Chapter 43 We can't afford it.

Seeing Song Ning come out, Zhang asked with a smile, "Er Ya, where are your parents?"

My parents aren't home.

Zhang craned her neck to look into the house, but saw no one. Then her eyes darted around, and her eyes lit up when she saw the two chickens in their yard.

Zhang looked away and asked with a smile, "Are you alone at home?"

Song Ning nodded: "Yes."

"Nonsense, I saw Aunt Zhao and Jiang's wife enter your house." He said, and was about to go inside.

Song Ning stepped forward to block her way: "Second Aunt, is there something you need?"

Zhang sighed and said, "I just heard you were doing business and are now busy, so I came to help you out. I'm just being kind."

Song Ning smiled and said, "I wouldn't dare trouble you, Auntie. My family can handle this."

Zhang clicked her tongue and said, "You child, you're still young and don't understand. Those two are outsiders, we're different!"

As he spoke, he took Song Ning's hand and said, "We are all from the Song family. Even if we have separated, we are still one family. Naturally, we should prioritize our own family members in such matters. How can we let outsiders interfere?"

"Second Aunt, I can't make that decision either."

Zhang's eyes darted around, and then she whispered, "Why don't you tell your second aunt how to make that? Once she learns, you'll definitely get a good reward. The village chief's son will be back soon."

"What does it matter to me whether he comes back or not?"

"Oh dear, no wonder you haven't managed to win over the village chief's son after all this time. Why are you so stubborn? If you had some money, you could have given him gifts."

Their current story in the village is that everything they have now was discovered by Liu Yuelan by chance. Zhang thought she was young and easy to fool, so she deliberately came when Song Dahai and Liu Yuelan were not at home.

"Second Aunt, I don't understand these things. Besides, the food we make isn't anything special; we can barely sell it." Song Ning continued to play dumb.

Zhang rolled her eyes: "You're not telling the truth to your second aunt? Is it because your parents won't let you tell them? Your second uncle saw that thing in town last time. It was clean and white, and it looked like a good thing."

Zhang's little thoughts were written all over her face.

"Second Aunt, why don't you wait until my parents come back before you come? What would a child like me know?"

Zhang looked her up and down, feeling contempt for her.

When she shamelessly chased after Zhou Ling'an before, she never thought she was a child!

But she still had a smile on her face: "How about this, Er Ya, I can work too. I'll help you cook every day from now on. I won't ask for much money, just... just twenty coins a day, how about that?"

Song Ning's expression turned cold: "Second Aunt, even a day's wages for a farmhand in a wealthy family are less than twenty coins. You really dare to ask for that?"

Zhang didn't see anything wrong with it at all: "Aren't we family? As family, you wouldn't mistreat your second aunt, would you?"

“We have enough people in our family who make food. We can’t afford someone like you, Second Aunt. You should find another job.”

After saying that, Song Ning carried the two chickens back, then turned around, went inside, and closed the door.

Zhang gritted her teeth in anger. Although she didn't know what "finding another job" meant, she could tell from her tone that she was unwilling.

Zhang flicked her sleeves and said, "It's just making some shabby food, doesn't it? Do you really think you're superior?"

Aunt Zhao and Madam Sun peered through the window, opened a small gap, and whispered, "They're gone."

Both of them breathed a sigh of relief. When Zhang arrived, the first thing she said had really made them nervous.

After all, Zhang is a member of the Song family. No matter how bad the relationship is, they are still family. If Er Ya really agrees, wouldn't one of them have to be replaced?

Fortunately, Er Ya is also a child with her own opinions.

As soon as the person left, Song Ning put the chicken back in the yard and then went inside to continue working.

"This Zhang family has actually come knocking on our door," Sun exclaimed.

Sun was not the type to meddle. She didn't know much about the Song family's affairs, only that the eldest son's family and the old house had a very unpleasant falling out back then.

But Aunt Zhao knew perfectly well what was going on, and she snorted coldly: "Only Dahai and Xiu'e are good people in the Song family. The rest of them are no good at all!"

As soon as the words left her mouth, Aunt Zhao regretted them. After all, Er Ya's surname was Song, and no matter what, Granny Li was her own grandmother. Er Ya was sure to be unhappy with what she said.

He silently cursed himself for speaking too quickly.

Song Ning noticed Aunt Zhao's embarrassment and smiled, "I know you're standing up for us. We've long since seen through the people at the old house. If they don't cause trouble, I naturally won't go looking for trouble either. But if they go too far, I won't hold back."

Aunt Zhao laughed: "Yes, you have to be tough. Your parents were bullied so badly that even outsiders couldn't stand it. Luckily, you're here to stand up for them!"

“That Zhang woman was clearly here to inquire about the prescription. It seems we need to be more careful in the future,” Sun said seriously.

Their current house is really not a place where there is any privacy at all.

The kitchen wasn't big either; it was a bit cramped for three people to stand together. But there was no other way; she wasn't earning enough money to build a house, so she had to make do with what she had.

Aunt Zhao suggested, "Why don't you come to my house to make liangpi next time? My kitchen is big enough for five people, let alone three. Once the gate and the door are closed, you won't be able to see anything."

Song Ning was somewhat tempted: "But wouldn't that be too much trouble?"

“What’s the trouble? It’s just the two of us in my family, and we’re all counting on you to make a living. What’s the big deal about taking up a kitchen space?”

"If that's the case, then we'll go to Auntie's house tomorrow."

"Why!"

Today, Song Dahai brought Liu Yuelan to town. Song Ning was worried about Liu Yuelan's health, so she asked Song Dahai to take her there to check on her so she could feel more at ease.

The two didn't return until the sun was almost setting.

Song Ning quickly asked, "How is it? What did the doctor say?"

"It's nothing, I told you I wasn't going, but you insisted on spending that money." Liu Yuelan pursed her lips, feeling sorry for the money.

"It's good that you're alright. It's worth the money to have peace of mind."

“My daughter is right. I feel at ease now that I’m back.”

"Let's eat first."

Dinner was cooked by Song Ning: noodles and a few stir-fried dishes. Liu Yuelan's mood improved significantly.

The family had just gone to bed when there was a knocking sound at the door.

Song Ning quickly sat up in bed, and Song Dahai and Liu Yuelan next door also got up when they heard the noise.

"Brother and sister-in-law, it's me."

Upon hearing this, Song Ning quickly opened the door and saw her aunt Song Xiu'e and uncle Zhu Shun each holding a child, standing in front of the door in a disheveled state.
