Chapter Twenty-Six
The sound of Qi Kai's phone shutter completely shattered the eerie atmosphere in the ward.
He Ru didn't hold this small matter against Qi Kai. She just gave Qi Kai a deep look before leaving. Qi Kai subconsciously shivered. He didn't care whether Qi Xiao still wanted to talk to him or not. He shouted outside, and his underlings immediately pushed the wheelchair in.
Qi Kai hoisted Qi Xiao up by the waist. Qi Xiao's leg was injured, and she couldn't struggle. "Put me down!"
"If you move again, I'll send you to see the old man!"
With just one sentence, Qi Xiao froze. She looked at Zhou Mo pitifully. Zhou Mo wanted to say something, but Yu Xi grabbed her wrist and quietly wrote a word in her palm.
No.
Zhou Mo hesitated for only a second before brushing away Yu Xi's hand and standing up. Qi Xiao seemed surprised that Zhou Mo would actually walk towards her. She changed her pitiful appearance from before and forced a smile. "Mo Mo, I'll come to play with you tomorrow. I've been out for a while today and need to get a shot."
Zhou Mo could tell that this was just an excuse. She was a little angry. These people were trying to fool her and see how she would react. If she really reacted, they would all hide back like turtles.
They're not little kids anymore, why do they still want to play this hide-and-seek game every day?
"Really? You got a shot and you're still running around. Don't you want your leg to get better? I'll watch you go back."
Qi Kai didn't react to this. After placing Qi Xiao in the wheelchair, he consciously took a half step back, making room for pushing the wheelchair. Zhou Mo didn't stand on ceremony and directly pushed it. His subordinates kept their eyes down and diligently led the way.
Qi Kai watched the two leave, but he didn't go. Instead, he pulled over the chair he had just used and sat down in front of Yu Xi's bed.
"I have no shortage of servants to wait on me."
Qi Kai sneered: "Yu Xi, you don't really think this matter is over, do you? Shawn hasn't shown up yet. He was the one who took that batch of goods, and in the end, we're the ones who suffer."
"If you want to retaliate, then retaliate. You don't need to drag me into it."
Qi Kai used his fingers to lift Yu Xi's blanket, revealing Yu Xi's body in a hospital gown. The well-fitting fabric showed the contours of her body underneath. "You've lost weight, Yu Xi."
“A stray dog recognizes its owner and then acts like it has a home.” Qi Kai bent down and pulled out a silver key from somewhere. The cold metal pressed against Yu Xi’s pale cheek, creating an indescribable eeriness.
Yu Xi maintained the same expression, but her eyes had turned much colder. "Don't touch that child."
"If you listen to me, I'll listen to you."
"How many times have you said this to Qi Xiao?" Yu Xi suddenly smiled, her already handsome face becoming even more alluring. "Does your sister still believe what you say now, little Pinocchio?"
Qi Kai gritted his teeth, his muscles tensing, like a leopard ready to pounce, ready to tear this foul-mouthed man in front of him apart at any moment.
Unfazed by the threat, Yu Xi continued her provocation, "Have people who can only survive by lying forgotten what it feels like to tell the truth?"
"Should I go and talk to your sister for you, tell her that when you gave her to Shawn, you..."
"Enough!" Qi Kai quickly stood up, turned around to compose himself, and tried to suppress his anger, trying to become the sinister and terrifying Qi Kai he used to be. However, his emotions surged and he finally couldn't help but kick the chair where the caregiver was sitting.
"Damn it! Yu Xi, do you really think I wouldn't dare to touch you?!"
"Who am I to you? You think you can just touch me whenever you want? Besides, I'm a weak patient right now, what can I do?" Yu Xi even spread his hands to show that he was really powerless. If Qi Kai hadn't seen the gloating expression on his face, he probably wouldn't have been so angry.
"Mad dog." Qi Kai gritted his teeth as he squeezed out those two words.
Just as Yu Xi was about to open his mouth to continue his sarcasm, the noise from the doorway made his expression change instantly. All his provocative and lively words fell silent. When he met Zhou Mo's probing gaze, he obediently smiled and said, "You're back."
"What happened?" Zhou Mo saw the overturned chair and Yu Xi's uncovered blanket. Without even looking at Qi Kai, she went over and covered Yu Xi with the blanket.
Yu Xi: "It was a little hot just now, so I flipped it over to air it out."
"Don't you know your physical condition right now? Your resistance is very weak. If you catch a cold, and it gets serious, it can turn into pneumonia."
"The pneumonia outbreak is going to last a long time, and my vacation is so short. Do you really not want to go to the beach with me?"
Yu Xi hadn't expected Zhou Mo to connect it to going to the sea. "No, it's just..."
"What do you mean?" Zhou Mo glanced at Qi Kai. "You're all a bunch of snakes and rats. Did you really pull back the covers yourself? Or was someone else just being nosy and you went along with it?"
After hearing this, Yu Xi and Qi Kai both looked very unhappy. One had been scolded but couldn't say anything back, and the other had been relegated to the opposing camp. In short, not a single word they wanted to hear was what they wanted to hear.
Men react to things they don't like to hear in two ways: either they slam the door and leave, or they remain silent.
Qi Kai is the former.
Yu Xi was the latter, forced into it.
"He's gone. Is there anything else you'd like to say?"
Yu Xi: "I wasn't full just now."
"Not full? You might as well starve to death." Zhou Mo picked up a chair in the room, turned around and left the ward.
Yu Xi waited for a while, he couldn't remember if it was a minute or a few minutes, until he was sure Zhou Mo was really gone. He couldn't help but show a gloomy expression of annoyance. His phone was on the bedside table, and he casually picked it up and dialed a number.
"Yes, number three, let that child leave for a while. He's crying? Don't worry about it, as long as he won't die."
After hanging up the phone, Yu Xi waited for a while, maybe five or ten minutes, but Zhou Mo still didn't return.
His flowing hair obscured the sinister glint in his eyes. He couldn't help but lick his front teeth, something he used to do when he was unhappy, but since meeting Zhou Mo, this gesture hadn't appeared in his daily routine for a long time.
Zhou Mo, for him.
It's really a fun toy.
But now that she's gone, Yu Xi isn't worried at all about whether Zhou Mo will come back. The answer is definitely yes, Zhou Mo will definitely come back.
She will come back this time.
What about next time?
Zhou Mo went to school.
Will they come back?
The world is so big, could there be a second Yu Xi or a second Qi Xiao appearing in Zhou Mo's life, and then she would continue her life in this city in another city?
Yu Xi never doubted that Zhou Mo possessed such charm.
His phone vibrated a few times in his palm. He looked down indifferently and saw a text message from He Ru, containing only four words: "Don't go too far."
Yu Xi did not reply and coldly turned off her phone screen.
He waited a while longer this time, fifteen minutes, which Yu Xi counted in his mind, down to the last second.
Yu Xi's face was expressionless, revealing neither joy nor sorrow. He simply waited quietly, his eyes unfocused as he stared at the white wall, lost in thought.
When Zhou Mo returned, this was the scene she saw: Yu Xi was still in the same position she had left in, sitting there blankly like an abandoned puppy, oblivious to any external reactions.
Zhou Mo walked up to him, but Yu Xi still didn't react.
It wasn't until Zhou Mo lifted the lid of the boxed lunch she bought and waved it under Yu Xi's nose that his unfocused eyes regained focus.
Braised pork belly.
Zhou Mo couldn't help but chuckle to herself. Just as she thought, he was a puppy, always wanting to eat meat. But liking meat was good; it helped him grow tall and strong.
She had previously asked the doctor about Yu Xi's condition, and the doctor had praised Yu Xi's robust physique, saying that if Yu Xi were thin and weak, her condition would likely be more serious.
When Zhou Mo heard this, she felt a little proud, after all, she was the head of Yu Xi's family and was honored to be associated with it.
"Didn't you say you were hungry?"
Weren't you angry?
"Do you see any parents who would let their children go hungry even if they were angry?" Zhou Mo said matter-of-factly, completely unaware that she had given herself a much higher seniority.
Yu Xi hesitated, but didn't say anything. He took the lunchbox, and Zhou Mo had already polished the rough-edged chopsticks and handed them to him. Yu Xi took the chopsticks and began to eat heartily.
It wasn't that the lunchbox was particularly delicious, but Yu Xi was genuinely hungry. Could He Ru's food be eaten? Yes, it was, but he understood the principle of "he who eats another's food is obligated to him," so Yu Xi didn't eat it. Oh, and neither did the other two.
"I have to go back to school this afternoon. My homeroom teacher needs to see me. When you get your injection, please keep an eye on it. If you're really sleepy, check how much medicine is left in the bottle. Set an alarm or ask the nurse to keep an eye on it. If you're hesitant to ask, I'll go and tell her. If anything happens, remember to call me. If I don't answer, I'll definitely see your text message."
Too verbose.
Yu Xi thought to himself, but this kind of nagging was a luxury he couldn't have when he was a child.
"knew."
Seeing how well-behaved Yu Xi was, Zhou Mo couldn't help but pat his head. "You're so well-behaved when I'm angry. Will you only be this well-behaved when I'm angry?"
Yu Xi muttered, "Let's talk about the future later."
"Oh, right." Zhou Mo saw that Yu Xi had finished eating and started packing up her lunchbox, "Uncle Zhang might be coming over tonight. Think about how you're going to talk to him about this."
"I understand." The tone was several degrees colder than when he had just said "I understand."
Zhou Mo wasn't oblivious to the situation, but she didn't care whether Yu Xi was cold to others, as long as he was warm to her.
Although the two people are just getting by together, it's not just about 'making do'.
Before leaving, Zhou Mo gave her final instructions and also spoke with the nurse who was taking care of Yu Xi's bed before leaving the hospital.
As soon as Zhou Mo arrived at the school gate, she was stopped by someone.
The one who stopped her was none other than the little boy she had seen in treatment room number three that day, Yu Ning.
"Sister, please help me, I don't want to go back."
"What's wrong?" Zhou Mo didn't respond with much enthusiasm, but out of politeness, she still acted very gently.
Yu Ning kept looking back, as if someone was chasing him.
"Sister, can you help me hide? Someone's trying to catch me."
Zhou Mo thought for a moment and nodded.
"Then come with me."
