked down at his military uniform, then at her.

It doesn't taste good.

After Su Wantang finished vomiting, tears welled up in her eyes.

She looked at him, not knowing whether to laugh or cry.

"Jingyan, are you trying to poison me?"

Lu Jingyan remained silent for a few seconds.

"I'll redo it."

"No!" Su Wantang grabbed him. "I won't eat anymore, really."

Her eyes welled up with tears as she looked at the wound on his hand.

"You roughneck, you never even step into the kitchen normally, what's wrong with you today?"

Lu Jingyan sat down on the edge of the bed.

"The old squad leader said hot and sour soup works."

Su Wantang felt a lump in her throat.

She buried her face in his chest.

"Fool."

Lu Jingyan held her close, resting his chin on the top of her head.

"Wantang, if you're really in pain, let's not keep the baby."

Su Wantang raised her head.

"What did you say"

"I'm serious." Lu Jingyan looked at her. "It breaks my heart to see you like this."

Su Wantang reached out and pinched his cheek.

"Lu Jingyan, are you stupid? The baby's five months along, and you just say you don't want it?"

"Then..."

“No, then.” Su Wantang interrupted him, “I can handle it.”

Lu Jingyan didn't say anything, but just hugged her tighter.

The two lay on the bed for a while.

Around 2 a.m., Su Wantang suddenly woke up.

She nudged Lu Jingyan.

"Jingyan".

"Hmm," he opened his eyes and immediately sat up. "What's wrong? Are you feeling unwell?"

"I want to eat the wood-fired wontons from Old Wang's family in the south of the city."

Lu Jingyan was stunned for a moment.

"Now"

"Mmm." Su Wantang nodded. "I really want to eat it."

Lu Jingyan threw off the covers, got out of bed, and began to get dressed.

"Come on, I'll carry you there."

"It's so late, they must be closed."

"It's okay, I'll go knock on the door."

He wrapped her in his coat and carried her on his back.

The jeep sped along the empty streets.

The streetlights cast a dim yellow light, making the car shadows appear very long.

Su Wantang lay on his back, listening to his even breathing.

"Jingyan, what do you think the baby will look like when it's born?"

"As long as you're healthy."

I mean appearance.

"I'll go with you," Lu Jingyan said. "I have to go with you."

Su Wantang smiled.

"What if it's a daughter, and she's as dark-skinned as you?"

"That looks good too."

"You're just being stubborn."

When the car reached the south of the city, the wonton stall was indeed closed.

Lu Jingyan knocked on the door.

"Old Wang, Old Wang!"

There was a noise inside, and the door opened a crack.

Old Wang peeked out, saw Lu Jingyan, and paused for a moment.

"Commander Lu, it's so late..."

"Make me a bowl of wontons," Lu Jingyan said. "My wife wants some."

Old Wang looked at Su Wantang on his back and smiled.

"Okay, please wait a moment."

He restarted the fire and boiled water.

Lu Jingyan placed Su Wantang on a small stool and squatted down beside her.

Is it cold?

"It's not cold." Su Wantang wrapped her coat tighter.

Old Wang was quick and efficient, and soon cooked a bowl of wontons.

"Here, eat it while it's hot."

Lu Jingyan took the bowl, scooped out a wonton, blew on it to cool it down, and brought it to her lips.

"Open your mouth."

Su Wantang took a bite.

Thin skin, generous filling, and delicious soup.

Her eyes lit up.

"tasty."

Lu Jingyan scooped up another one.

Old Wang stood to the side, watching this scene, and shook his head with a sigh.

"Brigade Commander Lu, it's rare to see you so doting on your wife."

Lu Jingyan didn't reply and continued feeding her.

Su Wantang ate more than half a bowl in one go.

My stomach finally feels less uncomfortable.

"That's enough, I can't eat anymore."

Lu Jingyan drank the rest of the soup.

After paying, I carried her back home.

On the way, Su Wantang leaned against his back with her eyes closed.

"Jingyan".

"Um"

"Thank you."

Lu Jingyan didn't say anything, but simply bounced her up a little to make her more stable on his back.

When they got home, he put her on the bed.

"Go to sleep."

Su Wantang grabbed his hand.

"Do you think if the child were a daughter, she might be as dark-skinned as you?"

Lu Jingyan lay down beside her.

"No, it will definitely look like you."

How can you be so sure?

"Because I'm the one who calls the shots."

Su Wantang smiled and closed her eyes.

Lu Jingyan held her close, his hand resting on her stomach.

A slight fetal movement came from inside.

He paused for a moment, then laughed.

This little guy is quite the troublemaker.

Su Wantang fell asleep quickly.

Lu Jingyan, however, kept his eyes open and looked out the window.

Moonlight streamed through the curtains, casting a silvery-white glow on the floor.

He recalled his disheveled state in the kitchen earlier that day, and a slight smile appeared on his lips.

Let Wang Ma do it next time.

His skills are really not good.

Just then, a shrill roar suddenly came from afar.

Lu Jingyan sat up abruptly.

The sound came from the direction of the Lu family's old house, heart-wrenching and particularly jarring in the dead of night.

Lu Jingyan jumped out of bed.

Su Wantang also woke up and placed her hand on his arm: "What happened?"

"Over at the old house," Lu Jingyan said, already getting dressed. "It's Jingyue."

No sooner had he finished speaking than hurried footsteps came from outside the door.

The guard, Xiao Liu, called out from outside the door: "Brigade Commander! Something's happened at the old house!"

Lu Jingyan opened the door, his face ashen: "Speak."

"Miss Lu...she's gone mad. She bit two caregivers, and now no one can get in," Xiao Liu said, his forehead covered in sweat.

Su Wantang had already gotten out of bed and put on her coat: "Let's go."

Lu Jingyan supported her: "You're like this now..."

"Stop talking nonsense," Su Wantang interrupted him. "She's your sister and my sister-in-law. If I don't go, who will?"

The three people rushed out of No. 1 Courtyard and ran towards the old house.

Under the moonlight, the windows of the old house shone with a dim, yellow light.

Inside the room, Lu Jingyue was curled up in the corner, her body convulsing.

Her fingernails scratched bloody marks on the wall, leaving her ten fingers a bloody mess.

Two caregivers stood outside the door, their arms covered in blood.

Grandpa Lu stood at the door, leaning on his cane, his hands trembling violently.

"Jingyan, you've come..." The old man's voice was hoarse, "Jingyue, she..."

Lu Jingyan looked at his younger sister in the room, his fists clenched so tightly they made a loud cracking sound.

Su Wantang walked to the door and glanced inside.

Lu Jingyue's eyes were bloodshot, and he let out a low growl like a wild beast.

She saw someone approaching and suddenly lunged at them.

"ah--"

One of the caregivers was unable to dodge in time and was tackled to the ground.

Lu Jingyue opened her mouth and bit, and blood immediately seeped from the caregiver's neck.

"Jingyue!" Lu Jingyan rushed in and pulled his sister away.

Lu Jingyue turned her head and bit his arm.

"Hiss—" Lu Jingyan groaned, but did not let go.

“Jingyue, it’s me, brother.” He lowered his voice. “Look closely, it’s me.”

Lu Jingyue's eyes were unfocused, filled only with madness.

She struggled, her fingernails leaving three bloody scratches on Lu Jingyan's face.

Old Master Lu's heart broke at the sight: "Jingyan, let her go! You'll get hurt!"

Lu Jingyan gritted his teeth and held his sister tightly: "I won't let go!"
