The next day, not long after Song Ning left, people from the Song family arrived.
The visitor was Liu Hong from the Liu family. As soon as he entered, he sat down and refused to leave.
Song Dahai, with a sullen face, refused to let Liu Yuelan come out and dealt with the situation himself.
Liu Hong put his foot on the stool and said with a smirk, "Brother-in-law, where is my sister? Doesn't she know her family has come to visit?"
What are you doing here?
“My sister hasn’t been back to her parents’ home for so long, so naturally the family is worried that she might have been sold by your Song family, so of course we had to come and see her.”
"You are not welcome in our home."
"Brother-in-law, this is where you're wrong. My sister is still in your house, and you're thinking of disowning us? No way!"
"I heard from my mother that when my sister went back to her parents' home last time, my mother gave her one tael of silver. We're here to collect the debt!" Liu Hong shouted, his eyes wide.
"What do you mean, one tael of silver?" Song Dahai was dumbfounded.
"You're not trying to deny it, are you? My mother told me this herself! If she hadn't said it, we wouldn't have known you owed our family money!"
One tael of silver is no small sum. After the Liu family learned about this, they didn't waste a second and went straight to the Song family.
But Song Dahai had never seen one or two taels of silver before!
"Brother-in-law, if you don't pay back this tael of silver today, our whole family will have to rely on you to support us from now on." Liu Hong looked like a street thug, and judging from his posture, if he didn't come up with the money today, it would probably be a real mess.
Just as they were at an impasse, Liu Yuelan's voice rang out from outside the door: "Is that really what Mother said?"
Liu Yuelan had already heard the noise from next door. She wiped away her tears and couldn't hold back any longer, so she ran out.
Upon seeing Liu Yuelan finally appear, Liu Hong reverted to his old arrogant demeanor from when he was at home: "I've been here for so long, and you haven't even offered me a drop of water. You're really getting more and more capable!"
Liu Yuelan gritted her teeth and didn't move, her eyes red as she asked again, "Is that really what Mother said?"
Liu Hong lost his patience: "Are you going to pay me back or not? If you don't, I'm going to sue you."
"Did Mother send you?"
"Stop talking nonsense and pay up!"
Liu Yuelan wiped away her tears, stepped into the house, and a hint of determination appeared in her eyes: "Go back and tell the Liu family that they have no chance of getting anything from the Song family!"
"You!" Liu Hong bared his teeth, furious.
"You good-for-nothing! You've gotten married and now you don't recognize your family anymore? I'm going to sue you!"
"Then go ahead and sue! Even if you go to jail, you won't get a single penny!" Liu Yuelan said through gritted teeth.
In the past, Liu Yuelan's temperament was softer than cotton. At home, she dared not disobey her father and brothers, and after marriage, she dared not defy her mother-in-law. Everyone said that she was destined to suffer in this life.
But she still had her mother at home to protect her, who was her only remaining attachment to the Liu family.
But today, Liu Yuelan was completely heartbroken. Her brother from her maternal family came to her husband's house to cause trouble. He really had no shame when it came to money.
Liu Yuelan grabbed the door bolt standing by the door and smashed it at Liu Hong like a madwoman, hysterically shouting, "Get out! Get out!"
Liu Hong was shocked by Liu Yuelan's sudden outburst and dared not stay any longer: "You, you all wait, I won't let you get away with this!"
After making those threats, he quickly ran away.
Song Dahai stepped forward and asked worriedly, "Yue Niang, are you alright?"
Liu Yuelan threw down the stick, slumped onto the stool, and gave a bitter laugh: "I'm sorry, marrying me has brought you so much trouble."
"What are you talking about? If it weren't for you, I would have been a bachelor all along."
"But my family's affairs are probably not over yet..."
The Liu family won't give up until they squeeze every last bit of value out of her.
Because of this incident, the couple had been talking less since early morning. When Song Ning returned after delivering the goods, she noticed that something was wrong.
Seeing that Liu Yuelan didn't seem to be in good spirits, Song Ning asked Song Dahai, "Dad, did something happen this morning?"
Song Dahai sighed and then told Song Ning what had happened that morning.
If their family really had a tael or two of silver, why would they have to be so frugal with wild vegetables?
Song Ning was worried, so he went to ask Liu Yuelan. At first, Liu Yuelan didn't want to say anything, but now that they had been bullied so badly, Song Ning had to find out the truth.
Upon hearing this, Liu Yuelan started to cry, and Song Ning finally learned what had happened before.
The Liu family was so poor they couldn't make ends meet. They sold all the things their daughters could, and started thinking of other ways to survive.
The eldest sister of the Liu family was too far away to scheme against, so she turned her attention to Liu Yuelan.
When Liu Yuelan returned to her parents' home last year, her family was unusually hospitable. Liu Yuelan was initially happy to see her family suddenly treating her well, but later she found out that they had ulterior motives.
During that time, Liu Hong happened to meet a wealthy merchant in town, and somehow they struck up a conversation, which led to Liu Hong selling Liu Yuelan.
The wealthy merchant was very generous and immediately gave a deposit of one tael of silver, waiting for Liu Yuelan to arrive before having the two of them handle the matter.
By the time Liu Yuelan realized the Liu family's intentions, it was too late. If Song Dahai hadn't come looking for her since she wasn't going back, she would have really just killed herself.
Later, when the wealthy merchant saw that the deal hadn't gone through, he wanted his one tael of silver back, and the Liu family blamed Liu Yuelan for it.
Finally, it was Old Mrs. Liu who secretly gave the one or two taels of silver she had received to her daughter, and that settled the matter.
From then on, Liu Yuelan never went there again. The Liu family knew they were in the wrong, so they didn't bother Liu Yuelan anymore.
Unexpectedly, after so long, the Liu family came to ask for money again, which made Liu Yuelan feel heartbroken.
Song Ning left the house and roughly understood.
The fact that the Liu family members came to steal grain shows that they were truly struggling to make ends meet. When they discovered that the one or two taels of silver were missing, they shamelessly went to ask for the money back.
When the Liu family said they would report it to the authorities, Song Ning sneered, "Reporting it to the authorities is good, I was afraid they wouldn't."
After Song Ning returned home, the atmosphere at home improved a lot, and the family was so busy that they didn't have time to think about anything else.
In the afternoon, Aunt Zhao and Mrs. Sun came to work on time and heard that the matter of exchanging grain for water in the village had been resolved.
Dongyuan Village currently has a relatively sufficient water supply. It would be troublesome for Nanshan Village to fetch water from Dongyuan Village, so they decided to dig a ditch from Dongyuan Village to see if they could bring the water over.
Although Dongyuan Village is not far from Nanshan Village, digging a canal is not easy.
I heard that they're planning to have the men from both villages dig ditches, so that Nanshan Village might have water again in a few days.
As the group was chatting, a woman's voice came from outside: "Is your sister-in-law home?"
The three women exchanged a glance, and Aunt Zhao and Madam Sun quickly put away what they had made and then sat down to chat.
Hearing the sound, Song Ning went out of the courtyard and saw Zhang standing at the door.
