Chapter 50: In a Hurry

On the second day, the third day, and all the way to the fifth day, Wen Xi practiced the simplest needlework.

Ye Erniang finally realized that Wen Xi was not being modest and her acupuncture skills were indeed average.

Not brilliant, but not dumb either. Fortunately, I'm patient. I also know that when I don't know how to do something, I should learn the ropes instead of just following the old ways.

On the sixth day, Mao came to the county to buy something. She passed by the embroidery shop to visit her daughter and consigned the handkerchiefs she had embroidered with Xiangye over the winter.

After Mao saw the handkerchief that Ye Erniang had placed on the counter, she felt a little embarrassed to take it out.

Ye Erniang smiled and said:

"Don't be sad, sister. When you are free, you can come to my place and we can exchange embroidery skills."

Mao was flattered:

"Really,"

Ye Erniang smiled and nodded.

Wen Xi also asked Ye Erniang for a day off to come back and take a look.

And then, along the way, I endured the excitement from my mother. Is it really necessary to be so excited about a communication skill?

Wen Xi must not divert her attention:

"Mom, how is the construction of our house going?"

Mao finally calmed down and gave Wen Xi a cold look.

"I think you really should tell Gu Zaitong to do it. Instead of building a good house, you have to do this and that. It makes that Yuanzi chef scratch his head and ears every day, like a monkey. It makes me feel a little embarrassed."

"Ahem... why am I the one who's causing all this trouble? That's good advice. Uncle Yuanzi will be happy."

"Okay, okay, I can't argue with you. By the way, there's one of the blueprints you asked me to bring back for your brother Qiangzi a few days ago that he doesn't understand. He asked me to ask you when you come back. I'm not saying you're making such a fuss..."

Wen Xi quickly took out some winter melon candy from her purse and stuffed a piece into Mao's pocket:

"Got it, mom. I'll go there when I get back, hehe."

Mao, unable to speak with the candy in her mouth, glared at Wen Xi. Wen Xi, with a playful smile, simply took her arm and pretended not to notice.

After entering the village, Wen Xi took a detour to look at the other houses under construction. Most were made of a combination of brick and earth. It seemed his own house wouldn't stand out much.

When I got home, I saw that the progress of the house was pretty good, basically one third completed.

Yuanzi saw Wenxi coming over and pulled her over for a long discussion. They discussed how high the chimney should be, how wide the flue should be, and so on. They kept discussing until dinner time.

When Gu Shengmo saw Wen Xi coming back, he immediately clung to her. This was the longest time he had ever been away from his sister since he was a child! He had no idea that he missed his sister so much when she was away.

Seeing his pitiful brother like this, Wen Xi felt so distressed that he picked up the heavy little guy and rocked him for a long time. This made the little man feel very embarrassed.

After eating the big pot meal, Wen Xi brought her little tail to Fang Qiang's house. From a distance, Fang Ya's big brother ran out and hugged Wen Xi exaggeratedly: "You're finally back! I missed you so much."

Seeing his elder sister being hugged, Gu Shengmo felt a little jealous and pulled Wen Xi towards him.

Fang Ya saw it and pouted:

"You little man, you're trying to steal my sister from me."

Gu Shengmo didn't know what to do, so he reluctantly said:

"Well, I'll let you for a while!"

Fang Qiang stood aside and grinned foolishly.

Wen Xi forgot to order furniture when she left, so she sent Fang Qiang a few drawings a few days ago.

Wardrobe, kang cabinet and washstand.

The kang cabinet is simple, just three side-door cabinets. It's placed on the edge of the kang. Slightly higher than the kang table, it's used to store quilts during the day, avoiding dust and unsightly appearance. It can also serve as a bedside table.

The washstand isn't too difficult, like the ones from the 1970s and 1980s. It's lightweight and uses minimal materials. The problem is, you either have to bend over and put your head on the ground to wash your face, or just place it on the bed, splashing water everywhere. It's so inconvenient.

The most difficult thing would probably be the wardrobe! Actually, it's the most common wardrobe in modern times. But in ancient times, people used wooden cabinets or boxes to store things. So they probably wouldn't understand.

Sure enough, Fang Qiang took out the blueprint of the wardrobe and asked puzzledly:

"Sister Wenxi, I don't understand this."

"Actually, this is simple. It's the same as a wooden cabinet. The lid is on the top, but this is on the side, but with two doors. You put a partition on the top and bottom, just like... yes, like those big cabinets in restaurant kitchens."

Fang Qiang scratched his head and said in confusion:

"Why not just make partitions? Why stick a stick in the middle of such a big space? It's so thin, what can you put on it? Isn't it a waste of space?"

Wen Xi was amused and covered her mouth and said:

"Brother Qiangzi, you're so funny. Who puts things on a wooden stick? It's for hanging clothes. Unlike boxes and baskets, clothes always get wrinkled. Oh, by the way, I have a business opportunity for you."

As he said this, he squatted on the ground, picked up a stone and drew a pattern of a clothes hanger on the ground.

"This is called a clothes hanger. Put your clothes on it and then hang them on the stick."

"It's hard to make such a curved piece of wood. It needs to be carved!"

"You don't need wood, bamboo will do. Just warm it over a fire and you can bend it. And there's no need for any special skills to make it. Bamboos are readily available in bamboo forests. Just put in some effort. Maybe by the time my wardrobe is finished, others will like it, too. Then wouldn't your wardrobe business become a big one?"

Fang Qiang said solemnly:

"If that happens... I will definitely not take advantage of you. After all, this is your blueprint."

Wen Xi smiled and waved her hands:

"It's not a big deal, just sell it. After all, it's not difficult to make, any carpenter can make it with some research."
