Shi Chan waited for a while but received no reply from Liuli. Instead, the shouts and screams from the city reached him clearly, causing him immense grief and quickly fading the joy from his face. He looked down at the carnage in the city and said anxiously, "No matter what, I thank you for your concern, young lady, but I cannot stand idly by and watch innocent people suffer this calamity. I'm sorry, young lady."
Having said that, he was about to descend into the city.
"Master Shichan!" Liuli was so shocked that she didn't even think about why she insisted on stopping him, and subconsciously shouted.
Shi Chan hesitated and stopped, asking in confusion, "Miss?"
Liuli frowned and pondered for a moment, then said in a cold voice, "Going down alone is just suicide. I'm afraid you won't even be able to save half the people. Why don't you..."
Liuli couldn't control the urge to stop Shichan from going to his death. Despite her inner struggle and self-reproach, she still frowned and said, "Why don't you go to those righteous sects and pass the message on to them..."
As she spoke, Liuli's brows furrowed even more, her expression one of extreme distress.
However, Shi Chan's mood couldn't help but brighten little by little. Even though the scene in Xiong City below was as miserable as hell, and even though the screams reached his ears, joy still spread in his heart and warmed his eyes.
Liuli cares about him. The words she says and the actions she takes are things that only the Liuli before her rebirth would say or do. Has she really remembered those beautiful feelings from the past?
Shi Chan was overjoyed and said with a smile, "Thank you, young lady, thank you so much."
Liuli secretly breathed a sigh of relief. Her face turned cold, and she said in a chilling voice, "Since you've figured it out, then get lost!"
Shi Chan shook his head and said gently, "Please forgive me, young lady. If I leave, I will truly be unable to save even one common person. You need not worry about my life or death, please let me go."
"What a blockheaded, stupid monk!" Liuli was furious.
The sounds of agony echoed from the city below. Shi Chan looked down and saw that the demons were so engrossed in their killing that they no longer cared about divine punishment or whether the people wanted to leave. They had closed the four gates and were searching for innocent civilians in the city to kill them cruelly.
Looking down from above, one could see that every street and alley in the city was filled with panicked people fleeing in terror, followed by a group of demons with sinister smiles on their faces.
Shi Chan's brow twitched, and the smile on his face vanished instantly, replaced by a look of rage. His hands clenched into fists, and he said in a trembling voice, "This is too much, too much... They actually... They even prey on children!"
After saying that, he impulsively flew straight down.
Liuli's face was cold and stern, her hands clenched into fists, knuckles white. She frowned, telling herself that she had done her best, that the monk was foolish to go and die, so let him go, let him go... let him go!
But he really did turn into a golden light and disappear before her eyes. Liuli couldn't help but think of the tragic scene of him being surrounded and killed by many demons, and her heart clenched with sorrow.
Liuli hovered in mid-air, her clenched fist trembling slightly. Her face showed struggle as she tried to suppress the urge to stop him from going to his death. However, even though her teeth ached from clenching them, she still couldn't suppress the thought.
Liuli raised her little face, her eyes tightly closed, and suddenly a scene appeared in the darkness before her. It was a secluded mountain filled with the fragrance of incense. On a path among numerous meditation rooms, a gray-robed monk led a little monk, no more than three or four years old, slowly towards them. The little monk's chubby face was full of confusion; he was muttering to himself:
"It's not one of the Seven Treasures, and glass isn't a gemstone. It is...it is..."
Liuli suddenly opened her eyes, turned around, and rushed down the city wall.
He couldn't die, and she couldn't just watch him go to his death; he... was her nightingale.
