Chapter 16 Buying Tools and a Handcart

Ruan Meng strode ahead with her head held high, while Ruan Yi hesitated, "A handcart?"

He was worried that the money was being spent too quickly and that the carts were not being used efficiently.

Thinking back to the time when the Imperial Censor's Mansion was in power, when did my second brother ever have so many concerns about a cart?

Ruan Meng felt a pang of sympathy, so she patiently explained:

"Second brother, it seems the village chief's family isn't doing too well either."

“In the future, we will be going to the city a lot more often. Relying solely on people carrying baskets on their backs is labor-intensive and we can't carry much stuff at a time.”

"We always borrow from the village chief's family, but it's inconvenient for them to use it when they need it."

"Anything we buy that's profitable, that can bring in many times the return, and is within our budget, is worth considering. And also..."

"Actually, you see, my brother and sister-in-law are very happy to come to the city. But my brother is worried that they'll cause us trouble, and he's concerned that we'll get tired riding in the wheelbarrow..."

"Without the cart, it would be really difficult for my brother to walk on foot. I doubt he would come out of town with us."

At first, Ruan Yi listened attentively, but upon hearing the last sentence, he immediately agreed, "Okay! Buy it!"

Ruan Meng smiled and discussed with him, "Let's buy a bigger one, a two-wheeled one, so it can hold more bamboo baskets and be more convenient to transport things into the city to sell."

"Big brother can still lie down!"

Ruan Yi added.

"right!"

Ruan Meng agreed, "If we make money in the future, we can sell mules or oxen to pull carts!"

When Ruan Yi heard his sister's "big promise," he couldn't help but feel longing.

After asking passersby for directions, the two went to a cart shop and bought a two-wheeled cart that was wide enough for two people. They then put the hoes, shovels, bamboo baskets, winnowing baskets, and other items they had purchased onto the cart.

"Little sister, sit on top!"

Ruan Yi exclaimed excitedly, "Brother, push you!"

Without hesitation, Ruan Meng happily jumped up, went to the steamed bun shop to get the buns, carried them back, and hurried to find her eldest brother and sister-in-law to meet up with her third brother.

"Wow! Little sister, where did this cart come from?"

Ruan Zheng stopped the wheelbarrow and circled around the cart.

Ruan Meng got off the cart, opened her bundle, and hurriedly offered her eldest brother and sister-in-law, as well as her third brother, some hot steamed buns.

Ruan Meng then gave two more to her second brother.

Seeing that there was still plenty left in the bundle, the elder brother and sister-in-law didn't stand on ceremony, as they were truly hungry.

The second child initially thought it was too scary for his sister to buy fifty!

But before they knew it, everyone had eaten their fill and realized there were only a dozen or so left.

Ruan Meng explained to her eldest brother and sister-in-law, and her third brother, "This is our cart!"

Ruan Meng explained to the three the money from selling the Ganoderma lucidum and how she exchanged snake gall for herbs.

The eldest sister-in-law was clearly surprised as well, and patted Ruan Meng on the head, "You're really capable!"

Ruan Meng explained her consideration of buying a cart to her elder brother and sister-in-law, but of course, she omitted the consideration of her elder brother's travel.

"I'm so sorry, brother and sister-in-law! There wasn't enough time. Be careful, it's getting late and the car dealership will be closed. It won't be convenient for you to come out next time, so I'll just go ahead and tell you later!"

Ruan Meng looked at her second brother, Ruan Yi, who then handed the remaining few taels of silver and copper coins to his sister-in-law.

The eldest sister-in-law didn't hesitate and carefully put the money away, saying to Ruan Meng, "Mengmeng, you're the one who earned all this money! If it weren't for you, we wouldn't even have enough to eat right now!"

"If you want to buy anything in the future, just go ahead and buy it, as long as you're thoughtful. Although my sister-in-law helps with the money, she's just keeping it with me; she's not going to control everything you do!"

Ruan Meng leaned against her sister-in-law, realizing once again how wonderful her sister-in-law was.

While waiting for the Song and Fan families, the eldest brother, Ruan Qian, spoke up, "The wild boar was caught in front of Granny Liu's door. Logically, we should give Granny Liu a share."

"Do you think it's better for us to give them money directly, or to help them bring back some supplies?"

Ruan Meng discovered that besides being an older brother, her older brother was also a very good teacher.

He was less autocratic than the people of his time, and instead guided them patiently, consulting with his wife, brothers and sisters on everything.

The purpose of asking this question is actually to stimulate the younger siblings to think.

Ruan Meng understood that with the original owner's parents gone and her older brother in poor health, she was worried about the worst possible outcome...

I hope my younger siblings can all think independently and grow up.

"I'll give you the money, and I'll buy you the goods!"

Ruan Zheng said frankly.

Ruan Qian looked at his wife, his second brother, and his third sister. Seeing that they had no objections, he showed a relieved expression.

Ruan Qian looked at his third brother, Ruan Zheng, and said, "Third brother, take some money from your sister-in-law and go and buy some supplies that you think Granny Liu needs."

"Second brother, think about it, how much money would be appropriate for us to give Granny Liu?"

Ruan Zheng had always followed his elder brother and sister-in-law, selling wild boar meat and purchasing supplies. Now, he was leaving alone in an unfamiliar environment and was a little apprehensive.

But he listened to his elder brother, took two taels of silver from his sister-in-law, and strode away.

While the second brother, Ruan Qian, was deep in thought, Ruan Meng glanced at her third brother's back and said to her eldest brother, "Big brother, I'll follow far behind."

The eldest brother smiled and nodded. Before leaving, Ruan Meng instructed the second brother, "Second brother, protect eldest brother and sister-in-law!"
