Liang Guiying recalled the lemon tea, sugarcane juice and all kinds of tea drinks that were everywhere in the future. She remembered that when she was about to die, a cup of lemon tea could sell for more than ten yuan!
A cup costing over ten yuan is practically robbery.
Perhaps she could try using the sour yellow peel to make a yellow peel iced drink.
It's summer now, and street vendors pull out their popsicle boxes and sell popsicles along the streets for three to five cents a stick. Workers usually buy them when they see them after get off work.
There were also vendors selling herbal tea; a regular bowl cost five cents, while a bowl with twenty-four different toppings cost twelve cents.
Popsicles and herbal teas can quench thirst and cool you down in the summer. Her yellow-skinned iced drink has a similar effect, plus the added benefit of stimulating the appetite. Moreover, no one had ever made it like this before, so given that the price was similar, everyone would buy a cup to try it out.
Liang Guiying is a woman of action; she does what she says she will do.
"Aunt Zhong, Aunt Wang, I'll get you something fresh to drink."
"What's new?"
Aunt Zhong asked a question, and then saw Liang Guiying climb up the yellow bark tree.
She exclaimed, "Grandma Niannian, these wampee fruits are so sour! They're making our teeth ache! Why are you still bringing them for us to eat?"
"It's about eating wampee, but in a different way."
"Besides eating it raw or drying it and soaking it in water, is there a third way to eat this wampee?"
You'll find out soon enough!
Liang Guiying picked half a basin of yellow-skinned fruit and found a few unused needles: "Slice open the peel and squeeze out the pit. I only want the flesh."
The wampee fruit they grew themselves was small, with many seeds and little flesh, making it troublesome to process. It took Liang Guiying and two others more than ten minutes to process this half-basin of fruit, but they only got a little bit of fruit flesh. Liang Guiying felt it wasn't enough, so she went and picked another basin.
This took a full half hour to process.
Set the prepared fruit pulp aside, find an aluminum pot and slowly melt the rock sugar over low heat. When the syrup bubbles, add salt, then add water and bring to a boil. Pour it out and let it cool.
Seeing this, Aunt Zhong had a better idea: "Are you making yellow peel syrup?"
"More or less, but not quite the same... Niannian seems to be awake. Aunt Zhong, could you help me bring her downstairs and make her some milk?"
The little girl had just woken up, still a bit dazed, but she nestled quietly in Aunt Zhong's arms.
The two elders and the child all kept a close eye on Liang Guiying's work.
Liang Guiying used a wooden stick to pound the yellow flesh, then added rock sugar water that had been cooled to a warm temperature, covered it with gauze, and set it aside to rest.
"Aunt Zhong, I need some ice, the kind you can actually eat."
"I'll go get it, I'll go get it."
Aunt Zhong went and returned quickly, returning with a bowl full of ice in no time. Liang Guiying crushed the ice into small pieces for later use. Then she filtered the yellow tangy syrup through a mosquito net and finally added the crushed ice.
After stirring it, Liang Guiying served two bowls to Aunt Zhong and the others to try.
Aunt Zhong took a sip, seemed to want to say something, but didn't. She then took another sip, just like Aunt Wang.
The two finished their drinks in one go, and Aunt Zhong sighed, "Sweet and sour, icy and refreshing, so satisfying! Grandma Niannian, how did you come up with this way of drinking it? It's just a bit of a hassle."
"It's a bit of a hassle, but it's better than letting it hang on the tree to dry and rot," Liang Guiying said with a smile. "Would you like some every year?"
"Yes! I want to drink! Lots and lots of it!" The little girl made the shape of a large bowl with both hands.
"Children shouldn't drink too much cold stuff; they can only have a couple of sips."
Even so, Liang Guiying still gave the little girl half a bowl.
The little girl wanted to get down and drink by herself, so Liang Guiying patted her head and then filled another bowl for Aunt Zhong and Aunt Wang. The two of them drank to their hearts' content.
