Chapter 39 The Mysterious Master
Shen Yuexi looked nervously at the man in purple standing outside the car door with his eyes lowered.
A gust of wind blew by, blowing up his clothes.
Undoubtedly, he was a handsome man, no less handsome than Xiao Zhuo. However, beneath his handsome appearance, there seemed to be something inexplicable that made her vaguely smell a hint of danger.

As he spoke, his eyes fell on the bodies of the bandits at the back of the carriage. He was shocked and stammered, "You killed them?"
Shen Yuexi shook her head and said, "It's not me."
She helped Dr. Hua onto the oxcart, took out the ointment for treating bruises from the medicine box, applied it to the swollen area on Dr. Hua's forehead, and told him what had happened.
Doctor Hua asked, "Since this man saved us, why did he leave?"
He was still thinking when Shen Yuexi found the bandit's purse on his body and handed it to him, saying, "Doctor Hua, let's get out of here quickly. If any bandits come looking for their accomplices, it will be troublesome."
Doctor Hua nodded quickly upon hearing this and said, "That makes perfect sense. You get in the car and I'll drive. When we get to the county seat, we'll report to the authorities immediately."
Fearing that more bandits might come, the two men did not dare to stay any longer and hurried to the county town.
Shen Yuexi's heart finally settled down once they entered the county gate. Doctor Hua drove to the county government office and reported to the magistrate the incident of being attacked by bandits on the road.
Doctor Hua was quite famous in Tongliao County, so the county magistrate did not dare to neglect him and arranged for the yamen runners to go to the scene of the incident to search for the bandits and deal with the aftermath.
After the two left the county government office, Shen Yuexi accompanied Doctor Hua back to Yishengtang to have his forehead treated. They then headed to the meeting place they had agreed to meet with Doctor Lin.
When they arrived at the inn, they mentioned Doctor Lin. The waiter led them upstairs, to the door of a room, and then went downstairs.
Doctor Hua went forward and knocked on the door, calling out, "Doctor Lin, I have summoned Madam Pei."
The door opened, and a middle-aged man in a blue robe emerged. His face was like an ancient jade, and with three wisps of black beard, he truly possessed the demeanor of a physician. However, compared to Doctor Hua, this man possessed a more aristocratic air, more like a doctor specializing in the care of the rich and powerful.
"Please come in." The middle-aged man smiled and welcomed the two into the house.
After the host and guest took their seats, the middle-aged man clasped his hands and bowed to Shen Yuexi, saying, "I believe this is Madam Pei. My surname is Lin Kui."
Shen Yuexi returned the greeting and said, "Doctor Lin, do you want to buy my prescription?"
"Of course, I have to wait for my master in the county town, so I dare not leave without permission." Lin Kui looked at Doctor Hua with a smile, "Otherwise, I should have gone to Daliang Village in person to invite him."
As he spoke, his eyes fell on Doctor Hua's forehead, his expression changed slightly, and he asked:

As he said that, Lin Kui stood up and started to call the waiter.
Shen Yuexi quickly stopped him and said, "Doctor Lin, you don't have to be polite. I came here to sell you a prescription. Just give me some money and I'll go back."
Firstly, she and Xiao Zhuo needed to leave Daliang Village as soon as possible and didn't want to linger here any longer. Secondly, she was afraid that if they delayed any longer and it got dark, they might run into bandits on the road.
Lin Kui did not insist. He picked up the teapot on the table, poured tea for the two of them, and said, "Since that's the case, please come down with me, Madam Pei. I will take Madam Pei to see someone."
Shen Yuexi asked: "Why do you still want to meet people?"
She thought that Doctor Lin would just give her the money, and she was ready to hand over the prescription to him. But she didn't expect this to happen.
Lin Kui smiled and said, "Madam Pei, you don't know that although I have decided to buy your prescription, the money is not with me."
As the two talked, Doctor Hua sat there swaying, his hands covering his head, as if he was feeling unwell. Lin Kui said to Doctor Hua, "Doctor Hua has a forehead injury. You can return home and rest. I will take Madam Pei to see the person myself."
After Doctor Hua left, Lin Kui took Shen Yuexi out of the inn, walked through two streets, and arrived at a quiet courtyard.
The servant at the door saw the two of them coming and opened the door without saying a word. After the two of them entered, Shen Yuexi saw that the courtyard was small but very exquisite. She couldn't help but lift the curtain to take a closer look.
Compared to the artificial rockery in the previous life, this place is really ancient and charming.
Arriving outside a study, Lin Kui asked Shen Yuexi to wait for a moment and said to the servant outside, "Has the master arrived?"
The servant said, "I just arrived. I was delayed by some minor matters on the way."
"Just say Lin Kui wants to see you."
"Wait a moment, I will report back." The servant said and turned to go into the house.
Since she had nothing to do anyway, Shen Yuexi looked around.
Whether it was the servants or maids passing by, they were all reserved and polite, not at all like the residence of a vulgar person. Although this small courtyard was not large, it revealed the traces of a high-ranking family everywhere.
In the original owner's memory, the Duke's Mansion was only this grand and magnificent. This meant that the owner of this place was at least a high-ranking official.
For a high-ranking official, five hundred taels is nothing.
She was just pondering this when the bead curtain rustled and a servant came out and said to Lin Kui, "Sir, the master wants you to come in."
Lin Kui said to Shen Yuexi, "Madam Pei, please follow me."
Chen Yuexi followed Lin Kui into the house, which was neat and tidy, with landscape paintings hanging on the walls. A censer of refreshing incense burned on the central table. The entire room was filled with a light, soothing aroma.
Lin Kui whispered, "Madam Pei, please wait here. I will go and discuss this with the master first."
Shen Yuexi had been born in the Duke's Mansion since she was a child. She knew that the rules of a wealthy family were numerous, and she had long since adapted to them. She found a chair and sat down to wait. Not long after, Lin Kui came out from the inner room and lifted the beaded curtain for her:
"Madam Pei, the master wants you to come in."
It sounded like this master didn't treat her any differently. But she was only here to sell prescriptions for money, not to be a guest. It didn't matter.
Shen Yuexi entered the house.
A man was standing by the window, one hand behind his back, the other playing with a budgie on a shelf. Hearing her footsteps, he turned around.
Seeing the man's appearance, Shen Yuexi was startled and couldn't help but blurt out:
"It's you."
